25.01.2022 My name is Shea Rotumah and I am proud Gunditjmara man. Workplace/role: Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation. My job is helping our mob to look after Gunditjmara forests and all of the plants and animals that live there. Aboriginal people have a responsibility to look after Country, it’s a part of us and we are a part of it, so looking after it, is like looking after ourselves. What does culture mean to you? I am very proud of my Culture and it makes me w...ho I am. Things like hunting and fishing for my family and elders, practicing and passing on Cultural knowledge to my children and children of the community through dancing, singing and making tools and weapons, spending time out on country to look after our sacred places and find new ones is a deadly way to keep connected to our country and each other. All of these things are very important to our mob and help keep us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually fit. What are some strategies you use to maintain a healthy headspace? I think like this: Physical Go for a hike on Country Mental I seek help from someone to speak about it, or if I need to think, I go to a special place to have some quiet and reflect. Emotional I think about what emotion I’m having trouble with and an activity to help. If I’m sad I do something that brings me joy, like spending time with kids, they always end up making me laugh. If I’m nervous or anxious, I do something that takes my mind off things, like make some clapsticks or a spear. Getting it out onto paper or canvas through art in some way can help deal with it. Spiritual Singing, dancing, looking after country can all help with this.

06.01.2022 The lucky last of our community profiles. We hope you’ve enjoyed them. Name: Ben Church Workplace/role:... I’m a Team Leader with the Winda Mara, Budj Bim Rangers. We work across our IPA’s (Indigenous Protected Area’s) to protect the natural and cultural values of the Budj Bim Landscape. Our land management activities include revegetation, weed and pest mapping, and protecting cultural heritage sites. What do you love about your role in the community? I believe having connection to country is vitally important to our mental health and well-being, so being able to provide community access to the IPA’s (Indigenous Protected Area’s) and other parts of Gunditjmara Country gives me great satisfaction. What does culture mean to you? Culture to me is about connection and belonging. As Gunditjmara, we have a unique view of the world that’s distinct from mainstream and other Indigenous groups. Our mobs are connected to the land through a kinship system, and this connection to land comes with specific roles and responsibilities. Culture is also about passing knowledge on and helping build on our identities as Gunditjmara- particularly to our young ones. What are some strategies you use to help with a heathy headspace? Being out in the bush and on country helps me in my headspace. I have a passion for native plants, particularly those Indigenous to Gunditjmara Country, so I am always trying to build my capacity in that regard. This helps me connect to country. Another passion of mine is woodwork, particularly the making of Aboriginal tools and weapons. This is another way I connect and build on my own identity as Gunditjmara, which in turn helps provide me with a healthy headspace.
