21.01.2022 Amputee Awareness Week 2020 may be over for another year, but our commitment to helping and raising awareness on this important cause is on-going. Did you know that each year in Australia, there are over 4,400 diabetes-related amputations? With early detection and treatment, up to 85% could be prevented. Imagine the lives that would be changed if we could prevent more amputations.... This is why we are so passionate about this issue. Kevin knows first-hand how scary it can be to face the possibility of losing his leg. Kevin lives with type 2 diabetes and while on a beach side holiday had a small abrasion turn into a life-threatening foot ulcer. Without immediate medical attention, Kevin would have lost more than a toe that day. Now Kevin has some important advice for people with diabetes. First thing, is to stay on top of your diabetes management and that includes looking after your feet. See a podiatrist regularly and if problems are escalating make sure you get a second opinion. There are treatments and therapies out there that might be able to help you, even if the situation is looking grim. 21.01.2022 People with type 2 diabetes are at a greater risk of developing diabetes-related heart conditions. We surveyed Australians with type 2 diabetes to find out what they knew about the relationship between diabetes and heart disease. The bad news is that 59% of people did not know that heart disease is the number one cause of death for people with type 2 diabetes.... The good news is that if you're reading this post, knowing your heart is at risk is the first step to reducing your risk. If you’ve got type 2 diabetes, make an appointment today with you GP and talk about what you can do to lower your risk of heart disease. https://takediabetes2heart.com.au//Take-care-of-your-heart
20.01.2022 Melbourne researchers have discovered a new treatment that could help reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people with diabetes. The team from Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute have shown that by targeting chronic inflammation of blood vessels they can stop heart disease in its tracks. Lead researcher Professor Judy de Haan said the new therapy could reduce the risk of heart disease by up to 40 per cent. ... 15.01.2022 Researchers from the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus have found that immune responses to insulin could help identify individuals most at risk for developing type 1 diabetes. We want to know why people develop type 1 diabetes, and this research has helped provide a lot more information and data as to what it looks like when genetically at-risk individuals are headed towards clinical diagnosis, says Aaron Michels, MD, t...he study’s lead researcher, Associate Professor of Medicine at CU Anschutz and researcher at the Barbara Davis Center. 15.01.2022 What are you asking Santa for this year? A lovely pair of diabetes socks? What about some sugar-free, diabetes cookies? Probably not. People living with diabetes spend so much time thinking about diabetes, let's not make Christmas all about it too!... So, if you are looking for a gift for someone living with diabetes, remember they are so much more than diabetes. Focus on their hobbies, or what brings them joy (unless that's either of the things listed above, then get them those!). Remember, you are buying for the person, not their condition. We’ve shared this before but Twice Diabetes sums it up nicely: http://twicediabetes.com/diabetes-christmas-gift-guide-jus/

14.01.2022 At Diabetes Australia we represent Australians with all types of diabetes, including the rarer types. MODY is a rare type of diabetes caused by a mutation (or change) in a single gene. It is passed from parent to child.... If a parent has this gene mutation, their child has a 50% chance of inheriting it from them. If a child does inherit the mutation they will generally go on to develop MODY before they’re 25, regardless of their lifestyle, ethnic background or weight. If you’re interested to learn more, you can read about it here: https://jdrf.org.au/type-1-diabetes-glossary/mody/ Do you have experience with this rare form of diabetes? If you are comfortable sharing, we would love you to share your stories below and help us raise awareness around all forms of diabetes.
13.01.2022 If you could write a letter to yourself when you were first diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, what would you say? We asked Cindy. This is her letter. ‘Dear Cindy, ... 13.01.2022 Being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes can be overwhelming. There is a lot to learn. Some people can be unsure of where to turn. Sometimes the best information and support can come from the experiences of other people. That’s why we’ve launched 'If I Had Known' a campaign which gives a voice to real Australians impacted by type 2 diabetes to share their experiences about what they wished they’d known when they were first diagnosed... This week we will be talking to Clinical Psychologist and Deputy Director of The Australian Centre of Behavioural Research in Diabetes, Dr Christel Hendriecks. Dr Hendrieckx and Renza will be discussing many of the challenges people living with type 2 diabetes face that may prevent them from seeking the support they need. Do you have a question for the experts? Comment below or send us a private message and we'll make sure it gets discussed. See you all tomorrow!
12.01.2022 There are 1.7 million Australians living with all types of diabetes and every person is unique. That means everyone manages their diabetes in slightly different ways. One part of living with diabetes everyone has to think about is what they eat. We believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to food and diabetes and that’s why people should talk to a qualified health professional to develop an approach that suits them. For many people in Australia’s diabetes community that... means adopting a low carb approach. We acknowledge that a low carb approach can be great for some people and we support people who choose to do this. That’s why we developed a position statement to help people make an informed decision about what is best for them. The Australian Dietary Guidelines are a good starting point for all Australians, but we always recommend that people with diabetes talk to their diabetes healthcare team and get **individualised advice** The Guidelines are now seven years old and there has been plenty of new research since then. We are pleased the NHMRC has announced a review of the Guidelines, taking into account the best available evidence from leading experts Diabetes Australia will be contributing to ensure we get the best possible dietary guidelines for people with diabetes. https://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au//Diabetes-Australia-P
11.01.2022 Should people with separate variants of type 2 diabetes be treated with different types of medications? Researchers at Lund University in Sweden and Skåne University Hospital will attempt to answer that question in a new study. Recent research has indicated that treatment could be improved by becoming more specific to the person with diabetes. A study published in 2018 showed that those with type 2 diabetes are not one homogenous group, but rather several subgroups.... The variation is so great that it is possible to distinguish several subgroups of type 2 diabetes. One of these groups is characterized by low insulin production. Another is characterized by low sensitivity to the insulin that is produced, says Anders Rosengren. 200 people with type 2 diabetes will be recruited for a randomized trial with two approved diabetes medications. This is a serious knowledge gap that makes it difficult for medical professionals to improve diabetes treatment, says Anders Rosengren. Research in this space is important, and we look forward to following this study and their future findings. Type 2 diabetes is one of the fastest growing conditions across the world - in fact, it's estimated over 300 million people worldwide have type 2 diabetes. https://www.miragenews.com/new-study-on-personalized-type-/

09.01.2022 This one caught our attention this week. Scientists at the University of Alberta believe they have developed a technique to turn a person with diabetes' own blood into insulin-producing islet cells. "So now we're at the point where we can reliably manufacture insulin-producing cells from patients' blood who have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes and we have been doing this now for the last several months in the lab," lead researcher James Shapiro said. ... 01.01.2022 Did you know it’s Foot Health Week here in Australia? Maintaining healthy feet is especially important for people living with diabetes since foot ulcers are one of the most common diabetes-related complications. Do you know the signs and symptoms of a foot ulcer? Foot ulcers are open sores or lesions that will not heal or that return over a long period of time. ... These sores result from the breakdown of the skin and tissues of the feet and ankles and can get infected. Symptoms of foot ulcers can include swelling, burning, and pain. It's important people with diabetes check their feet regularly and pay close attention to any of the above symptoms. If you find a wound on your feet or believe you may be developing a foot ulcer, visit your GP or podiatrist as soon as you can. We also have some fantastic guests as part of our foot health Q&A on Thursday. Make sure you share your questions and comments below and we’ll make sure they get discussed.
01.01.2022 Are you living with type 2 diabetes and love exercise, but not the time it consumes? Here’s some interesting news! Frequent, short exercise sessions may be better for the blood vessels of people with diabetes than longer and fewer workouts, and that may reduce their risk of heart disease, according to a new study. ... People with type 2 diabetes are at increased risk for heart disease and reduced vascular (blood vessel) function, the study authors noted. Because blood vessel function deteriorates as type 2 diabetes progresses, it's possible that more frequent interruptions to sitting are needed to preserve blood flow to the legs, the study's author noted. While the results may indicate positive results with short, intense workouts - we stand by the notion that the best exercise is the exercise you enjoy doing and can do consistently. https://consumer.healthday.com/b-11-26-quick-bursts-of-exer
