21.01.2022 This week, were celebrating all the dads and dad-figures whose unconditional love and care have made a positive impact in our lives and encouraged us in our journey with diabetes. Take a walk down memory lane with our Consumer Advisor and Families Coordinator, Kim, who is living with type 1 diabetes, as she shares this very special photograph. This picture was taken when Kims parents dropped her off at her first ever Royal Childrens Hospital Diabetes Camp for Children i...n Anglesea! Kims father, Heinz, shared that As a father it was really challenging to see my little girl get diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. If it were possible, I would rather be diagnosed myself and let Kim have her childhood uninterrupted. Our dads and dad-figures really are super heroes. By making a donation in lieu of a Fathers Day gift, your gift will continue to support people living with or affected by diabetes, today, tomorrow and beyond. 20.01.2022 Over time, having blood sugar levels that are consistently above the normal range can put us at risk of serious complications, including vision loss, kidney disease, foot and leg problems, as well as stroke and heart disease. World Heart Day (29 September) is just around the corner, so we want to raise awareness and remind everyone about how important it is to look after our hearts! Diabetes puts you at risk of heart disease - even if you have normal looking cholesterol ...and no symptoms. This is because diabetes can change the chemical makeup of some of the substances found in the blood and this can cause blood vessels to narrow or to clog up completely. One of the most important things to do to reduce the risk of heart disease is to meet with your doctor and/or Credentialled Diabetes Educator to discuss your individual risk factors and how to reduce them. Being physically active, eating a varied diet of healthy foods, managing high blood pressure, limiting alcohol intake, being smoke-free are some of the ways we can reduce the risks of developing heart disease when living with diabetes. 19.01.2022 This week is National Stroke week, and together with our friends at the Stroke Foundation, were celebrating F.A.S.T. Heroes, those people who knew the signs and saved a life. Across Australia, F.A.S.T. Heroes save lives every day, by simply knowing and recognising the signs of stroke and calling an ambulance immediately. They know that stroke is always a medical emergency and time is critical. This week, we are calling for more F.A.S.T. Heroes to potentially save the life ...of a loved one, a colleague, a stranger or even themselves. Become a F.A.S.T. Hero by learning and sharing the F.A.S.T. message and calling triple 000 straight away if you suspect a stroke.
