25.01.2022 Every minute of every day, a person with diabetes will face decisions, thoughts, worries and fears about their diabetes management, and the future impact diabet...es may have on their health. The daily burden of living with diabetes can be significant. Its estimated that people with diabetes face up to 180 diabetes-related decisions every day. Thats more than 65,000 extra decisions a year. Diabetes is relentless. Diabetes distress, anxiety and burnout are real complications of diabetes. This National Diabetes Week, Diabetes Australia is launching Heads Up on Diabetes - a new campaign focusing on the mental and emotional health impact of living with diabetes. National Diabetes Week provides us with an opportunity to have an important community conversation about the real impact diabetes can have on a persons mental and emotional wellbeing. This is a conversation we need to have. #NDW2020

25.01.2022 Healthy eating tips for Ramadan: If you live with diabetes and are observing Ramadan it is important to understand the impact fasting and other lifestyle cha...nges can have on your blood glucose levels. With only a short duration between iftar (dinner meal after sunset) and suhoor (breakfast meal before dawn), your food choices are important. For those living with diabetes, you want to make sure you eat foods that provide a good balance of nutrients, and will keep your blood glucose levels stable. Ideally, you should speak with your diabetes healthcare team to help support you through your fast. 24.01.2022 Gestational diabetes is now the fastest-growing type of diabetes in Australia. The number of women diagnosed with gestational diabetes has more than doubled ove...r the last 10 years alone. Stopping this trend is an important part of reducing the number of people who develop type 2 diabetes. Diabetes Australia, along with the Australian Diabetes Society, the Australian Diabetes Educators Association, and the Australasian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society, recently developed a position statement outlining what needs to be done to help women lower their risk of developing gestational diabetes and to provide appropriate support if they develop the condition. Providing women with the support they need to stay healthy pre, during and post-pregnancy will help many women address lifestyle-related risk factors and reduce the number of women developing the condition. 22.01.2022 As one of Queenslands most recognisable radio personalities, ABC Brisbanes Kelly Higgins-Devine knows what it is like to work under pressure. But what a lot o...f people dont know is that Kelly is also managing the day-to-day challenges of living with type 2 diabetes. I was diagnosed about a decade ago after developing gestational diabetes, Kelly says. Its been a rollercoaster and one of the things that a lot of people dont realise is that it can be tough mentally. Theres plenty to think about every single day. I have to think about my diabetes before I leave the house, during work, at lunch, at night. I have to factor diabetes in to so many different choices I make during the day." And then you are left worrying you havent done a good enough job. You always think could I have made better choices? It has been really helpful talking with a mental health professional about some of the challenges Ive faced living with diabetes. Reaching out and talking to someone helped me feel like I wasnt alone and I learnt some important skills to help me look after my mental health. It isnt easy but I keep working at it. If I had a message for people it would be speak up, get help. If youre feeling down today it doesnt always have to be this way, and its really important that you take of yourself the best you can. ***If youre living with diabetes and would like a free 45-minute conversation with a health care professional please call us on 1800 533 744. #NDW2020 #HeadsUpDiabetes

21.01.2022 For Mens Health Week we spoke to Tyson, a fourth-generation cattle farmer running around 600 head of cattle at his familys farm near Mt Gambier, about what it...s like to manage diabetes while working on a farm. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was ten so I havent really known anything different, but I think the main thing is you need to be prepared, Tyson said. For instance, I always need to keep enough insulin pens with me. Its a two-hour round trip to get new ones so you dont want to be caught short. Its an even bigger trip to see my endocrinologist but its not something I can skip. I mean its important for my health but I also need him to certify my truck license which I need to drive the tractor on the farm. It used to be pretty tough when I was pricking my fingers to take my blood glucose levels. Im not going to lie it got difficult to take my kit everywhere. Testing your glucose levels on a farm isnt easy. Youve got to get your kit out in the middle of mustering. Your hands are covered in dirt, cow poo, you never know what your hands are covered in. Now Im using Freestyle Libre which makes it easier to test my blood glucose levels when Im out working. Its just easy access, I can wave it over the sensor and this just helps me improve my diabetes management and my mental health. The best thing about farming is that every day is different. There is always something to do and Im certainly not going to let diabetes keep me from doing what I love.

09.01.2022 Of course we do -Theme for World Diabetes Day 2020

07.01.2022 One of the things that happens when someone develops type 2 diabetes is that the body loses its ability to respond to insulin. Insulin helps regulate the amount... of glucose in a persons blood. Understanding how and why this happens is an important part of developing new treatments and thats exactly what Dr Kim Loh, head of the Diabetes and Metabolic Disease laboratory at St Vincents Institute of Medical Research, is doing. We spoke to Dr Loh, who was awarded funding from the Diabetes Australia Research Program in 2019, about his diabetes research. My lab is interested in investigating why the body stops responding to insulin as it should, he said. We are currently trying to identify the critical molecules that cause the destruction of insulin producing beta cells. If successful, these studies could provide valuable new information to help researchers develop new treatments and therapies that could prevent people from developing type 2 diabetes. Great work, Dr Loh! Do you want to support important research like this? Go to our Dance4Diabetes page and donate! Every $ counts and goes towards improving the lives of people with diabetes. https://dance4diabetes.org.au/
