24.01.2022 A new US-based study reveals that strong social support was important to effective diabetes self-management. It also helped reduce the risks of diabetes-related hospitalisation and death. This was particularly true for people living with #type2diabetes. For people who feel vulnerable, changes to daily lifestyle - like new diets or exercise - can be difficult to maintain without the social support offered by family and friends.

23.01.2022 This week’s top pick at Brisbane Markets is the delicious apricot from Victoria and South Australia. This bright, juicy, fragrant fruit can be enjoyed on its own, used in savoury dishes or desserts. Choose apricots that are firm but not hard. Allow them to ripen at room temperature; however, once ripe store them in the refrigerator. Impress your guests, grill halved apricots (seed removed) and serve topped with a dollop of vanilla ice-cream and torn fresh mint leaves.... 19.01.2022 North Queensland has entered its peak production period and is delivering a bumper season of fresh fruit and vegetables at the Brisbane Produce Market this week. This weeks top pick is sweet red papaya from Far North Queensland. Look for ripe fruit with green and yellow skin that yields gently to pressure. Once ripe, store in the refrigerator for up to two days. To whip up a quick breakfast, drizzle papaya with lime juice, slice and combine with muesli and natural yoghurt... or simply add chunks in a fruit salad. 17.01.2022 Signs of Spring are everywhere at the Brisbane Produce Market this week with the abundance of fresh fruit and green leafy vegetables. This weeks hero is artichokes that has an armour-like exterior and a savoury-sweet heart. Artichoke is an intriguing vegetable as it is actually the bud of a thistle a flower. Choose artichokes that are plump and feel heavy for their size. Select deep green coloured artichokes with tightly closed petals and a firm stem. ... To test its freshness, hold them next to your ear and squeeze its leaves with your fingers. If you hear a squeak, the artichoke is very fresh. Savour the delicious nutty flavour of artichokes by serving the whole steamed flower with smoky, herb-flecked mayonnaise. Telehealth is an important service but I can see the difference face-to-face conversations make to many of my clients, Nicole said. 14.01.2022 A world first discovery from a University of Melbourne-led study found that the SMOC1 protein - which is naturally produced by the liver - can decrease blood glucose levels. An engineered form of SMOC1 could therefore potentially treat people with #type2diabetes. It (SMOC1) was more effective at improving blood glucose control than the current frontline medication called metformin. It also reduces fatty liver and blood cholesterol levels, which are common health problems in type 2 diabetes patients, said the lead author of the study Dr Magdalene Montgomery.

14.01.2022 GPs are pushing for on-the-spot testing to monitor people with chronic conditions such as diabetes, without having to order a blood test. They say a properly funded system will lead to faster care, and save patients time and money. The test measures the average exposure to blood glucose during a three-month period, and patients would take it every three to six months. It also removes the need for standard pathology tests where patients need to attend up to three medical appointments.

13.01.2022 Nurses are the silent heroes for many people living with diabetes, Diabetes Queensland CEO Sturt Eastwood said to mark #WorldDiabetesDayDay. Although diabetes is often not the primary cause of hospitalisation, once people living with diabetes are in hospital they need good transitional care and priority given to their diabetes, Mr Eastwood said. Nurses can make the difference between letting diabetes control you or living a long and healthy life with the condition. Mr Eas...twood asked the 260,000 Queenslanders living with diabetes to take a minute this World Diabetes Day on Nov 14 and think about the difference nurses make to their care. ***Use our comment section to say #ThankYou to a nurse today.*** #WDD2020 Featured nurse - Diabetes Queensland’s Nicole McClure, a Registered Nurse and Credentialled Diabetes Educator. 11.01.2022 #Discrimination. Many of the issues that we hear about from members are not one-off circumstances, but obstacles that are placed in the way of many people, because of their diabetes. A big one is discrimination, especially in workplaces. When an issue is repeatedly encountered by people living with diabetes, it indicates a systemic problem something can be done on a broad scale to try to change these experiences. For people living with either #type1diabetes1 or #type2d...iabetes, encountering difficulties in the workplace based on insulin injections, medical issues, exclusion from activities, refusal for shift or break changes and other issues are too commonplace. 06.01.2022 Researchers from the University of Iowa may have discovered a safe new non-invasive way to manage blood glucose. By exposing mice with diabetes to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) for a few hours per day, the team found it was able to normalise two major hallmarks of #type2diabetes. The effects are also long-lasting, opening the possibility of an EMF therapy being applied during sleep to manage diabetes all day. says Calvin Carter, one of the study’s lead authors. The unexpected and surprising discovery may have major implications in diabetes care, particularly for people who find current treatment regimens cumbersome.

06.01.2022 Good sleep is an often-neglected lifestyle factor that also plays an important role in helping to achieve weight loss results. Sleep duration influences metabolism, particularly blood glucose metabolism. When food is eaten, our bodies release insulin to process the glucose in our blood. However, sleep loss can impair our bodies response to insulin, reducing its ability to uptake glucose. Physical activity may show promise as a countermeasure against the detrimental impact of poor sleep.

02.01.2022 A growing number of researchers think that there is a relationship between #COVID19 and #diabetes. And the relationship between the coronavirus and diabetes is actually a two-way street. Researchers tracking the impact of COVID-19 have seen blended features of both #type1diabetes and #type2diabetes showing up spontaneously in people who’d recently been diagnosed with COVID-19. Now they are gathering data to answer these questions: How often is COVID-19 associated with new-...onset diabetes? Whether type 1, type 2, or a new form of the condition? What exactly causes the metabolic malfunction? How long do such cases of diabetes last, and what are the best ways to treat them? See more

01.01.2022 Around 4 million Australian adults have a vitamin D deficiency. A new study from Peking University in Beijing has found higher levels of vitamin D in the body are linked to a lower risk for #type2diabetes; with a strong interaction between levels of the vitamin and overall sleep patterns on the risk of type 2. These findings may change diabetes prevention strategies by lifting levels of vitamin D supplementation among people with sleep disorders.
