15.01.2022 We asked this question late last year and had a mix of yes and no's. We thought we would take the New Year as an opportunity to highlight the importance of understanding the signs and symptoms of Diabetic Ketoacidosis and hopefully increase the number of people who can answer yes to this very important question! Diabetic Ketoacidosis a serious condition associated with illness or very high blood glucose levels in type 1 diabetes. ... It develops gradually over hours or days and is a sign of insufficient insulin. Learn more about the signs and symptoms here: https://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/ketoacidosis

14.01.2022 A little information

12.01.2022 What's that thing on your arm? Ahhh, my most commonly asked question, in fact most strangers ask about my hardware before they bother with my name. I have Type... 1diabetes and I wear a DexcomG5 on my arm at ALL times (Yes I mean all times, I actually can't remember the last time a was naked). The Dexcom monitors my blood glucose and uses Bluetooth to communicate to a crowd sourced Android app called Xdrip. It even talks to a URL address that can be viewed by anyone, anytime, anywhere. If you think people on your socials are a bit noesy imagine having your dad call you from another state telling you to lay off the carbs! Now let's look at this statement a little more; "I have Type one Diabeties" So let me just put a few things out hear.... - Type 1 Diabeties is an autoimmune disease, there is no cure. Insulin mearly keeps me alive so I can die at a similar pace to y'all. - Its not my fault I have Diabeties and it's definitely not my parents fault either. The cause is still relatively unknown even in this age of modern medicine. - Type 1 & 2 Diabeties are different conditions so much so that they really shouldn't have the same name. HOT TIP: know the difference! 1Type 1= Chronic autoimmune disease 2Type 2= Metabolic disorder - No, it's not caused by sugar or poor diet. It has nothing to do with exercise and lifestyle. I'm actually a qualified Personal Trainer and Nutritionist so trust me I'm somewhat in the know. - Yes, I have to inject insulin. Yesterday administered 7 injections of insulin, in fact by the time my feet hit the floor each morning I've already taken 2 injections. As for how many injections I will require today??? Well who knows, really?!? - Having Diabeaties requires me to stay inside a set blood glucose level (4.0mmL to 8.0mmL). Your body does this naturally, mine requires 1unit of injected insulin per 10gms or carbs. Now to put that in perspective a Maccas cheese burger has 28.6g of carbs. - The amount of insulin I am required to inject in order to drink a glass of Coca-Cola would kill you in around 45mins to and hour. - Its not quite as simple as carbs ingested + insulin injected = Happy days! += Pretty much everything effects blood glucose; weather, sleep, hormones, sickness, caffeine, hydration, stress, exercise the lists goes on for days! Management of diabetes is difficult as its not the same each day. - If I have low blood glucose it is an emedate threat to my life, this can happen at any time even while I sleep. However it can be rectified quickly with carbs (I use jelly beans). Recovery from physical symptoms usually takes around 15mins but mental recovery can take hours. - If I have high blood glucose it is a long term threat to my overall health and causes permanent damages to my body and brain. Recovery from high blood glucose can take hours and even days. It also takes a 3 pronged approach of exercise, water and insulin. The mental effects of prolonged high blood glucose is indescribable after 3 years living with diabeaties I still can not put words to the mental effects of prolonged high blood glucose it's honestly awful and truly effects my ability to conduct my daily tasks. Now in the last few months I've had some absolutely brutal interactions with well meaning strangers (often these interactions come about when people notice the Dexcom on my arm). I've recently had a lady at my Gym class claim she can cure my with a liquid diet (she also told me she could see my aura) she actually chases me down every week at the Gym to organise to cure me. I've had the doterra "wellness advocates" promise me cures in the form of expensive oils. I've been told plant based eating will undo my diabetes . I've been told I should be ashamed because I'm a burden on the health system and I should just take better care of myself and make room for the real sick people. I've been told I can't eat cake! I even was told by one random guy that I had diabetes because I ate too may foods form the deadly night shade which basically means this guy thinks potatoes are giving people diabetes. Honestly I could go on and on and on with the list of dumb shit (And hurtful shit) people say to me about diabetes. So if your still reading this super long post, your probably wondering why I'm taking the time to write this? Well awareness starts within our close social circles and spreads outwards. In the interest of creating awerenes I thought I would generate this post in the hope that a few of you will read it and maybe learn a bit more about the old beeties? Over and out!

10.01.2022 Merry Christmas to you all! And remember to look out for each other

07.01.2022 Great news this morning - we are another step closer to affordable access to CGM and Flash for all people with type 1 diabetes Free Freestyle Libre Flash glucose monitoring is now available through the Continuous Glucose Monitoring Initiative. The Australian Government has also removed the high needs criteria that was making it difficult for many people aged over 21 with a concession card to access CGM. ... Now, if you have a valid concession card, you can access free CGM or Freestyle Libre without having to jump through those hoops. Young people with type 1 diabetes under 21 and women who are pregnant or planning pregnancy can now also access Flash glucose technology. For people who aren’t eligible and still can’t afford the technology, please know we are not done yet. We will continue to fight for affordable access to CGM or Flash for all.
