25.01.2022 It's International Youth Day, and the perfect opportunity to celebrate the incredible passion, integrity and enthusiasm of the young people in our community. This year, the United Nations' theme is "Youth Engagement for Global Action" and we've seen some truly amazing steps taken by our Gen Z community to combat international issues and speak up against injustice and inequality. At DVLC, we are incredibly proud of our young students, especially within our incredible, close-kn...it VCAL program. We've seen some outstanding change and growth from students who have started with us in a place of difficulty and disadvantage, only to go on to start incredible careers in nursing, accounting, and community services. To see such success really proves how resilient and strong our youth are, and we're truly humbled and inspired by every one of them. To our students, we're missing seeing you all in-centre, but hope that you'll be back in a safe, supportive and fun classroom soon. While times might be especially difficult right now, know that the DVLC team is here to support you in growing, learning and shaping your journey, however that might look for you. Together, we can create a better future for everyone.
24.01.2022 Learning a new language can be tricky to stick with, so here's a few tips to keep in mind if you're looking to expand your linguistic skills! 1. Know your Motivation Why do you want to learn this new language? Do you want to converse with a friend in their native language, travel to a new country or just be able to watch your favourite Netflix show without subtitles? Whatever your motivation, note it down to refer back to if you're struggling, or to guide you in your learning... focus (e.g. prioritise listening and speaking skills if your motivation is to converse in the language). 2. Be Consistent Like with any skill, building a regular habit to study or converse in the language is key! Even 5-10 minutes of quickly reviewing some vocabulary or chatting to yourself in the language can make a difference. 3. Find a Learning Partner If you have a friend or family member who is also interested in learning the language, have regular check-ins and study sessions together to help motivate you both. You can also look at getting a pen-pal or texting buddy who speaks the language natively online or via an app like HelloTalk. 4. Immerse Yourself in Media There's no better way to improve your listening and reading skills than by consuming different forms of media in your chosen language. Research podcasts, find songs you love, watch movies or read a book in the language you're learning to reinforce your study, and help you understand the use of the language in context. Podcasts, music and movies are a great way to help you with pronunciation as well! 5. Have Fun With It! Join a class or community group where you can immerse yourself both in your chosen language and the country's culture. Seek out recipes written in that language and cook a traditional meal. Have a dance party to music from that country. Learning doesn't have to be a chore - make it your own and enjoy it! If you're interested in learning Spanish, Italian or Auslan, we regularly run classes both online and in-centre. Our next Spanish Beginners and Intermediate courses start tomorrow, with other language classes available over the remainder of the year. Give our centre a call on (03) 9435 9060 or email [email protected] for more information or to enrol!
