25.01.2022 Waking today to smoke over Canberra only accentuates the intensity of some dreams I had about fires a few years ago.These series of dreams were intense enough t...o make me do some research and ask questions, look for some solutions and of course to make art work. A victim of fire on TV recently said I thought I was in a war zone and that quote has stayed in my mind and there are many comparisons between war and fire to be made. Through research on the internet (though statistics can change on each site) I found that Australia has around 50,000 to 60,000 fires per year of which up to 40 to 50% are suspiciously lit. Arson is environmental terrorism and reaches deep into our society, mental illness, neglect such as flicking a cigarette butt or unattended fires on campsites, and simple accidents through ignorance ie. the backyard incinerator to get rid of garden waste or heaters near flammable items in built up areas. Natural and unnatural fires have been part of our country and global warming has intensified and focussed our attention but I feel we need to address all the issues, not only the effects on land, flora and fauna and human beings but the economics of fire itself. Insurance, displacement, the human conditions of health and wellbeing. The effect of fires last generations and with some support almost half of the fires could be stopped. No matter where the beginning, lets work for a greater understanding of the larger tragedy. The following are some artists books I have made over the last couple of years just contemplating Australias fires. 2019 is the tenth anniversary of one of our worst bushfires Black Saturday. This foire was an inferno of destruction that caused 173 deaths, injured 414, 2,000 homes destroyed, burnt 450,000 hectares and killed around 1,000,000 animals. I hope we go into 2020 better equipped and more aware and able to address the issues around "fire". See more

Australia averages 52,000 bushfires a year with half being deliberately or suspiciously lit. I was in a war zone is a quote that has stayed in my mind from a victim describing what it was like being in the middle of a bushfire that got out of control but had been deliberately lit. Another victim stated that they were confused as to whether to fight or take flight. I felt the flora and fauna have no voice. 2019 is the tenth anniversary of the Black Saturday fires and a time to think about the effect of natural and unnatural fires on the environment. Fight or flight contemplates the devastation caused to flora, fauna and those touched by fire.

Minnie, our 15 year old family pet is having s...uch a hard time breathing and knowing that I can only make her comfortable, cool and hydrated is not enough. I cannot imagine how the many others are going out there in the thick of it and I know my imagination is weak in comparison to the real deal.
