22.01.2022 ? If someone is at the door and you are alone and feel a bit frightened, pretend there is someone else ...in the house. If someone wants to use your telephone for an emergency, don’t feel rude not to let them in. Offer to make the call for them if they are genuine, they won’t mind. Be suspicious of people requesting entry to your home to check appliances or equipment. Ask to see their identity card and take time to look at it carefully before letting them in. If you are still unsure, ring their company to check. If in doubt, keep them out. Make sure your home number can be clearly seen from the street. This not only helps in emergencies but helps visitors to find your home (and not accidentally going to the wrong address!) Be discreet if you live alone. It is better not to indicate on house directories or name plates that you are a Ms, Miss, Mrs or Mr. Just use your surname. If you live alone, make arrangements to have regular contact with someone your trust. Try setting up a code like three rings on a telephone each morning, or simply lifting your blind up at the start of each day so they know you’re okay. ALWAYS call Triple Zero (000) in an emergency.

17.01.2022 THE IMPORTANCE OF SECURITY LIGHTING Criminals don’t like to be seen. Security lighting can be installed around the perimeter of your property, including over ...entry ways, along your driveway and the back of the house, revealing any possible hiding places for thieves. The lighting should be checked regularly and maintained. Consider using light timers to turn these lights on/off when not at home.

15.01.2022 Many break-ins are via forced entry through the attached garage. Once inside, thieves have direct access to your home. You can prevent this with the following t...ips: Install a solid, exterior grade door between your home's interior and the garage. Install a deadbolt on that door and keep it locked. Keep your garage door remote with you. Do not store it in your car. Always keep your car locked, even when it's parked in the garage. Make sure the garage door and motor are regularly serviced to keep them in tip-top working order. Brandi Ibrao via Unsplash

14.01.2022 Winter is a time where home fires become even more of a risk. There are some simple steps you can follow to reduce your risk of a fire in your home. Never lea...ve cooking unattended If you have a fireplace make sure the chimney is clean and make sure there is a screen in front of it when it is in use Check electric blankets for damaged or frayed cords before placing it on the bed Take care keeping curtains, tablecloths and bedding away from portable heaters Keep wet clothing at least 1 metre away from heaters or fireplaces Clean the lint filter to your clothes dryer every time you use it Only use one appliance per power point and switch off power point when not in use Always extinguish candles or any other open flames before going to bed. Never leave open flames unattended and always handle candles or any other open flame with care Store matches and lighters in a secure place not accessible to young children. Remember that smoke from a fire will make you confused and that you cannot see in smoke When asleep you will not smell smoke and it will in fact put you into a deeper sleep. If you have escaped from a home fire, remember once you get out, stay out and call Triple Zero (000). Oil, gas or wood heating units may require a yearly maintenance check Only ever use fuses of recommended rating and install an electrical safety switch. 06.01.2022 WHAT TO DO IF YOU LOSE YOUR MOBILE PHONE... Losing our mobile phone can be very distressing, especially these days when they are so much more than ‘just’ a phon...e. If you lose your phone it is important to report this to the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 (24/7) as you will need an EVENT NUMBER if you are claiming insurance. REMEMBER to have your IMEI number ready. This is a serial number specific to your phone and you can find it on the box if you still have it. 01.01.2022 SAFETY IN TRAINS Travelling on a train is a convenient and cost effective way of travelling from A to B. However, there are things to consider to help increase... your personal safety. Travel in the guard’s compartment identified by a blue light, or in the carriages that have groups of people that could assist if needed. Travel in groups of friends if you can If alone, identify someone you would feel comfortable to sit near and smile at them this will also reassure them that you are someone of good character Arrive at the station as close to the departure time of the train as possible and stand where the station is well lit. If you can, choose a seat where you have a good view of the carriage and there is nothing at your back Do NOT fall asleep, be aware and alert Make sure you secure your belongings by placing items at your feet and hooking your feet around straps, or hooking your arm through straps if items are beside you. The Police Assistance Line takes reports daily from people who have fallen asleep and had their property stolen from right next to them.
