There are two cameras now operating in Queensland, but they are not fixed and can be moved to any location, including bridges, red lights and mobile phone towers. Drivers will not receive any warning about the location of the phone detection cameras the same penalties for driving while on your mobile phone apply. ... NOTE: The penalty in Queensland for driving while using a mobile phone has now increased and is $1,000 and FOUR demerit points. The mobile phone detection cameras have been designed to tell the difference between a mobile phone and other device before the image is taken. The device can also detect if a seat belt is not being worn. Phone detection devices are still live in New South Wales and have now been active for over five months. The penalty in New South Wales for driving whilst using a mobile phone is $396 and FIVE demerit points.
