20.01.2022 Ship abandoned - SS Dicky online gallery and 3D videos The Screw Steamer Dicky (SS Dicky as she is affectionately known) was an iron-hulled steamship, launch...ed in Germany in 1883. The ship carried general cargo including timber, coal, passengers, horses, dynamite, pearl shell, mail, equipment, tallow and hides between ports in Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia. On 4 February 1893, the SS Dicky was deliberately driven ashore at Caloundra during heavy seas to prevent it being wrecked on the rocks at Moffat Beach. In the end, after four attempts to re-float the vessel, she was abandoned. The shipwreck has long been an attraction for holiday-makers, swimmers, surfers, and photographers, as well as a significant heritage icon. Parts of the main portion of the keel and hull remain buried at the beach. DID YOU KNOW? Dicky Beach is the only recreational beach in the world to be named after a shipwreck. Check out the online image gallery on our heritage website, plus you watch 3D videos of the reconstructed SS Dicky, 3D images of excavated wreck pieces and the film Time and Tide The SS Dicky story. http://ow.ly/XMmn50zZoOu Picture Sunshine Coast #ourheritageourstories #ssdicky

18.01.2022 BEACH CARPARKS TO CLOSE AS AUTHORITIES CLAMP DOWN ON NON ESSENTIAL TRAVEL From midnight tonight the following Sunshine Coast beach carparks will be closed...... Coolum Beach Maroochydore Beach Alex Beaches Mooloolaba Beach (Inclusive of main carpark) Kawana Dicky Beach Moffatt Beach Happy Valley Mudjimba Buddina - at Kawana Surf Club Bulcock Carparks at Noosa Main Beach and Claude Batten Drive will also be shut in an attempt to stop unnecessary travel to and around the region over the weekend. Qld Parks and Wildlife Service is shutting the car park to Noosa National Park. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says they received a request from Queensland Health to consider the closures to stop people gathering in large groups over the Easter weekend. "The decision by the Gold Coast to close three beaches has also heightened the risk that people of south-east Queensland will travel to the Sunshine Coast to use our beaches," Cr Jamieson said "These measures are absolutely necessary to reduce the risk of transmission of the corona novel 19 pandemic." Acting Superintendent Jason Overland says extra police will be patrolling this weekend, checking why drivers are out and about. "We'll have extra police in and around the Sunshine Coast intercepting vehicles and asking people what their reason is for essential travel," Supt Overland said. "You can rest assured there will be no car parking for you when you go to Noosa."
