25.01.2022 I wonder who will be my 10000th new client? Only 97 people to go. Must think of a nice present for them to celebrate.

25.01.2022 (Glad I live in Qld -much warmer.) Just heading back from a workshop on Department of Veterans’ Affairs Workshop. DVA happy for information to be shared via social media. Key points-... Treatment cycle will start in October 2019. TPI veterans are exempt from the Treatment Cycle for Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology. Veterans’ can access more than 1 treatment cycle per year if required. Main change is that allied health will be communicating more with your Doctor at the end of each 12 visit cycle. Allied Health Professionals will be paid to provide a report back to a Veteran’s GP after each cycle. See more

24.01.2022 #heartweek Maybe everyone over the age of 40 should go and get their blood pressure checked this week if you haven't had it checked in the last year

24.01.2022 A recent food security (hidden hunger) survey found 1 in 3 households are experiencing food insecurity in Australia. Mostly due to lack of money. Lots of financial pressures such as housing, energy and water affordability. 6% of Australian children have gone hungry at least once in the past fortnight. Thank you to Prof Gallegos for presenting data on this important issue in Australia.

23.01.2022 GI and satiety. Dr Alan Barclay presented research on low GI foods and their effect on hunger and satiety. The latest 2012 stats show that Australians eat about 43% of their energy from carbohydrate (moderate carbohydrate). Low GI carbs include corn, apples, whole grain breads, milk, yoghurt, etc. Dr Barclay's research found that low GI foods can result in a 42% improvement in satiety and 25% reduction in the drive to eat.

19.01.2022 Dietary restraint and food restriction are sure-fire ways to feel addicted. Eating disorder experts know restriction leads to food preoccupation. The minute ...a human being is told we can’t have something, chances are we will want it even more (even if we never wanted the thing in the first place!). https://benourished.org/rethinking-food-addiction/

18.01.2022 I feel sorry for porridge. It’s so rich in nutrients, yet it doesn’t get the swanky ‘superfood’ label, and almost seen as the poor man’s food. Well it’s one of ...the most wonderful things you can eat. Fibre for your gut bugs to feed off, and beta glucans to protect you heart. Kick ar$e carbs so that you can actually think and store memories during the day. . As you know, I would LOVE to open a non-wanky nutrition cafe and this would be on the breakfast menu. Porridge with treacle, topped with creme fraiche (cultured with Jeffie, made by @taniavwf ). Served steaming hot with a delicious coffee.

18.01.2022 Four and a half years training for me - best bits were trying to cook special diets (eg gluten free rice bread), biochemistry of food, microbiology and food safety and learning about how food interacts to improve peoples health. The learning and tasting different foods is continuous! #knowlovefood

17.01.2022 Well after 20 years working from Southernex X-rays it's time for a move. Looking forward to starting to work from Caboolture Physical Therapy Centre today.

16.01.2022 Lunch box idea for children (and big children) that don't want to eat sandwiches....

16.01.2022 Well I'm calling it, South- East Queensland is officially in summer! I only start looking for salads when it gets hot - this salad recipe uses asparagus which is in season at the moment.

16.01.2022 The Gluten Free Food Expo is on this weekend Saturday May 20 and Sunday May 21 - this is a great chance to try a range of gluten free products if you have recently been diagnosed with Coeliac disease. Top tip - take notes of the products that tasted good (and those that didn't).

14.01.2022 If you had a life threatening peanut food allergy which of these food labels indicate a higher risk? (A) Manufactured in a facility which also processes peanuts. (B) May be Present peanuts, contains soy, contains milk, May be Present wheat. (C) May contain traces or peanuts and/ or tree nuts.... Did you pick (a) or (c)? Many people do and would be wrong. Research by Zurzolo in 2013 showed that families of children with allergies, dietitians and nurses thought the "May be present" warning was lower than the other warnings. Unfortunately, many of these warnings don't help people make an informed decision on risk of contamination. However, "May be present" means that the food may be a high risk of contamination with a food allergen. Food companies that have assessed each food processing step and assessed that there is a high risk of cross contamination put the specific warning "May be present".

14.01.2022 More research is needed but Nutritional psychiatry is a growing discipline that focuses on the use of food and supplements to provide these essential nutrients ...as part of an ''integrated'' or ''alternative'' treatment for mental health disorders. http://theconversation.com/why-nutritional-psychiatry-is-th

12.01.2022 Thank you to Compound Chemist for this info on the chemistry of a hangover.

12.01.2022 Mangoes are a polarizing fruit - you either love them or hate them. They are a great source of b-carotene which our bodies make into Vitamin A and a good source of Vitamin C. But did you know their skin has something in common to poison ivy? Thank you to Compound Chem for diagram.

12.01.2022 Don’t buy alkaline water. The pH will change as soon as it hits your stomach. They forget to mention that on the bottle, don’t they.

11.01.2022 Mediterranean eating patterns have been shown to protect people from heart disease, type 2 diabetes, can slow cognitive decline and reduce mortality. With a high extra virgin olive oil content (3-4 tbsp / day), high fruit and vegetable consumption (1kg per day), nuts, dairy, legumes, seafood, it also helps people feel full and satisfied.

10.01.2022 Some health stats on men's health - if 30% of a man's health is determined by his genetics, that means small lifestyle changes could make big differences.....play with the kids in the yard on weekends, 1 more home prepared meal a week (1 less take away), talking to a mate rather than bottling up the stress or having an extra alcoholic drink....

08.01.2022 Thank you to compound chemist for a different take on one of Australia's festive fruits - the cherry. There have been a limited number of studies looking at reducing or preventing gout by eating large daily doses of cherries (280g per day). Enjoy.

07.01.2022 Great talk at the Dietitians conference this morning by Alla Wolf-Tasker owner of Lake House one of Australia's best country restaurants. Some of the points she raised were: Farmers being encouraged to grow fruit and vegetables that travel well rather than for taste and flavour. The reminder that growing your own or buying from local farmers means that it is sustainable and better for the environment but will also taste better.

06.01.2022 "Pursuing weight loss is not a way to take care of yourself. Chronic stress and weight dissatisfaction influence your health. Feeling dissatisfied with your b...ody supports a state of being that is not holistically health-promoting. The fat shaming rampant in our culture places blame on people and their health behaviors as the primary cause of having a larger body size, while leaving out all the other factors that influence weight and health. 04.01.2022 Tradie Tucker Tips - Keep it Simple If you are a tradie, what tips to do you for healthy lunches? Jamie and Mark Witte (MJ Witte Builder) are brothers (and my cousins) and both are chippies and builders. When I heard it was Tradie Health Month I thought of them as I know they eat and enjoy healthy lunches.... ‘Nothing special gets done here’ was Mark’s comment and he keeps healthy eating simple by taking leftovers or meat and salad or sandwiches and fruit. Jamie said one of his favourite lunches was a salad including lettuce, grated carrot, cheese, boiled egg, tin of tuna with mayo or salad dressing. Mark packs fruit and nut mix or several pieces of fruit for his snacks. He keeps it simple while getting plenty of energy to get him through the day. http://dietitianservicesqld.com.au/blog/
