20.01.2022 Welcome to this week's Diggers CC 60th Anniversary time warp... not too far back! A decade ago (obviously) we celebrated 50 years with a huge year of celebrations off the field! Unfortunately, on-field was a different story with no senior teams making Grand Finals... but that's cricket! After minor premierships and a narrow GF loss in 1sts & and minor/major premiership in 3rds the year before, hopes were high that our 50th year would be the one. The season started out as they... always do... with a Steve Meakins one-knee cover drive on the back page of the paper. "Always the bridesmaid, never the bride" was Greg White's quote in The Advocate... with FIVE GF losses since our last 1st grade title in 1994/95. We had a tremendous squad which would, in hindsight, serve us well in future seasons with trophies in 2012/13 & 2014/15)... just not this one! An early highlight: Title holders Diggers 3rds started the season in record fashion, defeating Coffs Tigers outright with Paul Graham obliterating the opposition with 15/33... including 9/20 in the first innings. Still a 3rd grade record. Off the field, Diggers CC hosted a huge 50th Anniversary Dinner, with special guest speaker, former test cricketer and larrikin Rodney Hogg. It was the night we named our Diggers CC 50-year Team, a mix of club legends old and new(ish) (in batting order): Rod Kratz (c) Tony Mainey Dave Heptonstall Brian Schweitzer Craig Haworth Stephen Meakins Ross Haworth (vc) Don Easy Graeme Henry Terry Herbert Robert Alford Tony Dean The following morning, some weary heads took the field for the Diggers CC Legends Match - Current 1st Grade vs Diggers Old Boys. The Old Boys managed 9/150 from their 30 overs with the Webeck family top scoring, but were no match for the younglings. Alex Byrne retired on 50, including five 6's and Meako sured up the middle order to guide them home in 22 overs. As we enter our 60th season, we don't know how many large gatherings we'll get in due to COVID-19 restrictions... but stay tuned for more info as the season approaches. See you at training!

17.01.2022 Get on down for Turf Sessions 2 tomorrow (Wednesday 16 Sept) from 3 - 5.30pm at the Stadium nets. Get some valuable time on the grass before the 2020/21 season! New and old players welcome!
16.01.2022 Turf Session 1 is done and dusted... thanks to the Stadium staff for getting these pitches up for local cricketers. Smells like cricket season... Haydos and Reuben were charging in... Meako was cover driving on one knee... Donny was bowling bouncers to 13 year olds... see ya next week!
16.01.2022 Round 7 results: 1st GRADE: Coffs Colts 4/197 (J. Paff 2/33, S. Mehlert 1/17, T. Adams 1/37) defeated Diggers 161 (N. Bennie 33, M. Haworth 31, R. Carey 22)... Not a great day in the field for Diggers against Coffs Colts last Saturday at Fitzroy Oval. Some wayward bowling and fielding has been creeping into our performances for a few weeks now and this week was certainly no exception. Colts got off to a steady start on the back of some generous sundries early on. Even with the freebies, runs off the bat were still hard to come by and we were still confident that we could restrict them to well under 150. However, it was not to be as Colts dug in and took a modest run rate at drinks of 4 to a competitive rate of 6 by over 40 with some great late overs hitting. Diggers once again rueing opportunities to tighten up the late overs and take vital wickets. The Diggers reply began poorly to say the least with a little misfortune as the top order collapsed again. As always, when you're running low on luck, the cricket gods seem to take great delight in rubbing your nose in it! That's cricket. It was left to our ever-reliable raving cucumber farmer Mark Haworth and Nick Bennie to steady. Colts settled into the same sundries rut as we did, ironic considering they cheered every no ball and wide we bowled . Diggers were travelling along well until Howie got tangled up in his pads. A regular flow of wickets followed as the game slowly slipped away from our grasp. Reuben showed some late fight with the bat to bolster his case for a promotion, but it was too little too late. Two losses on the trot and some deep soul searching to do... 2nd GRADE: Nana Glen White 4/170 (B. Cunningham 1/16, K. Bhukya 1/21) defeated Diggers 8/169 (B. Oliver 56, T. Shipman 20) 3rd GRADE: Nana Glen White 6/147 (J. Goodfellow 2/32, M. McLaughlin 1/6) defeated Diggers Blue 8/146 (H. Creighton 50 no, J. Goodfellow 32) Diggers Maroon defeated Bellingen on forfeit UNDER 16: Sawtell 2/111 (L. McLaughlin 2/15) defeated Diggers 7/107 (R. Cross 46, A Plumb 16) UNDER 14: Diggers 5/116 (J. Cross 38no, T. Swan 17no) defeated Northern Districts 7/23 (C. Wallace 4/8) UNDER 10: Not scored

08.01.2022 This week’s history post only takes us back less than two years but to us Covidites, it feels like 20! The cauldron of Fitzroy Oval played host to Round 11 of NCCC Premier Grade 2018/19 season, Diggers led by Trevor Bailey verses the Macksvillians from Star Hotel CC. Star Hotel batted first and it was a forgettable day with the ball for Diggers in the January heat. To quote the great J. Paff Win Vision had us at 1% after a pretty ordinary 40 overs in the field. Captain, p...Continue reading

08.01.2022 It's Diggers CC history time again kids... let's examine the 'Drought Breaker' of season 2012/13 ... our first top grade victory in 18 years since the 1994/95 decider. It should come as no surprise that Meako was in that last premiership side! Season 12/13 was plagued with unfortunate weather, leaving long stretches of little to no match practice. Only 9 games garnered a result from 15 rounds of competition. Diggers finished second on the ladder behind an undefeated Sawtell, ...who dominated the shortened regular season. The 2452 juggernaut, bolstered by Irish international David Langford-Smith, finished the season on 77 points, 23 and 24 points clear of 2nd & 3rd place respectively. Sawtell's first taste of defeat was the Major Semi Final when they were cleaned up for 87 in the first innings and ultimately outrighted by Diggers. Russell Gardner taking 6/10 off 11 overs! After an epic Preliminary Final victory over Colts, Sawtell earned the right to exact revenge on the Joe Willman skippered Diggers CC in the big dance! Diggers batted first and showed intent from the first ball. After some middle order hiccups, we scratched out a competitive total of 196 from 70 overs. Star batsman Raja Sandhu contributed 44 from No. 3. But it was Ol' Faithfull... the balding master... the one-kneed bandit... Steve Meakins who propped up the prolonged Diggers resistance and finished on 67no. Langford-Smith and Simon Landrigan finished with 4 wickets each. Sawtell captain Trent Mitchell opened the batting for Sawtell, no doubt keen to set the tone early in the innings as he is renowned for. Fortunately for Diggers, the only tone he set was the celebratory one of the bowling side as the captain found himself back in the shed in the first over. The Sawtell top order uncharacteristically stumbled, finding themselves at the mercy of the Diggers attack and runs increasingly hard to come by. Glen Kesby was frugal as always with only 9 runs coming from his 8 overs. At 4 for 23, Sawtell sparked a minor middle order revival before faltering again to be 7/68. Future Diggers batsman, Gus Garland took it upon himself to instigate the last stand, but by the time Sandhu rattled his castle on 24, the white flag was raised and Diggers tidied up the tail in quick time. Brad Carey trapped Chril Neal in front as the celebrations began. Sawtell, minor premiers by a mile, undefeated season, stacked with talent, rolled in the GF by a rampant, hungry Diggers CC for 102. A 94 run win to gloriously end the 18 year premiership drought. 2nd & 3rd also challenged for titles on Grand Final day. 2nds went down to Sawtell after Quirky destroyed Diggers with 8/54. Hoady's thirds, however, brought home the bacon by 4 wickets after a matching winning 6/52 and 41 with the bat from Tim Anderson.
