25.01.2022 Remember all those that served. Originally known as Armistice Day, Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November and marks the signing of the peace agreement between Germany and the Allies that ended the Great War of 1914-1918. The Second World War began just 21 years later. Almost a million Australians served during that conflict lasted close to six years. Armistice Day was then renamed Remembrance Day.... Now Remembrance Day is a day to remember and honour all Australians who have served. #remembranceday #lestweforget #veteransday #remembrance #poppies #veteran #digger #diggerstribute

21.01.2022 Happy birthday to Florence Craig (nee Robe) who turns 100 today. Florence, born in Colac Victoria, joined the Royal Australian Air Force in July 1942 and was an... aircraftwoman. Florence was stationed in Adelaide when the war ended and she said it was ‘the best day you can imagine’. Florence’s advice for younger serving personnel is ‘do what you want to do set a goal and try your best to achieve it’. Florence developed some long-term friendships while serving, in particular with Marg Eck, Nettie Hinstan, and Betty Andrews. After the war, Florence raised her two children with her late husband Lesley, and she also enrolled in a cooking course, although admits she was not a very good chef. She wrote three small books detailing her life as a child. Her father passed away when she was ten and her mother raised Florence and her five siblings on her own. Florence donated all the proceeds from the books to cancer research as Lesley passed away from cancer in 2001. Florence credits her long life to good genes. Her older sister Belle is still alive today, aged 102. Happy birthday Florence and thank you for your service. #TYFYS #OurVeterans

14.01.2022 For many years hundreds of Motorcyclists have participated in the Ride for Justice in Sydney that raises funds to help support the Homicide Victims Support Group (HVSG) and the amazing work they do. As you would know this event is Championed by Simon Bouda, well-known Channel Nine Crime & Terror reporter. Sadly this year, owing to the COVID restrictions, the ride was unable to go ahead. As you can imagine this has put a huge dent in the fund raising activities desperately ...needed to keep this vital service going. A Patch for 2020 to acknowledge the reasons why a ride couldn’t happen was floated and the Military Shop is proud to come on board to help with this cause. This means that every patch sold will have 100% of the purchase price donated to the HVSG. Whilst it may not get to the dizzy heights of fundraising that the enthusiastic riders normally bring to the event it will be better than doing nothing. After all every little bit helps. 05.01.2022 Ambassador Nigel Allsopp. We are honoured that Nigel Allsopp, Australian ANZAC of the year 2017 and Australia Day Citizen of the year 2019 is our very special A...mbassador representing Australia and New Zealand. We couldn’t have found anyone more illustrious and appropriate; Nigel is a veteran of military overseas deployments and a decorated police officer. He served in the Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces for over 25 years, and has spent a lifetime working with animals, initially as a Military Working Dog handler. Nigel is the Founder and President of the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation (AWAMO) and the driving force behind the establishment of memorials honouring the deeds and sacrifices of animals in wars. He is a published author of ten books on Police and Military animals and is a recognised subject matter expert. Nigel has established over 30 war animal memorials all over the world. In June 2017 he opened the WWI War Animal memorial in Pozieres, France. The memorial honours all animals from all nations. Today, Nigel remains in uniform where he is an operational explosive detection dog handler for the Queensland Police Service. He is a qualified Mounted Police Officer having undertaken basic and advanced Police riding courses in California, USA and is a member of the The Australian Light Horse Association Ceremonial troop. On National Animal Day on August 23, and to show Australian support to our cause, he laid a purple poppy wreath at the Army Veterinary Corps war animal memorial in Queensland (photo 2) and over many months he has given us advice and wise counsel. We were delighted when he flew over especially to lead Ambassador representatives from Canada, America, France and New Zealand in the laying of wreaths at the unveiling of Poppy our War Horse in Ascot on June 8, 2018. Nigel tell us; Horses have been used in law enforcement for centuries. They were the fastest and surest form of transportation. Even after cars became common, many law enforcement agencies continued to use mounted patrols the world over. Mounted police are police who patrol on horseback (equestrians) they continue to serve in both rural and metropolitan areas where their day-to-day function may range from being used for crime prevention in high visibility policing roles, searching for missing persons in remote areas or in the thick of a public disorder riot. They are the ten foot cops. Ten Foot Cops is the name of Nigel’s latest book and you can buy it in the UK from Amazon now for 13.94 at this link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0648823628 See - https://bit.ly/3jcZrAd

05.01.2022 Pictured are just one section of two regiments of Australian Light Horse that on the 31st of October 1917, braved shell and machine-gun fire to gallop over 3 miles of open plain, and with bayonets drawn, charge the Turkish stronghold of Beersheba. The men and horses were ravenously thirsty, the horses having had no water for nearly 60 hours, which gave an urgency to the attack, for once the horses smelled water there was no stopping them. TheTurks overwhelmed by the speed and ...sheer audacity of the attack, failed to lower their gun-sights quickly enough, enabling the light horse regiments to gallop beneath their fire. Within an hour Beersheba was won, and most of the precious wells were saved. This victory was strategically important as it opened the way to the taking of Palestine and Jerusalem, thus changing the course of history in the Middle East. Of the 800 men and horses involved in this charge, 44 horses were killed, 32 horsemen died and 36 were injured. It was one of the last great cavalry charges in military history and one of the most successful https://hubs.ly/H0xfrXb0 The Australian Light Horse is an iconic part of our history. From the Boer War through World War One the Australina Light horse has taken its place in. We hope to keep their history and their story alive through our Light Horse inspired collections. Come and see our complete collection dedicated to the Australian Light horse and their mounts. #Beersheba #LightHorse #WW1 #WWI #GreatWar #AustralianLightHorse #Horse #History #historic #military #collection

02.01.2022 September 14 honours the contribution that Australian peacekeepers have made across the world in the service of peace. It was on this day in 1947 that Australian personnel were first deployed to monitor the ceasefire between Dutch and Indonesian forces, following a bloody war of independence. Since that day, Australian peacekeepers have been on continuous deployment with more than 50 peacekeeping missions around the world.
