25.01.2022 Will you take the pledge to #disruptyourfeed? This research from The Female Lead takes a dive into how we can build a more positive experience on social media. It's jam-packed full of many of the ideas I share in #DigitalNutrition. Full research paper here: https://www.thefemalelead.com/research

25.01.2022 3 podcast links, 2 blogs I've written, why you must watch The Hunting on SBS and the usual best reads and resources. You're welcome!

24.01.2022 Yes, a 16-year-old just won $3.4 million in the first Fortnite world championship. No, your kid is not going to stop going to school to try and be the next eSports star.

23.01.2022 Remember the Marshmellow Test? One of the most replicated psych experiments? Well celebrities have hijacked it and its not good. The issue is not just the 'test' (which sucks BTW) but of kids' rights in the digital space & the praising/shaming that comes with obsessively capturing & comparing them...I'd love to see parents more actively being stewards of their kids' privacy! My comments in Essential Baby

23.01.2022 I love Jordan Shapiro's book The New Childhood - now you can hear a summary of aspects of it in his new TEDx talk. It's time to get over our nostalgic sense of childhood, turning away from our kid's digital playgrounds is detrimental!

22.01.2022 Have you signed up to receive my monthly newsletter on the best stuff that catches my attention in the psychology x technology space? It's full of resources and ideas. I'd love it if you could subscribe, or share it with someone who might be interested!

22.01.2022 #DigitalNutrition gets a big shout-out here, as Jan Fran comes to grips with her tech habits in this ep of the Pineapple Project. #digitalwellbeing #screentime #bewellconnected

21.01.2022 It was lovely to chat to Alexx Stuart from Low Tox Life on how we can be savvier with the way we think about technology use and connect with our kids around their digital playground (ie: bring curiosity and park your judgy pants!). #digitalnutrition

20.01.2022 Do you feel like you never have enough time? Like your days just flitter by and you don't really know where they go? What you are probably experiencing is: TIME CONFETTI. This term totally resonates with me and has really shifted meout of doing sneaky multitasking - thanks behavioural scientist Ashley Whillans! I have been feeling increasingly stressed and in total time poverty recently. I have done a time budget and audited all the tasks I attempt to keep on top of ...while I run #DigitalNutrition and my psychology practice (basically solo). I realised I simply am in massive time debt AND when I do get a day to work on something my time gets blown up into a squillion little pieces which leaves me feeling really defeated. Time blocking is the new to-do list and while I totally know all about how to use a tonne of frameworks to prioritize my time and mobilise the right emotions for productivity, until I outsource and stop creating confetti I am simply going to fuel my stress. How do you find your time gets blitzed into confetti? What are your hacks for doing deep work and fighting distraction? #digitaldistraction #wordconfetti #timeblocking #digitalwellbeing #bewellconnected #timepoverty See more

19.01.2022 Nir Eyal's new book #Indistractable is out this week. I am quite obsessed with the model for building traction with the important stuff he outlines and was delighted that he invited me to write this post for Medium's OneZero.

19.01.2022 For every school that shows up in the media seeking praise for their (simplistic, unevaluated) smartphones bans - there are dozens who are working hard to come up with more meaningful and effective ways of dealing with digital distraction. I work with these schools to help create bespoke 'responsible use', intelligent and safe plans which are never phone-free-for-alls, but engage the student community in decision making and build change from foundations of fact, not fear. Get in touch if you want to be innovative, not tokenistic in your school. #aussieED #smartphonesinschools #phonebans (dont work).

19.01.2022 A bumper festive edition of my newsletter hit inboxes this arvo. Sign up and get a bunch of new resources for summer!

19.01.2022 I very specifically called my work Digital Nutrition to avoid the toxic-culture that goes with the ideas of dieting and detoxes. An app for kids (from 8yrs!) called 'Kurbo' from Weight Watchers that tracks eating and weight is the opposite of what we know about developing 'healthy' habits and what is likely to work in terms of positive self-esteem, body acceptance and all the other factors that are more important than kilos and BMI. Think about your own relationship with dieting and your body based on the messaging we've received, and let's not let our kids get caught up in the fantasy that an app will help teach the complex skills that develop radical things like self-love and body positivity!

19.01.2022 I see a surprising number of women not just overshare, but really inappropriately share their kid's lives on their businesses social media pages (usually in the stories). From labelling 'toddler = psycho' to capturing tantrums and shaming their choice of outfits (for not wanting to match with mummy, FFS). This article highlights some of the issues that come with this kind of 'sharenting' and the rights of children in the digital age. Importantly, young people are much more judicious with what and how they share than many of their attention/influence seeking parents!

19.01.2022 Got quezzies about screens and isolife? Send them in to the lovely folks at Australian Theatre for Young People (atyp) and I'll answer them in a webinar that's coming up!

18.01.2022 The kiwis have done it again. Brilliant, funny and honest ads about #esafety. I love how they empower parents to switch on their skills, not simply switch off the device. #keepitrealonline

17.01.2022 I love the new family technology resources for the early years that Office of the eSafety Commissioner has produced! Check them out (and wrangle you sharenting behaviours!) below.

17.01.2022 Did you know a 'smiling' chimp is actually stressed? In these visually busy times, perhaps pausing more frequently before you post could help reduce a range of harms...

17.01.2022 Be honest. Tiktok is a highly engaging and politicised platform. It's one that I really enjoy, but I am very careful about when I allow myself to dip into it, it's so quick and rewarding (and FASCINATING) I found myself losing hours to it! Unlike Instagram reels which is just a bunch of mummy bloggers pointing at the air and giving me tips on decluttering my pantry (because: damn algorithm). ... 15.01.2022 2 years ago I attended the inaugural @esafetyoffice conference. On day 1, I left my 5 month old in child care for more then 5 hours for the first time (I was still breastfeeding). On day 2 I sat up the back with her rolling around on the floor. This year shes happily off with her grandmother, thinks her etcha-sketch is an iPad and Im on a panel tmrw about the highs & lows of social media.... #esafety19 #digitalnutrition See more

15.01.2022 I wrote a piece for FOSI and managed to reference 'dunny' (and therefore Bluey)! It's about the disconnect between giving tech gifts and the social-emotional (not technical) skills we need to navigate online activities effectively. https://www.fosi.org//dont-forget-to-add-these-digital-wel

15.01.2022 Here's a little insight into why you feel so buggered from staring at people in videoconferencing tools all day long and how you can overcome fatigue. __ Spoiler: maybe your meeting should have been an email. And while yes, we want to find ways to connect and see each other (though some aspects of people's personal space/lives maybe not!), we might be overcompensating with too much video conferencing! __ Also please enjoy my brain fart at the 3min mark!... __ #digitalnutrition #cyberpsychology #zoomedout #zoommeetings #bradybunchmeetings #WFH #WFHlife #WTFWFH See more

15.01.2022 Do you strive for 'balance' in your life but find it hard to achieve? Me too, that's because it's impossible! Read why I call BS on seeking balance and what to seek instead. #BalanceisBS #worklifebalance

15.01.2022 It's a relative no-brainer - but invalidating young people's online worlds can significantly erode trust and connection. 14.01.2022 I love discussing cyberpsychology with podcasters, its a great format to share my passion for helping people develop more empowered, conscious relationships with technology and online consumption habits. Here's a conversation I had on The Look Up Podcast with Marc Weinstein. Other eps feature some of my fave ppl like Nir Eyal and Douglas Rushkoff.

12.01.2022 Now that I am not doing as much presenting/speaking work, I've added additional hours to my psychology practice, where I work with adolescents, adults and families. Yes, I am still doing F2F sessions as well as telehealth (phone/video) appointments. Read more about my services and current reduced fees below.

08.01.2022 As the world waits in limbo to see what kind of tantrums Trump throws, here's a reminder that you have a choice as to whether you feed the fears and uncertainty or amplify the facts and the less-headline grabbing good news. 07.01.2022 On Monday I'll be joining @abctv’s #qanda panel that will focus on the broad and complex issues raised (albeit in a pretty melodramatic, wonky way) in the @netflix docu-drama #thesocialdilemma. There will be a prerecorded interview with @tristanharris, and @sally_rugg_, @marcfennell, @julieinmangrant from the @esafetyoffice and the blokes from @theinspiredunemployed will contribute to what’s shaping up to be a pretty lively discussion. Tune in (and tweet along, oh the irony!) from 9:35pm AEST.

07.01.2022 If you read one thing about the last decade in tech may it be Rushkoff... #teamhuman

06.01.2022 I put some lippy and heels on to talk to a very dear friend for her new business supporting women entrepreneurs with gorgeous content - if you wondered how I went from being a pretty mediocre school student to cyberpsychology researcher, juggling two little businesses with motherhood and being a full-time human, have a read!

05.01.2022 Here's some quick tips on managing screen use, and going beyond screen 'time' that I shared with Teachers Health.

04.01.2022 I recorded this as COVID19 lockdowns started rolling out and we realised the significance of what the world was facing.

04.01.2022 Again, I humbly encourage parents to check themselves when it comes to how they share their kids online. Sickness, childcare details, tantrums and emotional outbursts should be off limits. Need support during these times or keen to share your feels - phone a friend, like an actual real human person you care about.

03.01.2022 I've been teaching my almost 3-year-old to play 'Spotto' in the car. It might be something you and your family can adopt if you're on car trips (in order to keep kids off screens for long periods and generally get them noticing the world going by)? I've extended the traditional 'call out SPOTTO when you see a yellow car' game to include green cars (FROGGO!) and orange cars (OGGO!) in order to mix it up a bit! I think I need to add purple cars too, but what should be ...call out for purple?! __ #parenting #digitalparenting #parentinghacks #summerholidays #roadtrip #roadtripgames #cargames #screenfree #unplugged #unpluggedchildhoods #summervacation #travelgram #vacation #outdoors #instagood #travelroadtrip See more

01.01.2022 I'm not suggesting you play a small game, or dont seek positive change - but anchoring it to a new decade (without doing the work and prep that authentic and lasting change requires) is possibly setting yourself up for failure! __ At the turn of the last decade you probably were only just putting your toe in the water of social media. Now most of us are neck-deep and competing with all the inspo BS that infects most platforms. __ Sure, do some reflecting (I love Susannah... Conway's Unravel Your Year), create some intentions (couple them with strategies and supports that will help you achieve them) and kick-arse in 2020... __ Notice the energy or desire you might have to change aspects of your life (is it coming from a place of what you 'should' do?), and consider how you might maintain this over the course of a year (affirmations, regular reflections & accountability check-ins are great). __ Remember you can make a commitment to authentic change on any day of the year, you don't need to anchor it to Jan 1, 2020... __ #intentions #NYR #2020 #2020goals #authenticity #cuttheBS # #newyearnewyou #newyearsameyou #youdontneedfixing #newyearnewme #newdecadeyoulldo #newyearresolution #newhabits #wellness #newyeargoals #healthychanges #newyearsresolution #freshstart #changetoday #anyday #starttoday See more

01.01.2022 Next time you revisit your false, overly nostalgic memories of growing up before screens colonised our lives - keep these stats in mind.

01.01.2022 There are still some spots available for this FREE seminar tmrw/Sept 5 in Parramatta.

01.01.2022 Here's a chatter I had with myself the other day about video conferencing fatigue. Do you feel it?
