12.01.2022 As part of celebrating NAIDOC Week, our incoming school captains, Jack Kalms and Macey Laverty, held a WebEx Assembly and shared with the school a speech about NAIDOC. During the assembly, Harper Harradine also introduced a music clip, The Children Came Back, by artist Adam Briggs, which was played in each year level. *** Address given by Jack and Macey *** We would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the Land on which we meet and learn, the Wotjobaluk, Jaad...wa, Jadwadjali, Wergaia and Jupagalk people. We acknowledge their stories, traditions and culture, and wish to pay our respects to their Elders - past, present and in the future. This week is NAIDOC week. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to come together to pay their respects to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander’s. The purpose of this event is to celebrate the true history of this country- a history which dates back thousands of generations, and also acknowledge and embrace the diverse cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander’s as they are oldest continuing cultures on the planet. The acronym NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. The theme for NAIDOC Week 2020 is 'Always Was, Always Will Be', recognising the First Nations peoples who have resided and cared for this land for over 65,000 years, and are the oldest living cultures on earth. We acknowledge and express our appreciation to the First Nations peoples for being Australia’s first explorers, our first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first artists, etc. on the land. We must all reflect on and remind ourselves of the First Nations peoples efforts and ongoing contribution to our country and society. *** Video introduction given by Harper Harradine *** The clip we are about to play is called The Children Came Back, by hip-hop artist Adam Briggs. He decided to write this song as the sequel to Archie Roach’s landmark 1990 song, Took the Children Away, which is about the Stolen Generations. Roach and Briggs are both proud Victorian Aboriginal men. While Roach’s song portrays what happened to families after their children were taken, the Briggs’ clip is a celebration of Indigenous heroes. It is a song of empowerment and refers to some famous Australians, including Adam Goodes, Cathy Freeman, Patty Mills and Gavin Wanganeen.
