23.01.2022 Fish and chip Friday. What's your favourite fish and chip shop - and why? I'm biased, but we definitely have the best fish and chips in Melbourne. ... Tonight At The Catch Carnegie in Carnegie, but some of my other go-to locals are Oakleigh Fish 'N Chippery, and Murrumbeena's Blue Sea Fish and Chips Take Away and Rio's. All excellent. Enjoy the weekend sunshine, but do stay safe and wear a mask. We are so close now.
23.01.2022 When a system is broken - it must be rebuilt. We will. Victoria's Mental Health System. Today, at Melbourne's Exhibition Building, the Royal Commission handed down its recommendations.... We will adopt every single one of them. 2 years of work, thousands of people sharing experiences - their own, and on behalf of those no longer with us. Too many people have felt the loneliness, the isolation and the helplessness when they tried to get help. For far too many years. This suffering has been exposed. Rebuilding won't be easy. But it has to be done. Now is the time. For mental health support, please reach out: Beyond Blue: 1300 22 46 36 Lifeline: 13 11 14 Neami - 1300 185 399 Clayton Community Mental Health Service: 1300 369 012 Headspace Bentleigh: 9076 9400
23.01.2022 "The first step in solving any problem is recognising there is one." Mental Health. We have a problem. It's our job to solve it. We promised a Royal Commission. Now we will accept every one of their recommendations. ... What we do on this matters. To people and to families. This is what government is about. Making change that makes a real difference to people's lives.
23.01.2022 It's international women's day - a day to celebrate the social, cultural, political and economic achievements of women. Remembering that there was a time not too long ago that women did not have the right to vote, women were not allowed to be in certain professions or could not get a home loan in their own name. Unbelievable but true. Why are we still marking International Women's Day? Because there is still such a long way to go. If the last two weeks has not demonstrated th...at, then I don't know what will. One in three women have experienced sexual harassment in their workplace, many women still get paid less than a man doing the exact same job, too many women are still harmed or killed by a male partner, ex-partner or stranger - I could go on. Real equality. Real respect. Still not here. Unacceptable. Let's really confront this. Have a read of this story.
21.01.2022 Dean Jones. A Victorian and Australian legend. Vale.
21.01.2022 This is a first for Australia. It’s going to happen right here in Victoria. The Australian Institute for Infectious Disease. We will build it. And this will be world leading. ... Over the last year you will have seen some of the work done by the best infectious disease specialists in the world like at Harvard University, Oxford University and John Hopkins University. But so much has been done here too. We have some of the best experts and researchers in the world. In so many ways, we are already world leading. But this new Institute for Infectious Disease will be another level. We will be at the epicentre of national and international research. This is not just about Covid. This is about all infectious diseases and being prepared to deal with what comes next. We will get this done in collaboration with the University of Melbourne, the Burnet Institute, the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research, the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, CSL and the Doherty Institute. All up it’s a $550 million investment. $155 million from the Victorian Government. $150 million from the University of Melbourne and their partners. And because this will be our national institute, we are seeking the remainder of funding from the Federal Government.
21.01.2022 In the last 2 months, nurses and key personnel from Victoria’s hospitals have stepped in to help staff privately run aged care. When the outbreaks started, many of these private aged care facilities struggled to maintain staffing levels and standards of care. So far, teams from Victoria’s hospitals have worked 4,680 shifts across private aged care. ... While Victorian Government owned and run aged care has seen just 15 cases of coronavirus since January, there have been over 4,000 cases at private and privately owned facilities. These private facilities are both the not for profit sector and businesses that run aged care homes for a profit. To ensure oversight and proper care, our nurses and staff have stepped up to do the job. This has been an amazing effort at short notice, to protect the most vulnerable in our community. There are many excellent privately run aged care facilities but far too many poorly run ones. We should never have such a disparity in cases between Victorian government run age care facilities and privately run ones. On behalf of our community, thank you to the nurses and staff from Victoria's hospitals who have gone into private aged care facilities to help.
20.01.2022 Sometimes this emoji goes unrecognised. But sometimes it really hits the mark. More care and less negativity - never a bad thing.

20.01.2022 Our National Capital. I just love this. This is NAIDOC Week. A week where we celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The first people to set foot in this country. Custodians for over 65,000 years.... Beautiful words from NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee): Always Was, Always Will Be. Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. We are spiritually and culturally connected to this country. This country was criss-crossed by generations of brilliant Nations. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. Australia has the world’s oldest oral stories. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies. We built and engineered structures - structures on Earth - predating well-known sites such as the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge. Our adaptation and intimate knowledge of Country enabled us to endure climate change, catastrophic droughts and rising sea levels. Always Was, Always Will Be. acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and our cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future. Through ingenious land management systems like fire stick farming we transformed the harshest habitable continent into a land of bounty. NAIDOC Week 2020 acknowledges and celebrates that our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact whether in 1770 or 1606 - with the arrival of the Dutch on the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula. The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples. Our coastal Nations watched and interacted with at least 36 contacts made by Europeans prior to 1770. Many of them resulting in the charting of the northern, western and southern coastlines of our lands and our waters. For us, this nation’s story began at the dawn of time. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and to recognise that our sovereignty was never ceded. Always Was, Always Will Be. National NAIDOC
19.01.2022 14. Well done Melbourne.

18.01.2022 We’re building 12,000 more social and public housing homes. A $5.3 billion investment. The biggest ever. Thousands of new jobs. 7 star energy efficiency in every home. A new place to live for our most vulnerable. That’s it. Have a nice evening.
16.01.2022 Every single day that Dan has been up there - so have the Auslan interpreters. In every crisis, this amazing team of people are there. In this the National Week of Deaf People, but every day, and in every crisis, we thank you.
15.01.2022 My home office. Local catch ups and meetings on Zoom, Teams and phone calls - it’s mostly from right here. Not being able to get out and about including for work has been a big change for all of us.... But with the case numbers coming right down, we are getting closer every day to going back to the things we enjoy. Remember, if you do work from home, make sure you take a break every now and again. Don’t stay behind a computer all day. As always, if you need any assistance we are still available, via phone or email.
15.01.2022 It’s a growing school around 500 students up from 315, just 6 years ago. Oakleigh Primary School and Kindergarten The Stage 1 Upgrade was completed this year including a new gym and renovated main building. ... Now it’s time for stage 2. This week, we’ve allocated a further $4 million to get this done. And we’ve already upgraded the kinder here too. All up, this is around a $13.3 million investment in Oakleigh Primary in just the last 3 years. My enormous thanks to Principal Michele, the school council and all the staff, parents and kids here you have been amazing advocates for our community. And a special shout out as well to former Principal Jack Fisher who always had such vision for this school. Photo taken pre pandemic
15.01.2022 When the global pandemic broke out, the Federal Government introduced JobKeeper to replace the wages of staff and many sole traders who had been affected by the economic impacts of the virus. This is part of the Federal Government’s job of providing income support and a social safety net when people need it. There are reductions and changes to these payments starting today, so if you are currently receiving JobKeeper please visit the Federal Government’s www.ato.gov.au to un...derstand what these changes and reduction may mean for you. A reduction in the payment of JobSeeker occurred on Friday 25 September. For further information on this payment, visit the Federal Government's www.servicesaustralia.gov.au In Victoria, we’ve been doing what we can to support as many businesses as possible to get to the other side of this pandemic. That’s not to say this is easy. For so many businesses, it isn’t. I understand that. We will continue to do more. So far, the Victorian Government has provided around $6 billion in support for business since March including significant direct grants and tax relief. It’s the largest support package this state has ever seen. The most important thing for business is to ensure that we get to the other side of this pandemic and can reopen. Safely and with confidence. With case numbers continuing to decline, right now, the strategy is working. We can’t do it alone though and support from the Federal Government and local councils is crucial to helping people and families get through to the other side. For further information on the support available for businesses, including around 33,000 sole traders, please visit www.business.vic.gov.au

14.01.2022 So this is how you announce a massive $9.9 million upgrade to a local school in 2020. Socially distanced and direct from parliament on budget day. Yes, that’s me taking a photo of my screen on a zoom call. South Oakleigh College. A well deserved and much needed upgrade is coming, included for a bigger gym and a refurbished science block.... This school gets better every year, due in no small part to the fantastic staff. So many local schools have been upgraded in the last few years, this is another one that Meng Heang Tak MP and I have been quietly working on. To say that we're very pleased with this outcome would be a massive understatement. Well done to all at the school for your work on this you have been incredible.
13.01.2022 Today, we released the first step in the recovery of our economy and our community. The Victorian Budget. Simply we are investing in people. All the activity and construction you’ve seen over last 6 years will now be even bigger. Much bigger. ... Over the next 2 years you will see the largest ever investment in the social and economic prosperity of all Victorians. And this will mean jobs. 400,000 by 2025 and half of those by 2022. Schools, rail and road projects, energy efficiency and protection of our environment. And much more. This includes the first ever Australian Institute of Infectious diseases, the Suburban Rail Loop with new stations at Clayton and Monash Uni, more solar panels and batteries, huge investment in mental health and public housing and many more local school upgrades. You will see a lot more information in coming days and weeks. And a lot more activity coming very soon.
12.01.2022 Scouts. Be Prepared. Always good advice. Presentation night of the Glen Eira Stonnington Scouts. Well done on another successful year, despite the circumstances. ... And thank you for what your do every year for our community. It makes a big difference, especially now. Here in Victoria - 17,000 Scouts, 5,000 adult volunteers. 47 million active Scouts around the world. Over 110 years later, still going strong. Scouts Victoria
12.01.2022 Question. Who can tell me where this is? This is one of many signal boxes all across Glen Eira that have been painted by local artists. A fantastic way to brighten up our the community. Love them!

10.01.2022 This night. 20 years ago. 400 Metres. Sydney Olympics. Our Cathy Freeman. Gold. A race which really did stop our nation. A moment when so many Australians watched our TVs so nervously. ... Where we were aching for her to succeed. And where we leapt out of our seats when our Cathy Freeman crossed the finish line first. Gold for Cathy. For Australia. For all of us. And weren't we so proud of her? We still are. She is truly a national treasure. One of those moments that we will never forget where we were when it happened. And something we will never get tired of reliving. Photo: ABC Australia
09.01.2022 We understand. We’ve heard you. We’re acting. Public Housing. This is life changing. We are making the biggest investment in public housing in our history. ... These are the things that make a difference. That make us a better society. Governments can be judged on their action on many things. Perhaps one of the most important is how government supports those who are our most vulnerable. This is most true for people who are in need of a roof over their head. Appropriate shelter is a human right. Too many have to live on the streets, on friend’s couches or in poor conditions, with excessive rent. We know that the Federal Government payments for those on a pension are often not enough. Too much of the pension goes on private rent, leaving very little for all the other basics of life, including health care. Over the last few years, Victoria has made some big investments in public housing. That said, we still need to do more. We know this is not an easy task. For too long, the demand for public housing has been too high, and supply just does not go close to meeting that. Now, we will do more. A lot of work has been done in this space to start to solve this problem. And not just this year when people have been at their most vulnerable. Personally, I want to say that I’ve heard so many of your voices on this, on this Facebook page, but in so many conversations too. Many of the stories are heartbreaking. While you might not always hear about what’s quietly happening, please know, that your words, your contribution to this has mattered. It mattered to me and it matters to our government. This isn’t cheap, but unless we get started soon, this problem will get beyond us. And this is not a quick fix. There is a lot of work ahead. I believe wholeheartedly that this is the right thing to do. As a society we have to do more to look after our most vulnerable. This is one of those things.

Construction starts early next year. :) This is going to be amazing, not just for the clubs, but for all the community.
07.01.2022 Tonight. Both houses of the Victorian Parliament have now voted to ban dangerous conversion therapy. The new laws will outlaw practices that attempt to change or suppress a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.... I know some people have different views about this. But one simple message these practices have harmed too many people and they should have been banned long ago.
04.01.2022 Get those daily steps up. Run, jog, walk. Even more important these days. It always helps when it’s sunny.
03.01.2022 A titan, a giant, a legend, an icon. To me, Michael Gudinski was a friend. And I want to tell you about the remarkable life he led.... From dance halls to Festival Hall, music was the very fabric of his being. He left school as a young kid to put on gigs, manage bands and do what he loved in the city he adored. Michael single-handedly turned the 'backyard business' of Australian music into an industry, creating and nurturing some of the world's biggest acts. From Skyhooks, Split Enz, Kylie Minogue and Archie Roach to Jimmy Barnes, Adalita, Yothu Yindi, Christine Anu and Vance Joy the list never ends. Even if you've never heard of him you've listened to a Mushroom album, you've gone to a Frontier tour, you've fallen in love with a band he discovered, or a song he helped produce. He created the biggest stage Australia's ever seen and through it a platform for local talent to thrive and shine. But the greatest show of all was Michael himself. Larger than life, and a leader in every sense he built an empire over 50 years that catapulted Australian music and culture forward, and we all owe him a great gratitude for it. Even during the worst of the pandemic, when live music took its biggest hit Michael didn't stop. From The State of Music, to Music from the Home Front and Sounds Better Together he brought both headline acts, and budding local artists into the lounge rooms and screens of thousands of Victorian homes. He was a force, and he cared about his industry and all those who formed it from the roadies, truck drivers, riggers and sparkies to the designers, caterers, artists and everyone in between. But more than that, Michael was a mate. Over the past few years we'd frequently speak late into the night. Never about politics, but music, and vinyl, and anything else. He was a great Victorian, and a treasured friend. And it's his enormous contribution, to the city he loved, that we'll be honouring and celebrating with a state memorial in the near future. Because there are few people who've shaped our state like Michael, much less leave a legacy as lasting as his. He'll be missed, there's no doubt. But he'll be heard for generations to come.
03.01.2022 Staying local? Discover Local. :) Murrumbeena Wine Bar. Bring your friends. Like I did with this guy from Bentleigh - Nick Staikos MP.... Good wine - of course - but much more. Enjoy the weekend.
03.01.2022 National Police Remembrance Day 2020 For all those who have given their life in the line of duty, protecting us. We thank you. Today and every day.
03.01.2022 It might not have been the normal way to make a major announcement, but this worked so well. $440,000 from the Victorian Government to the Sri Venkata Krishna Brundavana Melbourne Temple in Murrumbeena for major upgrades. This is such a well-deserved grant to an organisation that does so much for the local Indian community. ... A pleasure to welcome Minister Ros Spence MP to our community (virtually) to make this fantastic announcement. And hopefully very soon we can be down to see you all again in person. The funding is sourced from the Indian Community Infrastructure Fund which supports Indian communities across Victoria to maintain, upgrade, renovate and construct community facilities that celebrate, preserve and share their culture and traditions.
02.01.2022 Quick update 12 new cases today. The 14 day rolling average for Melbourne is 26.7. There are 532 active cases in Victoria, which is down from 7,877 in mid-August.... In Monash there are 2 active cases and just the 1 in Glen Eira. Right now, we are beating this. Well done. And thank you.
02.01.2022 That's 14 days of 0 cases. Just 3 active cases across all Victoria. For those who have been following the rolling 14 day average closely I obviously don't need to say this. But I will anyway: 14 days of 0 cases = 14 day average 0 cases.
