25.01.2022 ANNOUNCEMENT 2 - INTRODUCING NINA! We are so excited to have Nina join our team to assist with walking. Nina has a background of working with dogs in a council role and also an extensive history of training horses. Over the past couple of weeks, Nina has been joining me on my walks and getting to know all the beautiful dogs we work with. Here, she is meeting the beautiful Bear and Marley. They usually take a while to warm up to new people but took to Nina very quickly! She c...ertainly has a knack with animals. Nina is also our newest member of the Pawtastic Paws team and will be completing her Certificate III in Dog Behaviour and Training later in the year.

24.01.2022 3 new parks have been proposed for the Geelong region including one on the southern Bellarine

24.01.2022 Last night we had the absolute privilege of attending Pro Dog Training’s Loose Leash Masterclass workshop run by Brad Griggs from Canine Services International.... This was a great opportunity for us to learn from the best of the best in the industry about how to master the art of loose leash walking. This is one of the most common training challenges clients come to us so we’re looking forward to putting our learning into practice and sharing knowledge about how to achieve results with your dogs. We’re so lucky to have trainers like Brad willing to share their knowledge and help us be better trainers. Classes are on this morning and we’re raring to go after our awesome workshop last night!

23.01.2022 Exciting news, we have added an extra beginners class on Mondays at 4.45-5.45pm! This means we have also freed up some spots for our 6-7pm beginners tonight. If you would like to join us, drop us a line or send us message to book

22.01.2022 Some great advice about some of the common pitfalls when training your puppies. Its incredibly important to take your puppies to a good quality puppy pre-school (I recommend Bellarine Vet) and to continue their training for their first year at least.

19.01.2022 Happy Birthday to my little Fox! Thank you for your affectionate kisses and for making us laugh with your cheeky antics. Your quirky ways have made me the trainer I am today and I am so grateful to have found you.

19.01.2022 ANNOUNCEMENT 1 - INTRODUCING DINGO & FOX! These past couple of months I have been fairly quiet on this page. While regular services have continued, behind the scenes I have been working on our brand new image. It was high time to officially include the two dogs that have had the most influence over my life (and training).... Bobby (the "Dingo"), is my hard working kelpie boy. He will come along with me to help me out while working with other dogs on walks and in class. Being an ex-farm dog, hes not afraid of working until the job is done (sometimes taking on herding work even when not asked to!). At home, however, he has definitely settle into domestic life. His favourite pasttime is finding the comfiest spot to have a snooze. Every trainer will tell you about the dog that changed their life. For me, this has been Lou Lou (my "Fox). The challenges I have faced in training this highly intelligent, independent and anxious dog led me down the path of learning more and more about dog behaviour and how to fine tune my training methods. She has taught me the most important values in training - patience, persistence, empathy and motivation. I am so excited and proud to be including these two wonderful dogs in my brand. Thank you for your patience as this transition occurs and I hope you enjoy the new look!

19.01.2022 With all these thunderstorms around, this post is a timely reminder that you can help your dog get through them with calm and confident patting & reassurance

12.01.2022 EFFECTIVE USE OF TREATS IN TRAINING Id like to address the myth that using food to train is just stuffing food down the dogs throat as a bribe. It is impo...rtant to understand the difference in the phases of training. The use of high value rewards help dogs learn and build confidence. Its important to tell your dog when theyre doing the right thing a marker word can help you get your timing right You have 1/2-1 sec to mark a behaviour When we start teaching our dog something new, we have a much higher rate of reward Once the dog understands the command we can start to randomise giving treats (intermittent rewarding) Make sure your training does not become a bribe

10.01.2022 What a fantastic article shared by @cherished pets The understanding of dog behaviour has changed incredibly over the past 20 years. The trainers I admire most in this field are the ones who have kept up their learning and adapted their skills based on scientific evidence. This doesnt mean dogs dont have structures or boundaries - dogs thrive under conditions where they have clear rules and patterns they can follow. The fundamental difference is that we teach our dogs how to succeed & build their confidence, rather than expecting them to submit and be punished without being shown what we want from them.

07.01.2022 What a month! Its been a fabulous rollercoaster of a month with lots going on (so apologies for the delay in posting photos of all your wonderful pooches) Highlights: - enjoying the beautiful warmer weather with all the dogs - meeting the beautiful Max the Bichon x Poodle & his beautiful sisters... - attending a conference in Bendigo on canine behaviour - attending a Pet first aid course in Melbourne Lowlights: - breaking a finger (ouch!) - ending the month with a cold November is already looking to be an absolute cracker. Looking forward to getting out and about with my canine friends

04.01.2022 I am so incredibly proud of Peanut and her wonderful owners for all the hard work they have put in this year. Peanut regularly comes along to our Pawfect Paws classes and she and her mum have been working incredibly hard at reducing her reactivity around other dogs. Today it definitely paid off! We were giving a wide berth to a large dog approx 20m away when it decided to bound over and get in Peanuts face to say hello. Peanut was polite for around 30 seconds before finally..., appropriately growling to ask the rude dog to move away (which thankfully it did). She then calmly continued on as if nothing had happened. This is an amazing effort from Peanut just going to show that persistence, consistency and hard work can make such a difference

04.01.2022 While earlier this week I needed to use first aid on myself (some quick thinking minimized the damage to my finger), today was all about how to administer effective first aid to our pets. Hopefully Ill never have to use todays training, but Im ready for action should something go wrong. Thanks Djindi for being a very chilled out patient today

04.01.2022 SATURDAY CLASSES CANCELLED Due to the extremely hot weather expected tomorrow, we have decided to cancel our regular Saturday classes. While the Hall usually gi...ves us relief from the heat, 3 days of over 35 is definitely too extreme! Please keep yourselves and your pets in the cool and ensure there is plenty of water available at all times. We will be back to our regular schedule on Monday

04.01.2022 Some great advice! If you ensure a dog sees a behaviour as enjoyable, you will have a much more reliable response in the long term

03.01.2022 Were back online! Stay tuned for some exciting announcements coming soon

02.01.2022 Happy gotcha day to this special boy! 2 years ago today we decided to head up to the other side of Melbourne to see a rescue about a dog. Im so glad we came home with this beautiful dork. Bobby has taught me so much about channeling that working dog drive while still understanding that even hard working dogs can have an underlying soft nature.... A huge thank you to Forever Friends Animal Rescue for saving this boy and giving us the privilege of giving him a second chance

02.01.2022 Bobby & Lou joined Mosby on his walk today. Mosby has been walking with the wonderful Nina recently and was very excited to show off his training to his friends. They were very excited to see him and impressed by Mosbys improved focus and confidence
