What is the cause? The presence of cancer and/or side effect from cancer surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy lead to the increased of consumption or poor absorption of nutrients. Self-restriction to diet due to the disease What is sarcopenia? The loss of lean muscle mass and strength due to cancer-related malnutrition, change of metabolism, inflammation in the body system. Sarcopenia can affect normal physical function and activities of daily living. The inactivity can then lead to cardiac and lungs problems, and high risk of falls in elderly. What is the treatment? Assessment for Cancer-related malnutrition and sarcopenia is essential. This can be done by accredited practising dietitian, accredited exercise physiologist, physiotherapist or medical professional. Adequate nutritional intake and exercise participation (aerobic and resistance) aim to improve lean muscle mass and function. Cancer patients who are at high risk can be referred by our GI surgeons to Prehabiliation Program at Concord Hospital. It is a program designed for cancer patients which is currently under investigation of the benefit on improving patients’ nutritional status and physical function prior to their surgery and chemoradiotherapy.
