19.01.2022 Would you know what to do if your baby was choking? In our Baby Basic Life Support Class, we can teach you how to manage a baby who is choking- and it is NOT with the Heimlich manoeuvre! Babies have a narrow entrance to their windpipe (airway), which makes it easy for a small object to become caught in their airway. Babies also don't get their rear molar teeth (which we use for chewing) until 12-18 months of age, so they are not able to chew food effectively. And of course, babies and toddlers put everything into their mouth. All of these objects pose a choking hazard for a baby.

13.01.2022 I often get asked about the use of pillows to prevent flat heads in newborns. Firstly, babies should NOT have a pillow under their head before 2 years of age. Use of any product under baby’s head can tip their chin toward onto their chest, which can obstruct their breathing. Tummy time is the way to prevent flat heads and improve neck strength. And tummy time can be commenced at birth! See this great guide from Red Nose about the importance of tummy time and how to start age appropriate tummy time for your baby.

12.01.2022 I am so excited to announce the launch of my new series of online learning for parents and grandparents caring for newborn babies. The first series contains four videos: 1. Management of choking In addition, this package contain quizzes to check your learning and additional reading and resources. Suitable for parents expecting a baby, and for parents, grandparents and carers of babies from birth up to one year. https://preciouscare-baby-first-aid-training.thinkific.com/

07.01.2022 For the past year, I’ve been working with a fabulous team of clinicians and a mum of a baby born at 25 weeks to develop the first ever guidance for Victorian clinicians and parents for the management of extremely preterm births at 22-25 weeks. Please review our draft guidance and give us your feedback- it’s so important we get this right. Our feedback survey is open for 4 weeks. Parents, clinicians, researchers and consumers are all invited to provide us with feedback on our draft guidance.

05.01.2022 STUDY RECRUITING ! Do you have a baby born in June-August 2020 and are living in Australia or know someone who does? This study will help researchers inform how we can provide families with clear instructions that are adequate to record videos suitable for healthcare providers.
