25.01.2022 Spring Chickens ~ Introducing Poultry to Your Brood Given the amount of people in Victoria using their time in lockdown to invest in a poultry set up, we thought it was the perfect time to chat about all things chickens! Chickens can make excellent pets, and if you haven’t already, are well worth looking into if you are considering adding a few new additions to your family. Not only will chooks earn their keep by offering you regular, organic eggs, they’ll also help to keep... your kitchen scrap waste to a minimum and their droppings make for excellent garden and compost fertiliser. Keeping chickens can be a relatively inexpensive and easy way to dip your toe into the poultry world, however as always, knowing what to expect and being prepared will always pay off in the long run. http://directvetservices.com.au/spring-chickens-introducin/

25.01.2022 Canine Coronavirus (CCV)? What is it and what can we do? Firstly, Canine Coronavirus has nothing to do with Covid-19. We have had many concerned clients querying about the risk of Corona from pets.... So, let’s clear things up a bit http://directvetservices.com.au/canine-coronavirus-ccv-wha/

24.01.2022 We've loved having your support over the last several months ~ we really couldn't have come through this smiling without you

22.01.2022 What a ride! 10 years, from a dream, a shell, a desire, the support of the most amazing people you could ever hope to call friends. IT’S DIRECT VETS 10th BIRTHDAY. We have seen many changes over the years. We started with 1 vet and 2 nurses (Emma and Amanda), and now have a cast of 7 (Drs Karen, Sarah, Rachel and Nurses Alicia, Karen, Kim and Heidi) with 9 student nurses undertaking their training with us in 2020. The team will grow again in 2021 and I hope the new kids on ...the block understand the amazing team they are joining. We have undergone training and renovations building skills and facilities. There have been other vets Nic, Phan Geetha and Amanda, supported by Nurses Alice, Kate Jo, Briar, Jimmy, Charlotte and Phoebe along the journey, many of whom completed their studies with DVS. We have brought new life into the world 3 sons for Dr Phan, 2 for Dr Nic, a daughter for nurse Emma, a daughter for Dr Sarah and grandkids for Dr Karen and nurse Karen. How bloody cool is that! But most of all we have added all of YOU to our family. Direct Vet has the most amazing clients. 10 years has gone so fast, we have gained a few wrinkles and a few grey hairs and every one of them more than worth it. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DVS See more

21.01.2022 Hold your breath a sec folks while we work out what the new Covid restrictions mean. Vets ARE ESSENTIAL right after bottle shops but above florists (go figure). You can all still attend your up coming appointments. If you can please give us a call from your car when you arrive. ... Latest AVA advice is we are to go contactless again. We will have a cage bank and leads etc outside for you to place your pets in safely. ALL cats must be in a carrier, even in that cage bank. ALL dogs must be on a leash, even in the cage bank. Place your pet in the crate when we ask you to and return to your car. Please do not hang about the cages or we can not come out to retrieve them. If there is someone already there please be patient. This system works, we did it for months last time. The only exception will be for families that have to say goodbye to their family member. A limit of 2 will be allowed in wearing masks and maintaining social distancing. Rest assured though we will absolutely be here for you We got this AGAIN. Let’s hope we are all back to normal by Thursday.

20.01.2022 COVID UPDATE - we are free...... well sort of. When visiting us you must do the following please. For in clinic visits masks are mandatory once you step outside the car and into the clinic (unless you have a medical exemption and this must be provided). stop at the door a d either scan the QR code and show the staff member your green tick when you step up to reception. OR fill in the day sheet with your details. Use sanitizer as provided. ... One person only is permitted in the clinic with the attending pets, no matter how many pets you bring. Please let us know if you need a hand. Maintain safe social distancing at All times. If you can it would really help if you can use the online booking system to cut down our phone time, as this takes our nursing time away from the patients. PLEASE REMEMBER ONE PET ONE APPOINTMENT. Don’t book fluffy and Bella and Rocky in for the same appointment. We need the time to examine your pets to provide the care they need. if you need medications please call ahead and allow 24 hours for the vets to find the time they need to access your file, assess durability of repeats or whether we need to see you again, and then get the medication sorted. We are so busy as the only clinic we know of taking on patients that can’t be seen at their usual vets. Don’t give our nurses grief if we need to see you, we must comply with Vet Board prescribing guidelines. Telemedicine and Phone consults are still available for suitable cases if you would rather see us from home. loving having you all back again.

19.01.2022 2020 has certainly been a challenging year and for many, the challenges continue. This is particularly true at Direct Vets. As many of you are aware, our workload has exploded and doing our best, to help as many patients as we can, often stretches our resources AND ourselves. In 2014 I asked you all to support my business and staff while I took the time to get well after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Well the BASTARD is back and I am asking again for your support. I hav...e the most amazing team that shows up for me and you every day. They put their hearts and sanity on the line for you and your pets. Never more so than with the challenges we have faced through COVID and now my situation will take this to the next level. Trying to find another vet at such short notice is proving almost impossible. There have been clinics looking for over a year. So I need to ask all of our fur families to be there for the DVS Team. Please be patient and tolerant in terms of when we can fit you in. If it’s routine or not urgent, please be prepared to book a few days in advance-be patient. If your pet is sick we will try to fit you in. If your pet is really sick and we recommend an emergency service it’s because they need more intensive care than we can provide in that moment. We don’t make these decisions lightly, we do it because we care. So please continue to support my colleagues and myself in the months ahead. I will be away from the clinic for a couple of months at this stage. Yeah OK I’m already trying to figure out which cases I can do over Zoom from my hospital bed to lighten the workload. Please don’t abandon us if we cannot meet your appointment expectations there and then know that we will be doing our best. Please continue to support us as we have supported you and your pets over the years past and will continue to do in the years to come. I know I can ask this as you have always been part of my family and always had my back as I have had yours. I am getting my trusted medical team back together for my medical care and will be back stronger than ever. And as it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and this was picked up on a routine annual exam, one word of advice get your arses off the couch, stop delaying your follow up appointment for yourselves, make that call and give yourselves the best opportunity to be your best. To those smarty pants clients and friends that can join the dots and already figured this out. I love that you know me so well. Now let’s get this shit sorted and hope the hospital doesn’t try and feed me Macaroni Cheese with peas this time. What the hell is with that anyway? Love always. Karen. See more

16.01.2022 Before lockdown a day out with the Centre of my universe. As a person of science and logic and not a particularly emotional person, I can not fathom how the attachment I have for Super Dooper Teddy Monster has developed. The support he doesn’t even know he provides is infinite. I know many if you get it. Never been more important than now with this latest cancer hiccup Sympathy to my Dyson that is now picking up more of my hair than the dogs as we approach round 2 of chemo this week. Who is your bestie and why? How do they help you with your every day? I think if you stop and take the time you’ll surprise yourself with the impact that our pets have in our lives.

15.01.2022 After a stressful day yesterday and an extremely busy one today when we didn’t even know if we were going to get a chance to have lunch some of our amazing clients surprise us out of the blue with a subway platter! Thank you so much, means so much to us all that our clients like to look after us as much as we love to look after there pets!

14.01.2022 Today is World Kindness Day! After the crazy year we've had in Victoria this year, why not inject a little kindness into someone's day x You could ~... Offer to walk your neighbours dog Leave water outside for native birds and wildlife Donate pet food or blankets to your local rescue shelter Volunteer for a few hours at your local pound Or drop off a strong flat white to your favourite Vet (hahaha, kidding!) Make today great with a random act of kindness x https://worldkindnessaustralia.org

14.01.2022 Could today get any more challenging? After the truck accident at lunch with DVS staff and an amazing community and emergency services legends supporting those concerned (including poor Mindy the lab) we have now lost power/phones etc. We have phones diverted so you can still get a hold of us. Oh and Mindy the lab despite being in the damaged car is doing OK. The awesome fire team cranked open the back of the car. She is bruised but fortunately minimal injuries at this stage. Her handler Chris we hope is also OK. After a brief stay with us Mindy is being cared for by the team at Ravenhall that she works for. Power and phones back

14.01.2022 Did you know that black cats are often the hardest rescued animals to re-home in Australia? Perhaps because they were once associated with witch craft and bad luck, these little beauties are often left behind in favour of cats with lighter fur If you are looking to adopt a friendly feline friend this Halloween consider sharing some good luck with a black cat at your local shelter

09.01.2022 If you've not yet been greeted at the DVS door by Noisy telling you to come on, come on, it really is just a matter of time Noisy is an Eclectus parrot who likes to loiter by reception to greet all of our guests and their pets. She is awesome at putting smiles on even the most stressed visitors, although her typing skills leave a lot to be desired

09.01.2022 Euthanasia ~ Helping children to say goodbye What can we adults do to help relieve the distress of a child saying goodbye to their pet, and how can we improve their understanding of the situation? http://directvetservices.com.au/euthanasia-helping-childre/

03.01.2022 Have you met Penny? Fostering Penny (our stunning clinic Golden Retriever) turned into a foster fail for Nurse Kim, and you will often see her in the clinic. Penny was born missing her right kidney, and both the ureters instead of emptying into the bladder, opened closer to the end of the system leaving her incontinent. Surgery to correct the issue was only partially successful and she wears a nappy to catch the drips. Penny is an amazing comfort dog for patients in the cl...inic for treatment and will often curl up next to them to lend support. We love you Penny!!

01.01.2022 When all you do is play with puppies all day. This beautiful little grey flying fox pup was found on the road and brought in by our amazing clients yesterday. At roughly 3 weeks old and a litte boy he would have lost his grip and fallen from mums chest mid-flight. Unfortunately he passed away from his injuries but we gave it a good try. It is common to find pups at this time of year. If you do find one please be extremely careful. They are very fragile and although extremely unlikely may have Lissavirus (a rabies type disease). Gently pick them up in a big towel or blanket, we are happy to take them in or if we are closed contact http://www.flybynight.org.au/
