20.01.2022 ALL-ACCESS PATH AT MIDDS TO BE IN PLACE ALL YEAR ROUND An all-access path being built on the sand at Albany's Middleton Beach will be a permanent fixture. It ...was originally publicised as a seasonal installation, but the City of Albany now says it's set to stay all year. News of the path's impending construction broke last week, after years of community calls. It'll provide a solid surface to assist wheeled vehicles including wheelchairs, prams and walkers to reach the water. Workers were seen at the beach installing the path this morning.

15.01.2022 PUSH TO MAKE ALBANY MORE WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE After losing his ability to walk last year, Albany man Bob Rees says he wants Albany to do more to assist peop...le living with a disability. Mr Rees relies on a wheelchair for mobility after a tragic motorcycle accident in Africa last year which his wife Chris did not survive, and in which he lost his ability to walk. He says his eyes are now open to the daily challenges facing people like himself who live with a disability, and he wants Albany to do better. "Sixteen months ago I was walking around like you and everybody else, and now I find myself in a wheelchair - and I find there's a lot of obstacles that wouldn't have crossed my mind before," he says. "For instance, the parking bays in Albany ... if there's a parking spot which is in town on Albany Highway or York Street and it opens onto the road, I can't use it. "I've been in town and haven't been able to find a parking spot, and have had to turn around and go home." He says petrol stations and public toilets are also a significant issue, with buttons and hand-drying facilities often too high for people in wheelchairs to reach. Even just getting into shops can be a daily problem. "I open [an automatic door], I try to go in and the door will bash into the side of me ... an $8000 wheelchair getting slaughtered," he says. "It can't be just me, it must be people pushing prams, somebody who's frail ... with a walking stick, how do they manage these doors? I just don't understand. He says the City of Albany has been "really receptive" to his suggestions, and he's hopeful it'll result in improvements around town.

07.01.2022 The Albany Ability Festival has been postponed until 2021. Whilst this was a difficult decision to make, it seemed best considering what has happened over the last five months. So - everyone has lots of time to get busy making items for the markets, practicing entertaining the crowds, and coming up with ideas for fun and engaging activities. Let's look at the positives

07.01.2022 Catches of the Day celebrated at the Jetty ALBANY’S Fishability group is hosting its Christmas windup in a few weeks’ time and is inviting everyone to come down and join in. Fishability is a seasonal group event that welcomes people living with a disability to visit Emu Point Boat Pens on Friday mornings and wet a line. The windup barbecue and award presentation will be held on December 18 on the lawn area opposite the Albany Sea Res...cue building. The usual 9-11.30am Friday fishing session will be held first, followed by lunch from 11.30am and presentations at 12.30pm. 05.01.2022 We were lucky enough to attend the PWDWA State Conference last week. Here we are talking about advocacy in the Aboriginal community.

05.01.2022 Today my husband and I with our two guide dogs had another near miss with an electric car. We were crossing a side road and it came in off the main road and pas...sed very close in front of us. If it’d been a petrol or diesel engine, or if it’d had a sound emitter fitted, we’d have heard it, but, apart from the sound of the tyres on the road, it was virtually silent. I am a confident guide dog handler but I can honestly say that silent electric vehicles scare me. I fear that it will take serious injury to a blind person, or even worse, death, before any meaningful legislation is put into place. If it happens to me or someone that I care about, I’ll be in court and I won’t rest until we have justice. So please, if you drive an electric vehicle, switch on your sound emitter. After all, you wouldn’t drive at night without your lights on, it’s the same thing. Many people will like this post but please don’t. I ask anyone who would have hit the like button to please hit the share button instead and pass this far and wide. I fear for our lives and those of these two amazing dogs.
