16.01.2022 Taking Back the Waves was a film made by Surf Life Saving NSW that documented some of the cool initiatives on inclusive beaches in Australia. Two years ago Mel Edwards, Hazel Maxwell, Barbara Almond and I completed a major study for Surf Life Saving NSW so inclusion and the beaches are now more centrally on the agenda. Sargood On Collaroy are doing great work in the space including surfing, scuba diving, fishing and just getting people engaged in outdoor water environments. ...Of course with greater participation thereIs an increased need for consumer spending by people with disabilities on beachwear, holidays and personal products, and the need for councils and Surf clubs to provide infrastructure and equipment, and increasing entrepreneurial activity that has seen Start-up companies develop to satisfy these needs including Push Mobility, The Good Scout Travel Co and others Participation by people with disabilities in any area of society is good for the individual and great for the community and the economy. 11.01.2022 While not mentioning disability, the implications of this study on unconscious bias training are obvious for all marginalised workers - don’t expect awareness training to improve our situations but it may placate the way feel that at least something is being done. This may entrench institutionalised bias by placing change on the shoulders of individuals rather than the organisation. It also does little to call out discrimination again leaving it to individuals to challenge the organisation on its discriminatory practices. But what happens to the whistle blowers? 06.01.2022 We all know that people past their mid 40s experience a great deal of discrimination in the workplace. This article examines the advantages of setting up your own consultancy if you have a solid background in an area and become your own boss through self-employment and entrepreneurship. All areas of marginality experience discrimination in the workplace. Taking control and working for yourself is one way to challenge these prejudices.
