22.01.2022 Reasons to never call me differently-abled: 1. Disability is not a bad word. 2. It assumes being disabled means unable.... 3. It reeks of abled-fragility. 4. I’m disabled. Differently-abled people aren’t a protected class under the law.

21.01.2022 Speaking out on ableism isn’t a us vs them attitude. It’s calling them in to have a better understanding of disability.

20.01.2022 VERY excited to finally share with you a project we’ve been working on for the last 12 months. We’re super proud to announce the upcoming launch of our new star...tup Able Foods. We started Able Foods with the goal of providing great quality food, as well as opportunities for people with disability to lead a healthier and happier life - right across Australia. That means a focus on hiring people with disability, championing disability and being disability voice led at every turn. We will be launching our range of fresh ready-made meals very soon, so if you or someone you care for is on the NDIS and are keen to hear more visit our website www.ablefoods.com.au to register your interest. Trust me, they are bloody delish! Also, keen for some honest feedback on the dirty mullet... #AbleFoods See more

17.01.2022 What's the hurry? The Minister for the NDIS wants to introduce independent assessments for people applying for the NDIS from February next year. Then from July ...next year independent assessments will be required for existing NDIS participants at plan reviews. They will start with people at important life transition points like leaving school or moving out of home. Then gradually they will be introduced for everyone. This is the biggest change to the NDIS since the scheme started in 2013. But it is being introduced in a big hurry - without any explanation why. It is also being introduced without any consultation with the people who matter most - people with disability and their families. We've heard all your questions about independent assessments. Now it's time the Minister heard them too. But we know how much everyone has on their plate at the moment. So we have an easy to use form on our website for you to have your say. You can send the email we have prepared - or you can add your own. Either way it's important that the Minister hears from as many people as possible. You can find the email to the Minister here - https://everyaustraliancounts.com.au/questions-for-ministe/ You can read our summary of what is being introduced here - https://everyaustraliancounts.com.au/testing-times-in-the-/ And you can read what the Minister had to say on the weekend in the media here - https://www.theage.com.au//government-appoints-independent #NDISMakeItWork (Image description: A picture of a red and white old fashioned alarm clock. 16.01.2022 Sadly 2020 has become the year which disability has been thrown in the ignorance of political figures and so called celebrities. We’ll be talking this and more Monday from 12- 2pm on 104.7 and streaming at www.2bobradio.org.au

15.01.2022 The Disability Royal Commission is holding more hearings today. This week's hearings are looking at the use of drugs to control the behaviour of people with dis...ability. They are also looking at "behaviours of concern" - sometimes called challenging behaviours. This is likely to be yet another very upsetting week with some very disturbing stories and testimony by people with disability and their families. If you find yourself struggling please reach out for help - there are some numbers pinned to the top of this page which you might find helpful. If you would like to read more about the hearings or see the witness list for this week you can find it here - https://disability.royalcommission.gov.au//public-hearing-6 And you can watch the live stream of the hearings on the Royal Commission's website - https://disability.royalcommission.gov.au/ The hearings start at 10am today. Please look after yourselves (Image description: A photo from the last Disability Royal Commission hearings. Two Commissioners can be seen sitting at a podium at the front of the room. They have microphones in front of them. In front of the podium are rows of desks with computers sitting on them. Two people are sitting at the desks - they face the camera with their backs to the Commissioners. One is wearing headphones. Another woman stands in front of the Commissioners. She is facing them with her back to the camera. She is wearing a black and white dress with large flowers on it. She is looking off to the side.)

13.01.2022 Disabled people and carers were entirely left out of the Government's COVID stimulus package. These two payments exist in recognition that disabled people and ...carers have higher everyday costs and face significant barriers to entering the workforce. They've also experienced significant increased costs during this crisis. After rent, Mark is left with just $21 a day to pay for food, bills, transport, medical appointments and medication. sign the petition: https://greens.org.au/campaigns/disability-and-carers

13.01.2022 When learning about disability, trust and listen to actually disabled people. NOT people that work with disabled people. If I’m being honest, those people seem to carry a lot of disability entitlement with them and it is suspect as hell.

08.01.2022 Some more breaking news from the NDIS this afternoon ... The NDIA have released some more information today about the introduction of compulsory NDIS assessment...s. This afternoon they released more information about the first trial of the assessment process. And they have released some short information about six of the tools that will be used during the assessments. They have also announced that a second trial using these tools will start up again in October. This trial was cancelled earlier in the year as a result of COVID19. There is a bit to look at so we are still working our way through. In the meantime you can check it out by following the links below. You can read the media release here - https://www.ndis.gov.au//5355-assessment-tools-improve-con You can read more about the first assessment pilot here - https://www.ndis.gov.au//inde/independent-assessment-pilot And you can read about the tools that will be used to carry out the assessments here - https://www.ndis.gov.au//in/independent-assessment-toolkit The NDIA have also added some more questions and answers about the assessments. You can find them here - https://www.ndis.gov.au//inde/independent-assessment-q-and And don't forget you can still email the Minister and let him know what you think of the introduction of assessments. You can do that here - https://everyaustraliancounts.com.au/questions-for-ministe/ #NDISMakeItWork (Image description: A red rectangle with the words "Breaking News" in white capital letters. 07.01.2022 Soooooo not a fan of the way the media went about this

07.01.2022 Everybody deserves the freedom of choice to enable them to thrive in their roles. Can #FlexibleWork close the #disability #employment gap? https://www.managers.org.uk//can-flexible-work-close-the-d #inclusion

05.01.2022 Some breaking news from the NDIA this afternoon ... The NDIA have just released the Functional Capacity Assessment Framework (phew that's a mouthful). This long... document gives some information about why the NDIA think independent assessments are a good idea. It also explains a little bit more about how and why they have selected the assessment tools they have. It is rather ironically titled - given that the NDIA have said the assessments won't just be about function. And yet that's what the framework is called? The NDIA says the framework has been developed with researchers, academics and allied health professionals. But not, as far as we are aware, with input from people with disability or their families. This is a very technical document and quite hard to get through. There is no Easy Read or plain English version available. So it's going to take us a while. We will of course let you know what we find. We know many of you have so many questions and concerns about what independent assessments will mean for you. We share them - and we promise to keep taking them to the government and the NDIA. And that is not all we are doing - so stay tuned. In the meantime if you want to look at what has been released today you can find it on the NDIS website. But be warned because it is very hard going. You can read the media release here - https://www.ndis.gov.au//5260-ndia-releases-new-functional You can read the full framework here - https://www.ndis.gov.au//functional-capacity-assessment-fr The NDIA have also released some frequently asked questions about independent assessments. You can find them here - https://www.ndis.gov.au//inde/independent-assessment-q-and (Image description: A red rectangle with the words "Breaking News" in white capital letters. Underneath the words you can see the Every Australian Counts logo and the words "NDIS: Make It Work)

01.01.2022 When is a cage not a cage.? When it’s in, a segregated school for students with disabilities. In these situations, the euphemisms are trotted out thick and fas...t to trick parents into thinking that their children are not being treated like animals when they actually are. This is Eastern Ranges which has a long history of locking children in padded cells and bathrooms in response to behaviours of concern because they don’t have the competence to do anything otherwise. This is the sort of area that student with disabilities are shoved in with the imprimatur of Minister James Molino and Secretary Jenny Atta. Can you imagine a mainstream school locking children in these areas? What would the response be?
