08.01.2022 Disaster Relief Australia is proud to announce our second DRA Guest Speaker of the 2020 Series. Following the success of Disaster Relief Australia's first speaker session we are excited to announce our next event to be held on Thursday the 17th of September 2020 at 1900 AEST. For this session we will be joined by Nick Garland, a former British army officer who served with the Queen's Dragoon Guards, including on three tours of Helmand Province, Afghanistan. On his first tou...r in 2009 Nick was badly wounded by a rocket propelled grenade, having to be resuscitated in the medivac helicopter as a result of losing six pints (for us Aussies, that's 3.4L - which is around half your circulating volume!) of blood, which was followed by almost a month in a coma. Following a number of surgeries and extensive rehabilitation he rejoined his unit, and within two years was back in Afghanistan leading soldiers of the Brigade Reconnaissance Force on combat operations, for which he was honoured by being Mentioned in Dispatches for gallantry and leadership. Following being medically discharged in 2018 as a result of his injuries, Nick has spoken extensively on resilience and recovery, both mental and physical, and the impact of trauma. This session will be hosted by our National Director of DRTs, Richard Adams who had the honour to serve alongside Nick on his second tour of Helmand Province in 2011/12, and who got to witness his resilience, gallantry and leadership first hand. Please register to listen to his incredible story of confronting and overcoming adversity. If you have a question for Nick, you can also submit that when you register. A Zoom link will be emailed to you at least 48 hours before the session commences. http://bit.ly/GuestSpeakerNickGarland

07.01.2022 Volunteering in her community during and after the Adelaide Hills bushfires, and now nationally with Disaster Relief Australia means an enormous amount to Jodie Turpin, who can’t explain the reward you get from helping others. Disaster Relief Australia are proud to see Jodie’s efforts supporting her community recover from the devastating Cudlee Creek Fires recognised with the prestigious South Australian "Premier’s Certificate of Recognition for outstanding volunteer serv...ice". Jodie is also a Tea Tree Plaza Westfield Local Heroes finalist (to be announced 27 October 2020), with $10,000 to the Lobethal Bushfire Recovery Fund if her nomination is successful. Jodie, and all Disaster Relief Australia volunteers dig deep to give the community a hand up and help residents with the many jobs that are too big for people to tackle on their own. Operation Hannaford logged 10,056 volunteer work hours, saving the community $520,348, but the road to recovery is a long one. Disaster Relief Australia recently returned to the Adelaide Hills, with 28 volunteers from Adelaide Disaster Relief Team providing a further 722 hours of manual labour, reassurance and hope, saving the community $46,300. In her volunteer role as National Logistics Associate (Procurement), Jodie continues to work tirelessly to ensure all Disaster Relief Teams are kitted out, and ready to deploy for the next emergency. More hands, heads and hearts are always needed. Volunteering with Disaster Relief Australia is not easy. You’ll dig deep, get dirty, and work hard. You’ll be challenged. If you’re up for that, submit your EOI here https://disasterreliefaus.org/volunteer/

04.01.2022 This morning local NSW Batlow residents, Linda and Matt from The 'new' Batlow Hotel were interviewed on the TODAY Show after they were recognised by Matthew McConaughey as local legends. Why are they legends? Because as last summer’s Black Summer bushfires raged down and their local community evacuated, Linda and Matt stayed behind as the town was evacuated to defend their livelihood and to provide support to firefighters. Over the past 5 weeks members of DRA have been back i...n Batlow working in the community as part of our continued bushfire recovery efforts. It is communities such as these that we are raising funds to help as part of our #GivingTuesday Appeal. The donations we receive, and support pledged allows us to purchase equipment and fund the behind the scenes logistics and operations to do the work we do assisting Australian communities devastated by disaster. Thank you also to Linda and Matt for housing, feeding and hydrating our members while we have been in the Batlow area over the past few weeks. It is legends such as you who help our people on the ground in the work they do assisting these communities. To show your support as part of our Giving Tuesday Appeal on 1 December 2020 visit: https://disasterreliefaus.org/giving-tuesday #givingtuesday #disasterreliefaustralia #builttoserve
