18.01.2022 Robert Spencer makes an important point when he suggests that "Flexibility may be something we do, rather than something we have. Stiffness may be something we do, rather than something we are." In his short talk, "Stiffness", you will learn how to hinge forward at the hip joints, instead of your waist. By doing so, youll bring your hands closer to the floor more easily: https://youtu.be/-3CoWNLQ8FE

17.01.2022 Washington Post reporter, Lisa Rein, recently shared her story of using the Feldenkrais Method to self-manage chronic neck and back pain...

16.01.2022 I closed my in-person Awareness Through Movement classes last week. As you know, the status of the coronavirus (COVID-19) spread is changing rapidly. Cases of COVID-19 in Australia are yet to peak and we are on an upward curve. What happens in terms of community spread of the virus going forward depends on what each of us does to help slow its spread. One step we can all take to reduce contact between people is to decrease the social activities that we normally go to. This i...s especially important for those of us aged 60+ years, if we care for older relatives, and/or if we have, or someone close to us has, a chronic medical condition or compromised immune system. I believe that regular Awareness Through Movement practice has a lot to offer for our self-care. So Im tinkering with getting online classes underway and will let you know when available. Take care and stay safe Judith See more

14.01.2022 Probably not smart to go for brisk early morning walk in a smoke haze. Joggers pounding past me werent the only ones breathing heavily. I too was breathing in and out through my mouth. This was new to me I dont usually worry about breathing when I walk. So I focused on breathing in through my nose instead. After all, my nose is there to clean, warm and humidify the air that I breathe. Letting it do its job made my breathing easier. I didnt try to change anything else about my breathing after that but simply observed it. How fast? How deep? Was my in-breathe longer or shorter than my out-breath? Did I pause after breathing in, after breathing out, or both? And then I noticed the stillness and quiet of the park...

13.01.2022 Im very pleased to announce that Ill be offering face-to-face small group Awareness Through Movement classes once again from mid-July. Join me then to cultivate self-awareness for making movement possible, easier, and more comfortable. Judith

12.01.2022 To improve our movement requires mindful learning to sense and explore new options and let go of unhelpful habits. Do you agree?

11.01.2022 As we continue to process the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, it's helpful to set aside time each day to relax our stressed bodies and minds. Relaxation is a state of profound rest the opposite of stress. One relaxation technique is progressive relaxation. Set aside 10 minutes at the start and end of each day for progressive relaxation to gain the most benefit. Here's a brief guide to download.

10.01.2022 In Awareness Through Movement, "Learning is the kind of process where you learn to do the thing you can do in a different way, so that your choice is increased" (Moshe Feldenkrais, 1984, The Master Moves). Having more options helps make our lives a little easier. For example, it lets us more readily adapt our movement to suit our environment. The way we learn in lessons, though, can be quite different to the way we previously learnt to do things. I recently shared two blogs by Larry Goldfarb PhD on this topic of learning in Awareness Through Movement lessons that are equally applicable in our everyday life. Heres a checklist distilling that information for quick and easy reference...

07.01.2022 Are you wondering if Awareness Through Movement classes are right for you?

07.01.2022 We finished 2019 with "Time For You" a series of gentle lessons targeting those places we tend to hold or store stress in our bodies. One site we explored was the neck. If there are times when your neck feels tense or your shoulders seem to have crept up closer to your ears, then this short audio lesson might be helpful. It is based on Ruthy Alons "Self-treatment for the Neck" (11:20): https://youtu.be/mBcnpQkhEoM

06.01.2022 On more than one occasion, Moshe Feldenkrais said, "I am not here to tell you what to do; I am here only to show you that you should know what you are doing" (The Elusive Obvious). He considered helping us to learn the very foundation for good "mind-and-body" health (The Potent Self). But how best to approach learning in an Awareness Through Movement lesson and then retain the new options for movement and posture that we've learnt? That's the conundrum that movement scientist and certified Feldenkrais trainer, Larry Goldfarb PhD, addressed in his recent blog "What you take with you", shared with permission (CC BY-SA 4.0).

06.01.2022 Moshe Feldenkrais considered helping us to learn as the foundation for good mind-body health.

05.01.2022 My in-person Awareness Through Movement classes re-start tomorrow. Looking forward to catching up with my regular clients since the shutdown and a few newcomers. Two spots are still available Tuesday evenings. Rather than let the floor go unused, message me for a special offer: m.me/discovermovementFeldenkrais Or email: [email protected]

04.01.2022 Becoming aware of our habits of posture, movement, and our thinking, even, helps make our everyday movements easier.

04.01.2022 Standing up from a chair with less effort is more about moving forward and less about pushing up as Robert Spencer shows: https://youtu.be/cDURAYq15CI

03.01.2022 The National Prescribing Service (NPS) MedicineWise recommends the Feldenkrais Method as a physical technique to help manage chronic pain: https://www.nps.org.au/consumers/chronic-pain-explained Indeed, you can incorporate the practice in your self-management strategies to improve the quality and ease of movements and come to do everyday activities more comfortably. Thanks Justine Reilly for sharing this link.

03.01.2022 "It's a direction, not a destination" Learning to recognise our habits and patterns and learning to discover new options flows from the Feldenkrais Method into our everyday lives if we're open to it. "It's a direction, not a destination," he would say perhaps echoing humanist psychologist Carl Rogers, a contemporary of Moshe Feldenkrais. 03.01.2022 Evidence shows that walking has many health benefits and low risk of injury. You might know that walking is good for your heart but thats not all... Heres four lesser-known benefits for women, in particular. Keep on walking
