22.01.2022 Managing Laminitis Laminitis is a painful and debilitating problem which can have long term crippling effects in horses and ponies. As an owner of an ‘good doer...’, ‘cresty’ horse, or a horse which is sensitive to laminitis, it is important to ensure that you plan and adopt an effective management and feeding plan to help reduce the risk of laminitis. The management goals in preventing feed related ‘founder’ are most commonly implemented from the start of spring or following late summer rain, when rapidly growing plants are likely to provide high amounts of soluble sugars and NSCs. However, it is important to remember that laminitis can occur at any time of the year. Restricting the grazing hours of your horse is an extremely effective management tool. Studies show that in horses and ponies susceptible to sugar-induced laminitis, grazing should be restricted to 1 hours early to mid-morning (from 6.00 am to 10 am) and again for a short time of a maximum of 1 hour in the mid to late afternoon. Sugars in the grass will peak during sunny days and be at their highest during the late morning to mid-afternoon period and these accumulated levels also extend into the early evening and until after midnight. Another effective way to reduce sugar intake in horses and ponies which are overweight or ‘cresty’, susceptible to laminitis or suffer from EMS or IR, is to soak some or all of the hay they consume daily. The ideal method for soaking hay is to soak in double its volume of luke-warm water for 30 minutes. Soaking for periods longer than 60 minutes removes very few additional sugars, increases microbial growth and leaches out water soluble trace-minerals and vitamins. After soaking the hay, drain and air dry for 10 15 minutes before feeding. The addition of Kohnke’s Own TRIM to your horse’s diet can also help with the management of laminitis. TRIM provides a range of important nutrients including magnesium, organic chromium, choline and manganese to support metabolic function and the metabolism of fats, helping to trim down those overweight, ‘cresty’ and sugar sensitive horses and ponies. When it comes to your horse’s health, prevention is always better than cure. Good management practices in conjunction with a well-balanced diet, are essential to help maintain your horse’s health. 13.01.2022 How does Your Horse Feel on Redi-Flex? Has your horse tried Kohnke’s Own NEW joint supplement Redi-Flex? With a super targeted, concentrated and comprehensive ...formulation, combined with premium-sourced nutrients to benefit total joint health, there is no question that Redi-Flex is the most comprehensive joint formula available today! The results speak for themselves We are just wrapped with the result- it has done a fantastic job of helping my horse’s joint wear. Better than any other joint supplement I’ve tried!, Margaret A., NSW I just wanted to say a massive thank you! I had a meeting with Dr. Kohnke and he suggested I try Redi-Flex on my old eventer. He has been on it for about 4 weeks now and he is feeling amazing. He is more inclined to go forward, less jarring on the ground and much friskier in the paddock! I am so grateful. After Adelaide last year I didn’t think I had too many events left on him, but things are looking a lot more positive now! Courtney S., NSW My riding pony was retired to the paddock but is now back doing a 2 hour hilly trial ride without a problem still felt fresh, sound and happy at the end of the ride! Wasn’t sore or stiff even the next day! Andie W., VIC I have a team of up and coming young eventing horses and there is nothing more important than protecting their longevity and competition career, that is why I choose Redi-Flex. Whilst they are currently young, fit and sound, I want to make sure I am providing them with the nutrients they need now to help ensure their joint health for years to come. Georgia L., NSW See how well your horse can move and feel on Redi-Flex: drop into any Kohnke’s Own stockist and request your first 1 kg and 3 kg pack or visit the Kohnke’s Own trade stand at the AUS Dressage Championships from the 17th 20th October for your Free Redi-Flex sample and showbag! 04.01.2022 The Danger of Dehydration Act Now Dehydration is a common problem in hard working horses, which describes the body’s inadequate content of water. Less common...ly known is that dehydration does not only refer to the body’s inadequacy of water, but also of salts, which are essential for body function. Providing supplements of sodium chloride (general) salt, as well as potassium and magnesium salts in the feed, helps to replace the electrolytes lost in sweat and stimulate the thirst response to encourage horses to drink. There are a multitude of electrolyte and salt mixes available, but Kohnke’s Own Cell-Salts is different. It is a salt mix formulated to correct low feed levels as well as salts lost in sweat after exercise. Cell-Salts is a concentrated mix of physiological salts, including higher levels of potassium and magnesium salts, in a special slow release formulation exclusive to Kohnke’s Own. Cell-Salts has an innovative formulation which sets it apart as a true feed salt balancer.
