25.01.2022 A life of contentment with moments of joy - ultimately it’s what we want. To feel a sense of peace. To accept our lives. Ourselves. To find happiness in day to day moments. To appreciate what we have. To find joy in people, other animals, connections, our environment, our bodies... I’m in the business of health. But if I’m honest - I’m really in the business of helping people find a path to contentment. Health happens to be a pathway. ... Health is so much bigger than just what we eat, how we move our bodies, sleep, alcohol etc etc.... It’s how we think, how we interact, how we treat ourselves. Having the right mindset is the basis of change, happiness, a life that you relish and cherish. Understand what’s holding you back, what propels you forward, and importantly, what helps you to just be..... I love my little girl. I’m always in the moment with her, and her joy buoys my spirits. I love the trees, ocean, birds, flowers, sky around me.. I love the people in my life. I’m so so grateful for them. My family. My friends. My colleagues. My clients. My acquaintances. I love being able to move my body, running, walking, building strength, picking up my daughter. I love being able to learn, read, have access to many sage people. I love what I have been able to experience in this life. What helps you to feel content in your life? I’d love to know.

24.01.2022 Pink salt is NOT healthier. My colleague Dr Flavia Fayet-Moore @drflavs and her team @nr_aus conducted self-funded research and their findings .... debunked another annoying myth this week. Rethink buying pink salt! Unless you want to risk heavy metals - one sample tested contained a frighteningly high lead content! Pink salt is often touted as having more minerals and is therefore better for you but the truth is the nutrient level is so low and too variable to actually m...ake a significant contribution to the diet. And many samples contain a wide variation of harmful heavy metals. Swipe left to read the infographics summing up the findings. Overall try to use less salt by using herbs, spices, seaweed or other flavours. And if and when you do use a little salt, make it an iodised one - iodine is one mineral many of us are short on. #rethinkpink #pinksalt #saltresearch #himalayansalt #nutritionmyths #dietitian #nutritionist #apd

23.01.2022 Do you love nuts but worry that they are energy dense? Kilojoules from nuts are different! Recent research suggests we may not actually absorb up to 30 per cent of the kilojoules in nuts. A series of studies, from the US Food and Drug Administration (USDA), looked at almonds, cashews, pistachios and walnuts, over a period of six years. The results suggest the average tree nut offers significantly less energy (or kilojoules) than what nutrition labels suggest. Studies also s...uggest that the more ‘intact’ nuts are, the less kilojoules we absorb from them. In an almond study, for example, less energy was available to the body after eating whole almonds, compared with almond butter. So, the form of nuts makes a difference. Despite their high content of healthy fats, nuts are not associated with weight gain. In fact, research shows the opposite those who eat nuts are less likely to be overweight. This is likely due to much of the fat in nuts being ‘trapped’ in the fibrous cell walls of the nut, meaning it’s not absorbed by the body. If you enjoy eating nuts, but worry about their energy content, these studies which suggest that up to around a third of the kilojoules in nuts is not absorbed is good news. 21.01.2022 Its heartbreaking what is happening to Australia, so much has been lost. Im devastated and angry as well. I cannot fathom that we still have climate deniers amongst us, especially leading our country. I am however proud and humbled by the support shown. I have hope we can join forces to put the many steps needed in place to prevent tragedies of this scale happening again. 16.01.2022 Votes are in - all a yes for the chocolate banana bread recipe (except my cheeky friend @miss.jacklyn who Im going to ignore). We know how easy homemade banana bread recipes are and this is no exception! Less than 5 minutes prep time and 50 minutes in a 180 degree oven. Its also a healthier take on store bought banana bread and chocolate cakes so win win Mash 3 overripe bananas in a large bowl, add in two whisked eggs, 1/3 cup of light flavour extra virgin olive oil, mix, and then add 2 cups of wholemeal spelt flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 2-3 tablespoons of cocoa and gently fold in. Pour into baking tin and then press as many Easter eggs as desired into the top! You can also add the chocolate eggs in earlier when mixing in. Bake. Then best eaten warm out of the oven but still delicious cold

16.01.2022 Love this post on supplements by @compeat_nutrition - check out their page for more info! #Repost You have asked how to share our current Insta Stories on all things BS Bunker-ing the crazy land of immune function marketing happening right now.... . So here we go - all videos placed in one little post, complete with an infographic to hopefully help show the if/why to supps - but none that are essential! . These are all what we would refer to as the sprinkles on the icing of the cake - the cake is limiting social contact to slow the spread and flatten the curve! . Research for most of these supps is LIMITED and has been done on URTIs (ie the common cold) - NOT on COVID-19. . So we DO NOT know how these supps interact or if they help with the virus. . Please take on any advice using the term boosting your immune system with a VERY strong filter. The immune system is boosted in times of illness, injury or allergy - not something you want to be doing! . What we do know: there is NO supplement that will prevent you contracting the virus. If there was, pretty sure it would be the @who spruiking it - not supplement companies, diet industry, health coaches or essential oil consultants! these nutrients are best taken in real food form - variety and diversity is your friend dont underestimate the impact of stress here - looking after yourself to reduce anxiety at this time is one of the BEST things you can do. hygiene of course - but not just hand hygiene, sleep hygiene is super important too! . Keep it simple and practice self isolation or social uncoupling where possible - share and tag away . #food #jerf #supplements #bs #realfood #variety #health #corona #coronavirus #foodsecurity #family #familyfood #nobs #washyourhands #hygiene See more

12.01.2022 Interviewed for the Sydney Morning Herald. Below are my thoughts on what self care actually is. Looking after our physical and mental health is one of the most important areas we can focus on for ourselves and our family.. but this does not include feeling bad about ourselves if we dont have perfect health behaviours. Looking after ourselves is eating foods we enjoy that provide our bodies with key nutrients that optimise our health and immune function. It is cooking with... loved ones and sharing nourishing meals. It is not feeling bad if we eat less nourishing food, like chocolate, chips, and ice-cream. Instead, it is enjoying those foods without guilt when we choose to eat them. Looking after ourselves is moving our bodies in ways that bring us joy, that help us to de-stress, support us to feel stronger with more energy, or perhaps connect us with others virtually or as a family. Exercise is crucial to maintaining physical and mental health, and the stronger and fitter we are, the more likely we are to be able to fight off illness and recover quicker. However it doesnt mean we have to push ourselves to do exercise we dont like, and its detrimental to our mental health to feel guilty if we dont work out every single day! In fact, just 30 minutes of moderate activity (such as a brisk walk) on most days, has been shown to be enough to support our immune system, as well as our mental and overall physical health. Looking after ourselves is being kind and forgiving to ourselves and others, it is being curious and mindful, self aware not self critical. It is taking the time to connect with our loved ones - if not in person, virtually. Or taking time out to read, meditate, or breathe some fresh air and feel the sun on our skin. Whats its not is expecting perfection from ourselves and others. This increases pressure and anxiety in an already stressful situation. Instead take some deep breaths, reflect on what went well today/yesterday, what is making you feel good, and what it will take to make the most of your life in this new uncertain normal. @ Sydney, Australia

11.01.2022 Strength training for women is so important, especially as we move into our 40s and beyond. It helps us maintain muscle mass, protects us from lifestyle related disease, helps to boost our metabolism (as it starts to slow down with age), improves insulin sensitivity, and makes us feel powerful If you are unsure what to do, seek the help of an exercise physiologist to help with a plan, program or set of exercises. 10.01.2022 Connection and collaboration. Despite the fact playing is more fun my daughter is helping me prepare dinner. I love that she already values supporting people, and the bonding feeling we both get when we help each other. Despite not wanting to pick the thyme leaves off the stems (and especially for a meal she doesn’t like) she is still doing it and not complaining. She is even smiling and making small talk with me whilst I‘m in the kitchen chopping the vegetables. ... There is also a couple of added bonuses - even though this meal is not a favourite I know she’ll still eat a small portion of it and happily discuss with me the flavour that the thyme gave to the vegetables and chicken. Through these kind of shared experiences it grows her connection to the meal, food and me #goodrelationshipwithfood #familyunit #kidscooking #vegetables #healthcoaching #collaboration #connection #teamwork #kidsnutrition #dietitian #dietitiansofinstagram #healthcoach #nutrition #kiddinners #mutualrespect

08.01.2022 Love this myth busting post by @the.guthealthdietitian! Yes yes yes! #Repost While gluten-containing foods can be a trigger for gut symptomsthese foods, particularly wholegrain varieties, are rich sources of dietary fibre - important for keeping our microbiota thriving. Gluten does not need to be excluded unless you are coeliac or have a wheat allergy.TIP: Gluten-associated symptoms can commonly stem from other fermentable ingredients rather than the gluten itself. ...Before eliminating foods on your own, be sure to speak to your GP or APD. . There is no scientific evidence to support the ability of bone broth to improve gut health. The basis of claims stem from its collagen and gelatine content, but even then, these components in isolation unfortunately have not been shown to improve the gut specifically. TIP: Focus on drinking 2-3L of waterper day, this will improve regularity and consistency. . There is very little evidence supporting supplements and their blanket claims to solve all things gut. While there are some exceptions to needing a (scientifically proven) probiotic, a lot that you see in the supermarket are not backed by evidence and are simply a scattergun marketing tool.TIP: The cheapest and easiest way to improve your gut health is by eating a variety of plants (30 per week is best). . Lactose (the natural sugar) found in dairy can cause symptoms in those that are sensitive but even then small servings can still be enjoyed. There is no evidence to suggest that dairy is inherently bad for the gut, in contrast fermented dairy in particular has been shown to have beneficial effects.TIP: If you enjoy dairy, include it. Try mixing things up with fermented products like yoghurt, cheese or kefir. If you think that dairy or lactose may be a trigger for you, be sure to work with an APD before excluding completely. . Your gut does not need to rest. If you have a sensitive gut, fasting can actually put added pressure on your gut, leading to symptoms as you will be eating larger volumes in a smaller window of time.TIP: Listen to your hunger queues and do what works for you! 05.01.2022 Love my vegetables! They make you feel so good, add texture, flavour, crunch and of course stacks of fibre and other nutrients. It’s National Nutrition Week and this year @nutritionaustralia are asking us to #Tryfor5 serves of vegetables per day. The recommendation is 5 for women and 6 for men per day (as a minimum). A simple way to get enough serves in is to aim for half your plate or bowl at two meals (ie. lunch and dinner). However a great idea is to add them in wherever... you can - at breaky (ie. wilted spinach, pan roasted tomatoes and mushrooms), or snack on carrots, capsicum, celery, grape tomatoes, beans, you name it! How do you get your veggies in?

02.01.2022 There is NOT more sugar in skim or low fat milk! Gosh I love this post by my dietitian friend and colleague Catherine @foodwatch. This is one of the most annoying myths I hear people say!! #Repost @foodwatch... I’m tired of being told (not even asked) that skim milk has more SUGAR than full-fat or whole milk. It’s just not true. So I did a comparison . Skim milk has had almost all its fat skimmed off, so it has fewer kilojoules or Calories Fat contributes the most kilojoules - double that of protein or the carb lactose (a natural sugar of milk). Its energy has dropped from 266 to only 147 kilojoules When you remove the fat from whole milk, you concentrate what remains. So the sugars go up from 4.8 to 4.9 per cent (hardly a lot), plus the protein, sodium and calcium go up slightly. In other words, if you start with 100 mLs of full-fat milk, then remove the 5 per cent fat to create a fat-free skim milk, you end up with only 95 mLs of final skim milk. That 95 mLs turned into a percentage (100% of 100 mLs) magnifies what is there. I guess skim milk sometimes tastes a little sweeter, but this is due to this higher content of natural milk sugar called lactose and also because the fat isn't there any more to round out the flavour. However, this doesn’t mean you’re consuming any added sugar. You’re not. I’m not here to defend any milk but my blood does rise to a boil when I hear something incorrect being spread. Please can we move on? Skim milk or any low-fat milk does NOT have more sugar than whole milk. Rant over. This post is not sponsored.
