20.01.2022 SORE FROM SITTING? Here are some simple tips for sitting postures Everyone spends considerable amount of time in sitting and most of us believe that sitting is a form of relaxation and that it does not cause any harm to the body. We always associate our back pain with standing but in fact, according to expert pressure on the vertebral disc is higher when sitting than when standing or lying down. Prevent back pain and other related pains with these tips for postures correctio...n. little change in your postures can give you lots of health benefits... The following tips will be useful for maintaining proper Sitting Postures to those who sit for longer period each day: ~Do not sit more than 20 minutes at a time ~While sitting keep changing the position of your legs to feet up, feet apart, feet together.etc ~Get up often from your sitting position even if it is only for a short duration of 5 to 10 minutes. ~If you work at a computer monitor or anything that you refer to often with your eyes, keep the machine straight ahead and at eye level. If your focal point lowers than this you may adopt the slumped forward posture which will increase disc pressure. ~The arrangement of your desk or should be such that your forearm rest on the desk and your elbow are at the 90 degree angle and close to your site. This will reduce the stress on the muscle. ~While selecting the chair see that is suits to your size and shape. The chair should be wide enough to keep your knees apart. Avoid keeping knees together for longer periods.Use a chair with and armrest as this reduces pressure on the disc. ~Sitting in a reclined position (120 degrees seems optimal) lowers disc pressure. So make sure your chair allows you to alternate position. ~Sitting on the front edge of the chair. Keeping the feet flat on the floor and having your supported by the desk or armrest, will facilitate you to maintain normal lumber curve and will lower inter-discal pressure. By keeping the pressure off, we can prevent reformative change in the disc. This can be archived by limiting the time spent in sitting as much as possible and by redesigning our sitting places. 18.01.2022 SHOCKWAVE THERAPY Extracorporeal Shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment that creates a series of low energy wave pulsations that are applied to an area through a person’s skin. WHAT DOES IT DO?... ESWT helps trigger the body’s natural healing process by increasing blood flow and metabolic activtiy, reduction in chronic inflammation, collagen production and reduction in calcium build up. Commonly used for the treatment of musculoskeletal issues involving connective tissues, such as ligaments and tendons, as well as for calcification, spurs and bursitis. There is a growing body of evidence that ESWT can also improve osteoarthritis pain through the reparative healing process. Patients often feel relief within the 1st or 2nd treatment depending on the severity of the condition. Being cost effective, non-invasive and with very limited side effects, Shockwave therapy is a great option for chronic pain where traditional treatments may not have been successful! Book an appointment with our Physiotherapist, Nathan on 0400 435 269 to discuss if this treatment is right for you!

13.01.2022 Suffering from DIZZINESS or VERTIGO? Our Senior Physiotherapist Nathan Smith can help! Vestibular physiotherapy can be a very good option for treating symptoms of dizziness and vertigo, especially if these symptoms are triggered or made worse by movement. In many cases, dizziness that is worse with movement is caused by a disorder involving the inner ear (vestibular) system. Research has shown that vestibular physiotherapy is highly effective in treating vestibular disorders..., such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), viral infection of the inner ear (vestibular neuritis) and vestibular migraine (a form of migraine that causes vertigo and dizziness with or without symptoms of headache). Your physiotherapist with specific skills in vestibular rehabilitation would conduct a comprehensive assessment of your dizziness and vertigo, and, in many cases, would be able to establish the cause for your symptoms. If unable to establish a cause for your symptoms, your physiotherapist would refer you to a medical specialist who would be able to order more extensive testing. Vestibular physiotherapy involves: - Habituation exercises: these exercises involve specific movements that are designed to gently stimulate the symptoms of dizziness in order to desensitise the vestibular system to those movements. They are designed to reduce symptoms of dizziness. - Eyehead coordination exercises: these exercises are designed to improve focus and reduce symptoms of dizziness. - Balance and gait exercises: these exercises involve challenging the vestibular balance system in order to strengthen it. They are designed to improve balance and confidence when walking. - Re-positioning techniques: these techniques are used for a specific inner ear (vestibular) condition known as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). This condition results in significant symptoms of vertigo when changing position, such as when lying down or rolling over in bed. Techniques such as the Epley manoeuvre can successfully treat BPPV but should be performed by your physiotherapist with specific skills in vestibular rehabilitation. 13.01.2022 Let’s talk trigger points! Trigger points are a common source of pain around the neck, shoulders, hips, and lower back. Also known as muscle knots, they can feel like hard, painful lumps. Stress, injury, overuse, or exertion of your muscles are general causes, often feeling like joint or nerve pain and likely causing discomfort in other areas due to the muscles becoming shorter and tighter.... HOW CAN PHYSIOTHERAPY HELP? There are many methods of treatment for these areas including dry needling, manual therapy, electric stimulation, and stretching/strengthening exercises. Our Physiotherapist, Nathan, can help identify causes such as poor training techniques, posture, and other potential strains on your muscles you might not even know your doing! If you have any questions about how trigger points might be affecting you, ask your Physiotherapist for more detailed information!

12.01.2022 What is Dry Needling..... Dry needling, also known as myofascial trigger point dry needling, is an alternative medicine technique similar to acupuncture. Dry needling is sometimes also known as intramuscular stimulation. It involves the use of either solid filiform needles or hollow-core hypodermic needles for therapy of muscle pain, including pain related to myofascial pain syndrome. Dry needling is mainly used to "treat" myofascial "trigger points", but it is also used to ..."target" connective tissue, neural ailments, and muscular ailments. The American Physical Therapy Association defines dry needling as a technique used to treat dysfunction of skeletal muscle and connective tissue, minimize peripheral nociception (pain), and improve or regulate structural or functional damage. Dry needling is available with our Senior Physiotherapist Nathan Smith and can be performed during a treatment appointment.
