18.01.2022 The fire season is here and we all want everyone to be safe. The fire ban season for the West Coast District commenced 1st November 2020 and will remain until 15th April 2021. Our district is no stranger to fires and summer months are of particular concern. Owners are reminded to make their properties fire safe, removing any fuel piles, long grass and cleaning out fire debris under trees. It is a requirement for allotments less than 0.5ha, that all fuel (grass & weeds) is cle...ared around houses and property to a maximum height of 10cm. For allotments greater than 0.5ha a 20m fuel reduction zone is required around homes and a 5m fuel reduction zone is required around sheds and other infrastructure as well as a property fire break of 4m around the boundaries. Head to the Council website for further fire prevention information, contact details of Fire Permit Officers and preparing for the fire danger season. Always have a plan in place should a fire occur. Please see the CFS website for information on how to create your bushfire survival plan www.cfs.sa.gov.au. See more

17.01.2022 Have you ever experienced a shock or tingling sensation while touching a kitchen or bathroom tap or an appliance like a kettle or toaster? It could be a sign that a property’s electrical system has a damaged earth connection, causing issues in the electricity supply and resulting in metal objects such as pipes, taps and appliances to become live with very low-level electricity. Left unattended, it may become a serious issue.
13.01.2022 We can’t say we’re disappointed the lock down has been cut short. Here’s a few ideas to keep the kids busy until Saturday midnight, when life resumes to some normality again.
11.01.2022 Kerbside collection will continue as usual during the 6 day lock down period for recycling and general waste bins. However, all of our waste transfer stations will be closed for the duration. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation
11.01.2022 REMEMBRANCE DAY 2020 Today is a day to remember all those that have served our country, and those that gave the ultimate sacrifice in defending our freedom for generations to come. Lest we forget
08.01.2022 A farewell was held for David and Julie Allchurch at the Elliston Community and Visitor Information Centre. Friends were able to join Dave and Jules to wish them all the best for their future adventures. The Allchurch’s have spent the last 25 years in the community of Elliston and have made life long friends along the way. Julie Holman and Mayor Malcolm Hancock gave speeches to a crowd of people (following COVID protocol). Many thanks to all who contributed to the organisation of the day.
08.01.2022 How's this for an ingenious idea? Lock farmer Leon Zacher needed a bit of help getting into the header for the 2020 harvest this year. Diagnosed with an inopera...ble brain tumour at the start of the COVID-19 restrictions here in Australia, Leon has been going through chemotherapy and a couple of rounds of radiation therapy and while he's doing okay so far, his family wanted to make sure he could get in for a few laps during harvest. So the family rigged up this safety cage on the front of their fork-lift and hoisted him up into the header safely. "Grandpa has been a farmer all his life - just like my dad," explained Bec Zacher. "Dad wanted desparately to get him in the header, but his walking is gone, so he rustled up a bit of a cage... and popped him into the header for potentially, that last header ride, so it's been a special week that's for sure," she said. Leon's grand-daughter Bec Zacher is now in quarantine after returning to her home in Western Australia, but she says, "seeing grandpa made it more than worth it". Good luck Leon and family x
08.01.2022 10 YEARS OF PROTECTION This plot of land at Elliston was fenced to keep stock from munching on the vegetation. Ten years later and the grasses and bushes a...re flourishing. The area has just been re-surveyed 10 years on as part of bushland biodiversity monitoring by the Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board and National Parks and Wildlife Service SA. Landscape Board's Andrew Freeman says she-oak trees are like chocolate for sheep, they love them, but keeping the area stock-free has led to a remarkable recovery that will bring bees and ecological benefits for the farmer.
