19.01.2022 Proposed Pedestrian Refuge Yankalilla Council has been asked by the Department of Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) to seek community feedback on DIT’s proposal for a pedestrian refuge located on Main South Road in front of the Yankalilla Foodland and Browse In and Save near Bungala Street, Yankalilla. In 2015 a petition was presented to the Minister for Road Safety for the installation of pedestrian lights in Yankalilla. Following a pedestrian and vehicle survey, DIT prov...ided Council with a concept plan for the installation of a pedestrian refuge together with the following clarifications: The survey indicated high pedestrian activity, however there wasn’t enough traffic to warrant a Pedestrian Actuated Crossing (PAC) (ie; pedestrian lights). Consequently, the department would not nominate a PAC for funding and even if nominated would certainly be a lower priority than many other sites across the State. As an alternative option and to improve pedestrian safety a refuge was also investigated. It was found that a refuge will deliver improved safety outcomes and will not affect street parking as much a PAC would, therefore less impact on businesses. 5-6 carparks will be lost, depending on the final detail design. (3-4 on the Browse In and Save side of the road and 2 on the Foodland / Bakery side). There is currently no funding for any work at this location. Prior to any funding bid being submitted for a refuge, consultation will need to be undertaken to determine the community and Council’s support for the project. Council staff have personally visited the business operators in the area to discuss the concept plan and get their feedback along with writing letters to all the affected property owners. We now want to hear from the general community, please tell us if you support DIT’s proposal for a pedestrian refuge in Yankalilla no later than Sunday 13 December 2020 via our survey online at https://www.yoursayyankalilla.com.au/pedestrian-refuge or by email to [email protected] or writing to us at PO Box 9 Yankalilla SA 5203. The feedback will be presented to Council’s Elected Members who will decide the recommendation that will go to the Department of Infrastructure and Transport whether there is or is not community support for installation of the proposed pedestrian refuge. 15.01.2022 Quick action from the Council team has seen the appropriate authorities attend the Bungala River to investigate an unidentified substance in the Bungala River and prior to their arrival stop the substance from reaching the estuary. Council received an initial notification from a resident today, that he had observed a thick white film on the Bungala River. Council’s Environmental Health Officer (EHO) and General Inspector immediately attended the scene where they could see t...he material on top of the water west of the Williss Drive Bridge and spread for approximately 500m. Thankfully the material did not contain a smell and had not reached the estuary. Council’s EHO called the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to report the incident. The EPA mobilised the MFS, CFS and Hazmat Team to come down to contain the unidentified material. While waiting for these services to arrive our quick-thinking staff called in assistance from our Operational Works Manager, Damien Cross who promptly built a temporary floating boom from material at our depot and installed it to prevent the material moving towards the estuary. The EPA will contain the unidentified material, test samples and investigate where it came from. Protecting and caring for our pristine environment is a priority for Council and our Community, we will endeavour to keep you informed and provide an update when we receive information from the EPA.

06.01.2022 Virtual awards still as sweet for Yankalilla! The District Council of Yankalilla are proud to have been recognised in the national 2020 International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) Australasia Core Values Awards for the category of 'Planning Project Award' for their project Nature's Best, Let's Plan the Rest. The 2020 Core Values Awards winners were announced during our Virtual Gala Awards Celebration this week with the District Council of Yankalilla being recog...nised as First Highly Commended for their project Nature's Best, Let's Plan The Rest. The IAP2 Australasia Core Values Awards recognise and encourage projects and organisations that are at the forefront of public participation. The awards were created to encourage excellence, quality, and innovation in public participation. Mayor Glen Rowlands reports that the District Council of Yankalilla team were the only finalist from a regional area and the only finalist from South Australia. This is our first submission and we’re thrilled to be recognised first as a finalist then runner up nationally for using our extensive, innovative tools and techniques to successfully and actively engage over ten per cent of our diverse and dispersed community in strategic planning for the future, within a modest budget said Mayor Rowlands. We attribute our success to strong community buy-in through adopting an outreach approach, intensive hands-on work from everyone including myself as Mayor with our CEO, Nigel Morris, leading and owning the process, combined with integrated use of traditional, face-to-face and online tools to achieve robust outcomes with and for our community. The now nationally recognised strategic plan sets out our ten-year vision and four-year focus based on what we heard from the community. The plan will be used to target grant funding and populate our Annual Business Plan and Budget. Leading Community Engagement expert Becky Hirst who was instrumental as the external consultant engaged in Phase One of the project, spending countless hours leading, coordinating, innovating, consulting and listening to the conversations with the Community to produce the 300+ page document What we Heard to assist in determining the direct the Community would like to take for the next ten years said of Council’s plan You should definitely be really proud of this entire process. We’re punching above our weight, and in good company with other finalists being announced as the City of South Perth, City of Sydney & the Department of Transport (Victoria), just to name a few. The City of Sydney went on to win the overall award for which we congratulate them and aspire to our Council achieving in coming years said Mayor Rowlands. Due to COVID our recognition was announced and celebrated virtually which was different but still so rewarding for our hard-working team and great community said Mayor Rowlands.
