05.01.2022 hing. Spending all day studying the behavior of sharks in their natural environment I am in a position to observe and then test things that might be very usefu...l for people to be aware of as we hope to further our understanding of sharks and how to more safely coexist. Something I’ve always been fascinated about is the sensitivity of sharks to splashing on the surface and what that might mean for surfers, swimmers, and snorkelers. In this clip I purposely splash while swimming away from a Tiger shark (everything we teach people not to do if they see a shark and here you can see why.) Now generally the moment I stop splashing and face the shark it turns off however sometimes their momentum forward carries them towards me and its good to know how to deter a shark, something I go into detail about in my book What you should know about sharks. Generally facing and extending fins or other objects towards a shark is enough to deter them, however with some larger species occasionally I will have to redirect, or physically deter them and its generally a very gentle redirection but its critical that I place my hand on top of the sharks head (not on the underside of the snout,) lock my elbow, and push down and off to the side, moving myself out of their way if anything.
