25.01.2022 Cherie and I were exploring the drop off along Wakatobi Resort's spectacular home reef wall at night. We were using specially developed fluoro lights which reveal nothing in the dark except marine life that fluoresces, so we are almost diving blind until something does fluoresce. Fortunately many of the corals fluoresce which provides a little orientation. Perfect buoyancy control, fluidity, navigation skill and 100% sheer confidence in your ability to survive in the dark, 20... meters underwater takes care of the rest. We were pioneers of the theory that more than just corals would exhibit fluorescence! Suddenly out of the dark briefly appeared this moray, fluorescing brilliantly. Vindication for our efforts, as long as I can get the picture! Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel. See more
25.01.2022 The Power of the Tiger Only when you are up close and at ground level do you see the true power of the tiger. A great regal head armed with fangs. A broad chest of muscle. And massive forearms with paws able to deliver a blow that no prey can survive.... The ultimate combination of Fur, Fang and Claw. At rest, a combination of beauty and quiet power as yet, unleashed. 25.01.2022 In a race to the finish line this Sweetlip is in front of the Wrasse by a head! Darn, I had bet all my money on the Wrasse. Not really, I just had to bring some humour to my instagram. Us photographers can't always take ourselves too seriously, where is the fun in that! Actually the Cleaner Wrasse won!... The Sweetlip pulled up just short of the finish line! It was in need of some serious cleaning Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel. See more
25.01.2022 Three months ago to the day, I photographed and published on my instagram this two week old baby swan (Cygnet) with its mother. It gave me such joy to return and see it as a three month old Juvenile already learning to stretch its wings, preen and bathe, emulating everything it has learned from its parents. In another three months, it will be ready to fly and live independently. Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel.
25.01.2022 Sweetlips Fish School A colourful fish school makes for a compelling image especially when one of them is a maverick going the other way! It is this individual that draws the eye seducing the viewer to pause and explore the image in depth.Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel.
25.01.2022 Sea Whip corals form beautiful whip-like spirals up to several meters in length. Although interesting in themselves the tiny 2-3 centimeter whip gobies that make whip coral their habitat are also compelling if not very difficult subjects to capture as they have perfected the art of hiding behind the coral or darting along its length thus committing the photographer to a merry dance in pursuit! However pursuit and patience, not to mention tenacity, has its rewards. Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel.
24.01.2022 We are proud that Dive 2000 and our team are pet friendly. We are delighted to welcome Mia, a puppy poodle, to our canine family pictured here with proud owner, Dive 2000 Instructor Jenny. It so happens that a ScubaPro lead weight bag is the perfect accessory but we are certain Mia will soon outgrow it.
24.01.2022 Merry Xmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to all our Dive 2000 family, friends and wonderful customers. We thank you for your friendship and support during this difficult year and we look forward to an exciting New Year of Marine Life and Wildlife safari adventures as we progress into our 'New Normal'. The White Polyps on this red Gorgonian coral fan bring to mind the snowflakes on Xmas Tree branches and the Red/White Santa Claus colours. So they have become this year's Merry Xmas image. Best wishes from Kevin, Cherie & Josie and Team Dive 2000.Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel.
24.01.2022 Bengal tigers mating. The female is always very willing at first but always becomes instantly ferocious upon completion. But nothing can match the ferocity of the male tiger when he is confronted! The female white tiger is a result of a recessive gene trait, the gene which controls coat colour, white Bengal tigers naturally occur albeit very rarely! 22.01.2022 Our game drive in the Massai Mara was about to be interrupted by a looming thunderstorm. We were not expecting the severe hailstorm event that occurred as we pulled canvas covers over the land rover's viewing hatches to wait out the passing storm. Just nearby a lioness and her cubs were toughing out the pelting hail. As the short storm passed the cubs attempted to play on the ice but it was too cold for their little feet so they kept retreating atop the boulders. Hail is so r...are that our Massai guide had never seen it in the Mara and this will probably be the only time these little lions become Lions In Ice! 22.01.2022 Of all the World's cats, none can compare with the face of a tiger. It is nature's grandest portrait! The camera captures an image of vivid colour, enhanced by bold brush strokes of black stripes, whiskers whiter than snow, eyes of pure gold that stare back and pierce your soul! And above all, an image that reveals the power of the Worlds biggest cat. Only humans have more power.... We have created a World where there are now more houscats in our suburbs than there are tigers roaming free in the World's jungles today! 22.01.2022 Red is considered the most powerful colour in the colour spectrum and experienced photographers know to seize upon its use whenever possible. So when I came across this Yellowfin Red Snapper (Latin. Lutjanus guilcheri) known only from Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Maldives and the Bay of Bengal but probably widespread in this tropical region, I seized the opportunity to create a face portrait.Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel.
21.01.2022 Sebae Anemonefish. Amphiprion sebae, also known as the sebae clownfish, is an anemonefish found in the northern Indian Ocean, from Java to the Arabian Peninsula. When I captured this image I thought I was photographing the more common Clark's Anemonefish 'Clarkii Clownfish' so I didn't give it a lot of attention as I have many images of those. I was delighted to discover later I had successfully captured a rare species among the just 28 species of anemone fish Worldwide! Yes ...I am an anemone fish tragic, but then again, who isn't! 19.01.2022 This Cleaner Wrasse was busy removing parasites from a Coral Cod which subsequently allowed my very close proximity. Probably because it accepted me as just another marine creature also waiting to be cleaned. Acceptance such as this is not uncommon at cleaning stations which seem to exhibit a form of "Truce" among predators! And no predator seems to eat cleaner wrasse! That would be like eating your doctor or dentist!... Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel. See more
18.01.2022 Dive 2000 Saturday Shore Dive Oct 3rd at Clifton Gardens with Dive Leader Jeeven. Clifton always provides some gorgeous and interesting marine life! Jeeven was able to catch a photo of a few of the group (L-R) Allec, Allan & Patricia, Mark.
18.01.2022 Dive 2000 Dive Leader, Mo, snapped these photos of some of our divers preparing for another recent fun Sat morning shore dive at Clifton Gardens.
17.01.2022 This scorpionfish is a master of camouflage, especially in the colourless environment of the big blue. That is until we bring our lights into the depths and reveal the true colours there including the marine life that possess them. Scorpionfish are not aggressive but possess powerful venom in their spines capable of causing great pain if one is careless enough to annoy them. The most powerful venom is possessed by Stonefish, a member of this family. Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel.
17.01.2022 Journey of Giraffe. The collective noun for giraffe on the move is 'Journey' The noun for standing giraffe is 'Tower' When I look at this image my heart longs to be on a journey, back in Africa, with them. But for us that would be called 'Safari'... Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel. See more
17.01.2022 Soft Coral Caves. Maldives. The tidal currents that wash through the passes in the coral lagoons that make up much of the islands in the Maldives bring planktonic food that support spectacular soft coral colonies. Drifting with the current through these passes will reward you with a kaleidoscope of colours.Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel.
16.01.2022 The Australian Giant Octopus is a master of camouflage and this includes a camouflaged eye. With tentacles outstretched they can measure one and a half meters and have the ability to instantly change skin texture, change colour and even radiate a vivid display of flashing colours when challenged by other males during mating season. Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel
16.01.2022 A mother leopard growls a warning to protect her cub when a male leopard tried to approach her. The pair had settled down for the night after eating their fill on a kill that was still deposited nearby in the tree. Leopards are very solitary most of their lives, only pairing up for mating so the male would have received a severe reception if he had pressed his approach! 15.01.2022 My favourite anemone image occurs when the species, Magnificent Anemone, is folded into its vase shaped resting period. In this phase these anemones reveal their purple undersides in their full splendour. When I created this image that was my main focus, as long as the attendant anemonefish were posed, it didn't matter to me what species they were! Little did I know they were a pair of the rare Black Finned Anemonefish found only in the Maldives & Sri Lanka. If the anemones had not caught my attention, I would have missed my only chance ever to capture images of these very special little fish. Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel.
14.01.2022 Man can't match the art of nature. We can only be inspired by it or try to capture it. Such is the case in this image revealing the spectacular colour and detail of a sea star. The sharp eyed observer might also notice the little shrimp roaming its territory, a territory that might appear a vivid boulder strewn environment to this little creature. Or perhaps that's just my imagination at play!... Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel. See more
13.01.2022 This baby tiger cub is just a few weeks old yet it already instinctively knows how to stalk quietly through the grass. These babies are so precious now, there are only approximately 800 tigers left in the wild. As it has been born in a large private conservancy, even though it is in the wild with threat from other wild tigers, it along with two other cubs from this litter, have a good chance of survival. I hope to meet it again one day as the full grown tiger it is quite capa...ble of becoming. At the moment, it is very cute! 13.01.2022 Locked down in Australia due to Covid 19 Four Safaris booked but out of reach with closed borders. The words of the band Toto resonate powerfully with me! It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you... There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do I bless the rains down in Africa Gonna take some time to do the things we never had The wild dogs cry out in the night As they grow restless, longing for some solitary company I know that I must do what's right As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti I seek to cure what's deep inside, frightened of this thing that I've become! 13.01.2022 Mo, Dive 2000's Dive Leader on our Saturday Shore dive Nov 7th, took some fab photos of our happy dive group.
10.01.2022 These little Pygmy leatherjackets, no larger than an Australian 50 cent coin, are always a delight to meet. I captured an image of this one amongst soft coral polyps at Fly Point, Nelson Bay, just north of Sydney in our temperate ocean sea. It reminds me of an Autumn leaf floating amongst winter snowflakes! Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel
10.01.2022 He is battle scarred but sitting tall, the dominant male of this territory. He has fought and won many fights to earn the right to occupy, hunt, mate and pass on his genes. He lives in a world of Fur, Fang & Claw. He is Leopard, pound for pound the most powerful cat in the world. He is face to face with me just 5 meters away in our roofless safari vehicle, but I am no threat so he is relaxed, consequently so am I, but only just!... 08.01.2022 Coral Cod in full display. When photographing fish, there is always an ultimate moment to pull the trigger! You have to be aware of their body language, there is a split second when they determine you are encroaching their comfort zone. They will erect all their fins, Dorsal, Pectoral & Tail in a display that is spectacular. But actually they are preparing to dart away.... When you see this, do not hesitate! 08.01.2022 Giant Gorgonian Sea fans stand two meters tall above an acropora coral reef. Sapphire blue waters beckon divers deeper into the depths where the dreaded Nitrogen Narcosis awaits. However the lure of capturing such beauty will always remain the pursuit of the underwater photographer regardless of risk because no human artist has ever been able to outdo the art of nature. The intricate filigree of the gorgonian sea fan allows thousands of polyps to feed in the ocean current. Ea...ch coral polyp is deadly to planktonic life forms it feeds upon. The name Gorgonia is inspired by the Greek legend of the Gorgon whose head was surrounded by many snakes, she had the power to turn anyone who looked at her or them to stone. Well she has never turned me to stone but I have often had to resist her lure to dangerous depths.Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel. See more
07.01.2022 Leopard Crossings are much more effective at stopping traffic than Zebra Crossings. Yala National Park in Sri Lanka has a healthy population of leopards, here they are the apex predator with no threat from Lion, Tiger or Hyena! Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel.
07.01.2022 Antler coral is just one of many species of branching Acropora corals, beautiful in sculpture but not colourful. However such sculpture lends itself to black and white photography and the art of capturing light and shadow. Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel.
06.01.2022 Soft Coral reef with Anthias. Soft Corals are the supermodels of the coral reefs. Their vivid colours are irresistible compared to the pastel shades of hard coral. Sapphire blue water provides a stunning seascape background that would be the envy of any above water landscape photographer. But as an image it only comes to life when the fish appear! Anthias, also known as Fairy Basslets in the USA and Goldies in Africa are very welcome subjects in an image like this.Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel.
06.01.2022 This Goliath Grouper almost dwarfs my fellow photographers Richard Arnold & Tricia Henry. I note they have taken my advice to position their strobes correctly to provide soft shadows in the right place and reduce backscatter! The Goliath Grouper was fished and speared in the Caribbean almost to the point of near extinction. Fortunately, here at `Gardens of the Queen' a vast marinepark in Cuba gazetted by Fidel Castro, himself a keen diver, they have flourished. Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel.
06.01.2022 Shipwrecks always have a story to tell. If you take the time to explore this image you will see! The terracotta chimineas, undelivered, that were cargo destined to provide warmth to Balinese huts. The ship's wheel with the helm long abandoned as the vessel sank to a watery grave. The beautiful soft corals and Moorish Idol patrolling abandoned decks where sailors once commanded.... And finally, if you look really close, the abandoned nets of fishermen intent on stealing what remains of life from the sea. Ultimately, a story of total human failure when you pit man against nature! Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel See more
04.01.2022 My favourite genre is the big picture format. It allows me to capture the largest land animal on earth dwarfed in comparison to the vast wilderness of Africa. But the elephant still dwarfs the 3 meter crocodile which sharp eyes might spot sleeping on the sandbank, that I didn't see. Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel.
03.01.2022 Our Cuban Divemaster placed a small amount of food in the coral which is the typical procedure to get sharks close enough for photography. A pack of Carribean Reef Sharks obliged and competed with each other to find the food source. At this point it is very important to place yourself up current so you are not in the scent trail in the water column! Just one of many things you need to be aware of during a shark feeding frenzy. Another is to stay still and calm, even though it feels like you are in the middle of a place full of flying razorblades!
02.01.2022 Dive 2000 Sat Shore Dive - Oct 17 at Clifton Gardens with Dive Leader Jeeven. Miryiam, Kirsty, TJ, Tween & Grant, Paul, Gina & Molly, Jack & Jenny.
02.01.2022 Giant Stingray resting, Maldives. To create quality images like this the underwater the photographer must be within one meter of the subject. Something no wildlife photographer could or would normally ever do with terrestrial creatures. It never fails to amaze me how tolerant marine life can be but it is not without an element of danger. It is most important to learn and understand your subject's behaviour. Never approach from above, always ensure the subject has a clear mean...s of escape, watch carefully it's body language for the warning signals of flight or fight. Consequently you might just manage to retreat safely. Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel. See more
01.01.2022 Juvenile Great Moray Eel. This young moray gives no hint of the massive Giant Moray it will become. Giant Morays are impressive subjects but I was compelled to capture this junior due to the attractive coral home he currently inhabited among the reefs of the Maldive Islands. It will not be too long before it outgrows this home and reaches 3 meters in length, 30 Kilo in weight. Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel.
01.01.2022 The scale of this reclining Buddha can be gauged by comparison to the mother & baby who fortuitously arrived as I was capturing this image. The temple is called the Golden Temple of Dambulla, a UNESCO world heritage site. It is also the largest and best-preserved cave temple in Sri Lanka. The paintings on the wall date back hundreds of years. Join us on our next safaris here: http://www.dive2000.com.au/OverseasTravel.
