25.01.2022 Regretfully heading home from the fabulous South West Rocks. Found this thank break for the 8 hour drive. Certainly worth sharing. Thresher shark remain unseen on my bucket list.

24.01.2022 DiveCareDare has GoPro Hero 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8. They will be available for purchase soon. These are screenshots taken from Michael Dickson's GoPro HERO 9 at Wobby Rock, 11 km off Mooloolaba Beach, Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. How much better can a pocket sized action camera get?

23.01.2022 Nothing new here for NSW. Such action would represent a significant shift in policy and protocols for Queensland. Case in point, the tiger shark that was left overnight on a drumline off North Peregian Beach a week ago and dispatched by contractors for the shark control program the next day and dumped at sea. We can do better than this Queensland.

23.01.2022 This is absolutely wonderful news. I wonder if any of these grey nurse sharks are on their way to Wolf Rock having left the site where forty or more wintered about 11 km east of Mooloolaba Beach. If anyone took side views to show the pattern of brown blotches, I could try to match them with those that I have on file from July to October 2020 at Wobby Rock.

22.01.2022 Following confirmation of the tiger shark on a drumline off Peregian North Beach, this drone footage shows what happened on Saturday morning, 3rd October 2020. If this shark had been caught on a smart drumline in NSW, contractors would be notified electronically and be out to tag and release the shark as part of the world's largest shark tracking program. This tiger shark had been seen by the local surfing community on Friday morning. Surfing continued throughout the day. Wh...en I arrived at sunset, it was surfers who were leaving the water who pointed me in the direction of the hapless tiger. We can do better than this. Much better with non-lethal technologies

22.01.2022 Sunrise Tuesday 13 October 2020. Will those capable of being the change be listening?

22.01.2022 To celebrate Remembrance Day, Australia, and Veterans Day, USA, DiveCareDare joined Michael Dickson and the Reef Clean Team for the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of November, 2020, underwater on a reef 11 km off Mooloolaba Beach, Sunshine Coast, Queensland. In recent months we had the company of a mature grey nurse shark who frequently sought us out before continuing his annual migration this month. Macro was the go and Michael posted some great images on his FB Timelin...e that are worth seeing. I posted video screenshot images to compare re quality, and as points for reference/context. This album features screenshots from the same dive. A planktonic life form that reminded me of the face grabber from Aliens might be a juvenile crayfish. Orange Trichodesmium floating on the surface is definitely not coral spawn despite the coincidental timing with the annual event. A lions mane jelly is destined to be consumed in full by turtles to leave a school of tiny trevally with nowhere to hide from schools of tuna that were breaching the surface all around us on the day. Enjoy these screenshots from video clips that will be edited one day to showcase the best of marine biodiversity on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia.

21.01.2022 I have taken a break from an all day Zoom bat rescue training event, to upload raw files from the road trip to South West Rocks and back via Byron Bay and Cook Island. Soupy conditions in cool, 19C water were less than optimal for videography, but I did see my first hammerheads in Australian waters. I am highly motivated to have another go despite the 8 hour drive from Sunshine Coast with no guarantee that they will be there. That's diving. Being there is what it's all about.

21.01.2022 Enlightenment from a fisher. Refreshing and worthy of sharing.

20.01.2022 A raw clip for Nigel Marsh and the FB Page Ray Photography Group. The eight hour journey from Sunshine Coast to South West Rocks, NSW is always improved by stop overs along the way. In this case, a late afternoon kayak from Fingal Head to scuba dive on the north eastern corner of Cook Island near the Qld/NSW border. Imagine how good this experience would be without the slug of nutrient rich, 19C water that made videography challenging as sunset approached.

19.01.2022 Too little detail at this stage to know if this category 3 incident is provoked or unprovoked. Let's hope that truth will prevail. From the category 3 incidents that I am aware of, seldom does the copy SHARK ATTACK apply. When combined these two words attract a disproportionate reach to a JAWS affected world.

19.01.2022 Turtles on the rising tide at Cook Island, NSW. Note to self: fix the leaking dome port before the next road trip to South West Rocks because Cook Island will be on the stop over list on the way there or back........or both.

19.01.2022 In memory of White Spot and the Tiger Shark that was the most recent casualty of the Queensland Shark Control Program at North Peregian Beach this week. My friend and mentor, Jim Abernethy, wears his heart on his sleeve for those who cannot speak: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=4541721375899468&id=172830012788648

19.01.2022 Thank you for posting Mike Kaluza. Staying in love with a scuba diver is a storyline that Irene Krajewska has more than adequate images and details to contribute: https://m.facebook.com/PADI/videos/10153992214613112/

19.01.2022 Freedom of information access to images of the bycatch from shark control programs and costings for non-lethal alternatives based on a report that was commissioned by the Queensland Government gives ample evidence and cause to change from a lethal system that relies on baited drumlines and nets that can be avoided by actively foraging sharks. Current practices deliver a false sense of "protection" while drawing large predators closer to shore to feed on target and non-target ...species caught on the drumlines and nets. I have yet to be challenged by any authority about existing nets and drumlines being contributing factors for fatalities at Greenmount Beach, Gold Coast this year [white shark] and at Amity Point, North Stradbroke Island in 2006 [bull sharks]. Critically endangered grey nurse sharks are non-target species that are statistical casualties on spreadsheets that record unacceptable carnage that the wider community never see.....until now: https://7news.com.au//why-thousands-of-sea-creatures-are-d

18.01.2022 It's coincidental with this share that I have been selecting frames from video taken with Cristina Zenato to prepare content for a URL that my wife, Irene Krajewska, purchased this week. askthesharkman.com will feature human-shark interactions as personal experiences, the experiences of friends, and other shark divers. Human - Shark Interactions Categories 1, 2, 3, and 4 will feature in visual storylines to reveal how inappropriate the use of SHARK and ATTACK are when used ...together by journalists and the wider community. Very rarely does the word ATTACK apply when contributing factors and the circumstances that cause a bite or a fatality are considered. I'll be seeking the enthusiasm of like-minded others to have askthesharkman.com known as a conversation starter and advocate for those who cannot speak. Shark related content from DiveCareDare will be carried across to the new website for themes that have yet to be determined. Ideas and contributions are welcome.

18.01.2022 DiveCareDare is witness to the impact of fishers, spearfishers, aquarium species collectors and recreational divers on an unprotected patch of reef where critically endangered grey nurse sharks have been aggregating over winter and spring in recent years. So it is with a sense of bewilderment and loss that I read of decisions that reverse existing levels of protection for habitat at the other end of the migration for grey nurse sharks. I have asked to be kept informed about d...evelopments, but the first step is to register public. Please send your objection using the link in this shared post. I'd like to know more about the political and non political factors that contributed to this unbelievable decision. Dare to be the difference for those who cannot speak.

17.01.2022 A forty minute paddle across to Julian Rocks after hammerheads at South West Rocks with the SubSurface Road Trip. Glassy conditions out here with company, Marine Parks and a dive boat. Both this site and Fish Rock Cave are in the top five dive sites within commuting distance of home on the Sunshine Coast. This site is a three hour drive. Fish Rock is 8 hours without traffic on the Gold Coast.

16.01.2022 This is the wisdom of hindsight. A perfect scenario where a reliable dome port could deliver a near perfect above and below context for this encounter with a mature, male green turtle off Cook Island, NSW. Note to self: Find the leak and fix the dome port.

16.01.2022 I accidentally deleted a balanced article that addressed the spike in category 3 [bite] and category 4 [fatal] human-shark interactions for 2020 around Australia. While searching for it, this post addresses the same content from a South African POV: https://www.2oceansvibe.com//why-theres-been-a-spike-in-a/

16.01.2022 The day before a Category 1 encounter with hammerheads on the south side of Fish Rock Cave, I had a technical Category 2 encounter with a grey nurse shark at the crowded entry of the 80 metre tunnel. At 0:31 of this raw clip, the camera shake is the giveaway for a rather chilled grey nurse shark that swam between me and the GoPro camera on a stick. I'm hopeful the Michael Dickson captured that moment as a second camera POV. Needless to say, grey nurse sharks were there first, and they out numbered the divers who were lining up to have passage through the cave.

16.01.2022 Wobby Rock....the gift off Mooloolaba Beach, Sunshine Coast that keeps giving. The site had only male grey nurse sharks four years ago. Then a female turned up and a few more in the years that followed. In 2020 we might get double digits and a total of 40 or more of these critically endangered sharks on file with RHS and LHS identification images.

15.01.2022 This feeding event is not so different to the Sardine Run in South Africa when sea temperatures below 19C bring sardines close to shore from deep water. In the shallows, whales, dolphin, sharks, and cape gannets feast on shoals that extend from Cape Town to Mozambique. Divers travel from all over the world to immerse themselves with one of the world's most amazing events without fear of shark bite or fatality. What makes this drone footage extraordinary is that it is filmed... in our own backyard in northern NSW. Lennox Head, Ballina, Byron Bay, and surf breaks north to the Gold Coast, Queensland are documented hotspots for human-shark interactions that have ended badly for individuals and for regional economies as seasonal tourism destinations. The jury is out on the many beach burial sites along the coast being a significant factor. Scientific investigation and the way the data was interpreted by media and regional councils has me expecting that the trend of category 3 [bite] and 4 [fatal] incidents will continue for the surf zones in this region. We should expect more drone footage of this kind to show how frequently ocean users are in close proximity to charismatic marine megafauna, including sharks, and move towards non-lethal ways to keep people and sea life safer without shark nets and baited drumlines. Note that there were no sharks captured by this drone footage at Lennox Heads. I would love to have been on and in the water to witness this first hand. For sharks that might show up, I would be wearing an electronic safety device that I know to be effective with bull sharks that approach from my blind side [YouTube: divecaredare electronic]. https://www.9news.com.au//6a1ccef1-3981-4e75-bd60-36c4627b

15.01.2022 I have shore dives from Kings Beach only a handful of times without recording representative sea life. This post is shared for the record. As a South Australian for whom shore and jetty dives were the norm, diving on the Sunshine Coast has been more around Mudjimba Island via kayaks and on sites off shore via charters and private vessels.

15.01.2022 This large, pregnant, grey nurse shark at Wobby Rock, 11 km east of Mooloolaba Beach, Sunshine Coast, Queensland is a welcome sign for late September, 2020. The low resolution of a video posted to Facebook still reveals sufficient detail for a positive identification image to be captured for Citizen Science like Grey Nurse Shark Watch. The brown markings are as unique as finger prints for each shark. See screen shots in the comment thread. This mature female has lost part o...f her anal fin - another useful feature for identification purposes. She has a "love bite" on her belly that will heal rapidly without leaving visual evidence as points for reference beyond the breeding season that has started for 2020. I do not expect this shark to be seen at Queensland's largest aggregation of breeding females [ Wolf Rock, east of Double Island Point ]. Without identification images we would not know. There are questions to be answered about where our winter visitors are coming from and where do they go after their 3 or 4 month visit to the Sunshine Coast.

15.01.2022 A teaser from South West Rocks where hammerheads honoured the 8 hour road trip from Sunshine Coast, Queensland to the end destination, South West Rocks/Fish Rock Cave to see them.

14.01.2022 If a hawksbill turtle can seek human interaction as seen here with a commercial diver, imagine the same interaction with a sentient tiger shark. If you have difficulty with that, use the following search words on YouTube to witness a reunion of tiger shark Tarantino with shark whisperer and conservationist, Jim Abernethy: Tiger shark love Tarantino https://www.facebook.com/CommercialDiving/videos/10155068676966274/

13.01.2022 Irene and I will attend the 6:30 pm screening of ENVOY: Shark Cull at the Sunshine Plaza Cinemas on Saturday 21st November having missed the opportunity to secure tickets for the first screening. This full length documentary is destined to be a game changer. At the very least, it should be a catalyst to fast track alternatives to shark nets and baited drumlines as site specific technologies to improve safety and survival in wild marine environments for humans and charismatic marine mega fauna. Widespread awareness and feedback to the Queensland Parliament will encourage enlightened, fact based decision making to a world that is watching.

13.01.2022 For want of a community group to step up as a partner for a Stronger Communities Grant with a working title: Zero Preventable Deaths from Creek to Coast........ I am convinced that the next preventable shark - related fatality will not be at a patrolled beach in Queensland. Today, I will flag this concern with leaders representing three tiers of government. I will highlight the failure of nets and drumlines to prevent the death of Gold Coast surfer, Nick Slater, at Greenmoun...t Beach, September 2020. Had Nick applied the advisories of Queensland's SharkSmart programme, he would not have entered the water. If Nick ignored the advisories and had worn an electronic shark deterrent of the kind that could soon be recommended by the Queensland Government, he would probably be alive today. I tested two electronic devices with wild bull sharks to record 100% efficacy in 2015/16 (YouTube search words: DiveCareDare electronic). I did not have the opportunity to test the same devices with tiger sharks as will happen this year in Queensland. I had at least ten different tiger sharks that could have produced data at Bimini and Tiger Beach in The Bahamas. It was unconscionable for me to do that because they were highly valued sentient sharks like Emma that were supporting several shark diving charters. This is the back story about sentient tiger shark Emma. One that will be told by a Queenslander about a wild tiger shark like the Legend of Mudjimba Island (RIP) one day: https://youtu.be/iPGb9FMLl8g

13.01.2022 Initiatives like this are at the core of DiveCareDare. Your support and sharing with others will be the difference. Thank you. http://chng.it/zR9NhgTkdF

13.01.2022 I have seen this behaviour off Mo'orea, French Polynesia, but never captured it on video. Great to sea.

12.01.2022 Hammertime at South West Rocks. So good, we're going out again tomorrow for another NITROX hit. If you have never tried NITROX, this is the place to do it, and you won't want to use air again. Hammers or not FishRock Cave really does ROCK.

12.01.2022 FOUND. The article that was accidentally deleted as email content from a friend: https://www.australiangeographic.com.au//shark-bite-fatal/

12.01.2022 It's hammer time at South West Rocks. Bring it on. https://youtu.be/UyikkE9bBsE

12.01.2022 I expect that Jarrod Bleijie MP LNP will continue to represent my KAWANA electorate for the Queensland Parliament. Donald Trump and Jarrod Bleijie MP are galeophobic. Their irrational fear of sharks is not fake news - its in the public domain. At least Jarrod and I can talk objectively about shark related matters and measures that support biodiversity in general. I was impressed when Jarrod faced his fears by taking the plunge with sharks at SeaLife to raise funds for anima...l welfare groups. Perhaps this time around Jarrod could take the plunge to save lives by supporting non-lethal technologies to enhance human safety and the survival of sharks and charismatic marine megafauna in wild environments. Relationships matter. If the candidate of your choice doesn't get over the line 31st October 2020, get to know the one being paid with your tax dollars, find common ground, and move forward. In the alternative, forget politics, enjoy what we have while it is still here. We should be grateful that COVID-19 has delivered a sense of how the natural world can thrive when our human normal is on hold. Make your choices count. Voting is compulsory for Australians and my vote was cast on day one at the propelling venue close to home. It took three minutes. We are much better positioned for the voice of Queenslanders to be heard compared with blind tribalism that seems to be tearing the "UNITED" States apart. Interesting times to be sure. Red, Blue or Green? We are the difference. Be the difference. Influence others to be the difference with you. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" is a biblical concept spoken by Jesus in Luke 6:31 and Matthew 7:12; it is commonly referred to as the "Golden Rule." The Golden Rule is not tribal nor religious. It's common sense to think and do things that value life, living, and diversity. Mother Nature will look after the rest. #netsoutnow

09.01.2022 Shark Bay, WA is a location to see how quickly the local community responds to mounting pressure to cull @ 20 cents per kilo of meat and fin shark for premium prices inside a declared sanctuary. Who will be on the front foot first? WA or Qld Government? For context.....the global value of shark tourism v shark fisheries: https://www.researchgate.net//259434808_Global_economic_va

08.01.2022 To all of the volunteers who remove recreational fishing line from marine environments. Thank you to Sunshine Coast Clean Up Divers who have donated 70 kg of fishing line for a Nature Works commission to highlight the problem of marine debris.

07.01.2022 More people doing recreational activities more frequently without taking personal responsibility for their own safety in wild environments could increase the number of category 3 [shark bite causing injury] and category 4 [fatality] if every other contributing factor was constant.....and they are not. This article is worth reading on the understanding that a board rider who surfs storm waves in low visibility conditions, surfs at dawn or at dusk, surfs alone, or surfs when th...ere are large schools of fish moving along gutters in the surf zone could reasonably be argued as a "provoked" attack. The reasons for human - shark interactions ending badly are many and varied. Seldom does the word ATTACK apply when all of the contributing factors are considered with dispassionate objectivity. By January 2021, the various platforms of DiveCareDare will be repurposed to devote most posts to human-shark interactions, saving lives through shark related education initiatives, flagging behaviours and products that increase the chance of survival when in wild environments and close proximity with sharks, and similar themed visual storylines. I thank my Division 4 Sunshine Coast Councillor, Joe Natoli, for sharing this article via email with me. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-54112992

07.01.2022 It's going to be a while before I can travel from Australia to share more experiences with Jim Abernethy. For those who have not shared experiences with Jim and the sharks that he interacts with at Tiger Beach, you should watch some of his posts on YouTube and do whatever you can to secure a shared experience sooner than later. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=4561388343932771&id=172830012788648

06.01.2022 This research station in South Bimini is walking distance from some of the best human - shark interactions on the planet. Great hammerheads, tigers, bulls, Caribbean reef sharks, lemons, and conch crunching nurses amongst other species in some of the clearest water possible for eye contact that is so important for physical interactions that don't involve food or feeding. I hope that this event will be recorded to post for viewing for review and for sharing.

05.01.2022 I was talking with Jim for nearly an hour on WhatsApp this week. Predictable topics came up including the idea of rebooting USA. Travel to Florida might not be possible for a while. I highly recommend bucket listing an expedition with Jim. I am likely join one or more adventure bound Australian divers and catch up with tiger shark Emma in daylight next time. ... If you are thinking about going, keep me in the loop. I was going in February 2021, but that is not an option for now.

04.01.2022 COVID-19 lockdown has left the sharks at Tiger Beach wondering where all of the humans have gone. It would appear that they are making up for lost time. These sharks show up for human-shark interactions. Many have enduring, one on one, physical, sentient interactions with human friends. Food is not the reason why they show up.

03.01.2022 Diving today because I live in a country that enables such choices to be made. We are here because others have made the ultimate sacrifice to make it so. Lest We Forget.

03.01.2022 THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING to be at a screening of ENVOY: Shark Cull with film maker Andre Borrel, his wife, and some of the crew. The 104 minute movie is starting so I'll leave you to watch the official trailer: https://youtu.be/KcyB9_DQs0M

03.01.2022 Grey nurse sharks tourism off the Sunshine Coast is scheduled for an interview with Annie Gaffney on ABC 90.3 FM, Sunshine Coast, 9:50 am, Monday 12 October, 2020. I'll not be surprised if we get distracted by matters relating to non-lethal alternatives for shark nets and drumlines. #netsoutnow https://www.abc.net.au//33-million-dollar-plan-to/12747764

02.01.2022 I believe that we are witness to a small breeding aggregation being established off the Sunshine Coast. We should be able to confirm in 2021 if the number of females continue to increase and they stay longer to both pump and return for the mating activity that we have seen in recent weeks. Thanking Michael Dickson for posting this while I responded to a call about a tiger shark that is being left on a drumline overnight before contractors will attend to what they will find on Saturday morning.

02.01.2022 ENVOY: Shark Cull, the full length documentary that visually demonstrates what is really happening with the publicly funded drumlines and shark nets is destined to be a catalyst for change. Sold out screenings this month at selected cinemas will be followed by more. The truth is out there. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=223027802497255&id=107172377416132

01.01.2022 Great hammerheads are targetted by fishers in Florida. Many don't survive their release because of the stress and toxins that build up during the hookup. All sharks are protected in nearby Bahamas where hammerheads have extended the length of their visits for feeding and non-feeding interactions with scientists and recreational divers. Sharks are not fed as a reward for their interactions with Jim Abernethy. These expeditions are bucket Listers out of Lake Park/West Palm Bea...ch, Florida. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=4510814922323447&id=172830012788648 See more
