16.01.2022 DRTA representation this month: Kayla, our Victorian representative attended the NACA (National Aged Care Alliance) virtual conference with discussions on the Residential Aged Care Visitors Code and Royal Commission. President Charlise and Kayla attended a focus group with Australian Healthcare Associates on Review of Restraints Principles advocating for the increase in DT/TR staffing to help support the reduction of restraint usage in residential aged care facilities.

15.01.2022 Our final two sessions on day 1 were: Kelsey Hoy, Diversional Therapist from Kenmore Hospital Goulburn presenting a Leisure Bite segment Arts access in the mental setting. She shared the challenges and successes of facilitating a program within the hospital and art gallery for consumers. Orquidea Tamayo Mortera, National Diversional Therapist for Summerset in New Zealand presented on the Inmu (stands for interactive music) an innovative and inclusive technology piloted in their organisation with very positive results.

15.01.2022 What a great first day of conference! Following from our keynote speaker were Diversional Therapists Kate Noble and Julieanne Cardwell, who spoke about the SENSES Study: The Impact of Diversional Therapy on the Agitation of patients with Dementia. Both were pivotal contributors to the development , implementation and evaluation of the sensory room and DT interventions at Campbelltown Hospital. Next was DRTA President, WSU Teaching and Learning Coordinator and Doctor of Philosophy student Charlise Bennett with WSU Academic Course Advisor and Doctor of Philosophy *under examination Stewart Alford. An interesting presentation of their findings from a scoping exercise on 100 diversional therapy positions advertised across Australia.

Lesley shared their palliative care kit developed to facilitate a respectful death and how to ensure quality conversations in end of life wishes

10.01.2022 Conference updates from this morning Welcome back to our friends from USA Anne Richard and Robin McNeal from NCTRC (national council for therapeutic recreation certification) who spoke about the certification process and considerations for Australian DT/RTs. Diana Rizos then provided a light hearted session Hilarity amidst the Covid-19 chaos highlighting how we have adapted to the changing health environment to continue meeting clients needs.

09.01.2022 Today DRTA will participate in an interactive webinar for the development of the Voluntary Industry Code of Practice (Strategic Action 2). The webinar is being held by Leading Age Services Australia (LASA) who has been leading the project on behalf of the Aged Care Workforce Industry Council (Council). Board member Kayla will be atfending the webinar and ensuring the interests of our members are brought forward. Our volunteer board members work hard to represent the profession of Diversional and Recreation Therapy to give us all a voice.
