25.01.2022 Focusing on 9-13 Engage your child/ren to make a list of things they could do independently without needing adult supervision. For example: Create a music band with friends using Facetime (Zoom or Skype). An extension activity could be - record seperate pieces and put them together using garage band (there is a You Tube video on how to use Garage Band). Share with family and friends.... Create a reading club with friends - sharing a reading of a favourite book or movie. Create a drama - record and share with family and friends as the potential audience. Continue making the list with things your child/ren like to do. It is about engaging them and their interests. They can also come up with ideas about safety in the home, cleaning after each activity and respectful use of space and resources. Here is one great activity that we have tried during school holidays - using things from the kitchen that are safe and natural.

18.01.2022 Kids may need to access emotional support by talking to a person that has skills in listening and supporting children. Kid Helpline is an important service to consider for supporting children during this period of social distancing.

18.01.2022 We are proud to continue to support families and children in Clunes. You might find that the messages in our second video are applicable regardless of the location.

17.01.2022 Three days into Term 2 and if there is one thing that is becoming clear, it's that we need to expect the unexpected. But there is something to be said about kno...wing we aren't alone. That in fact, we are all just winging it! Writer and mum of three, Natasha Poynton has joined with Diversitywise Educational Services and Clunes Primary School to provide Clunes parents with some humorous, but also practical articles about Covid-19 learning from home. Like the Q&A's Diversity Wise will be publishing over the next weeks, Natasha has focused on some of the questions we are receiving from local parents. So here is her first - "How to Expect the Unexpected". Personally I can't wait for the article about coping with web cams invading your home! I don't know who asked that question but hell yeah, I'm hearing you! Got a question? 17.01.2022 Supporting our children and the families mental health is important during this period of social distancing and learning from home. Listen before reacting (I count to 10 in my head) Repeat what you have heard..."So what I heard you saying is..."... Check..."Did I hear you right?" Support autonomous thinkers..."What can we do about this?" or "What are your suggestions?" If there is tension between siblings ...offer several solutions that you would be happy for them to choose from. Choice is important and make the children feel empowered. If it is a major issue who is the person who you can call to debrief before you talk to your child. Have a friend's number handy and negotiate a supportive reciprocal relationship.

15.01.2022 It is exciting for us to collaborate on this project with Clunes Neighbourhood House. This is a challenging time for everyone and Diversitywise Educational Services is focused on supporting communities to turn tensions and challenges into opportunities for learning and growth.

14.01.2022 @diversity wise we feel that even through we are all coping with the COVID-19 social distancing policy we must not forget to think about the lived experiences of individuals and groups that all too often are pushed to the margins. We are taking the time to think about individuals and groups that might be impacted and who might otherwise be forgotten as we go through the motion of figuring out how to take care of ourselves and our families. Thinking about and reaching out - in any way we can is what diversitywise is all about. This photo is from the 2020 Better Together Conference. It is true - we are better together!

13.01.2022 During this period of social distancing and learning from home, we need to reflect what we know about our children. Some ideas to support our children. Focusing on 0-8 needs Water play in the bath tub- add bubbles, natural food die etc.- add toys that can be used in water without getting damaged.... Sensory play - sand, mud, seeds in a tub, add blocks and and other toys. Art - collect leaves, bark, and other objects from the garden bed (think about caring for the environment by not damaging plant life). You might collect object from a walk (around the farm, neighbourhood of forest reserve) use a piece of newspaper or sheet of paper that is available to paste found objects - create your master piece! Record a story about the art work and share with family and friends. Music - get objects from around the house to create musical instruments. See video below. Make a music video to share with family and friends. Have fun learning from home!

12.01.2022 Taking the time to share one of our successes from earlier this year. With the COVID-19 we got busy supporting our clients and forgot to share this important professional development event for Artarmon Explore and Develop in North Sydney. It was a beautiful day spent with the staff and children, followed by a session with the leadership team and later with all the staff together - working with issues relating to diversity and building an efficacious community.... We were treated to a beautiful dinner by the staff from the babies room. There was laughter, sharing and think about ways to be more inclusive - engaging the head, heart and hand. Part of our service was to consult with the director and cultural leader, to deliver an online survey, conduct observation - all which informed a report that will support the centre to grow and develop. We thank the staff for the welcome we received and we hope to work with them in the future. This event was closed with Agli presenting a certificate to the centre. We also send staff personalised certificates of participation.

11.01.2022 @diversitywise we hope that everyone is well and coping with the situation we are all faced with given COVID-19. One of our services is support for parents/carers - let us know how we can be of assistance. If you know of parents/carers who would like to talk to someone about how they might help their child/ren cope, pass on our details. We thank you for supporting our mission to improve the lives of children.

07.01.2022 On our bike ride over the weekend, Alex and I, decided to set up a community challenge. We are calling it "I spy the rainbow". What we invite you to do - as you go about your exercise (walk the dog, ride a bike, etc.) take a photo of the rainbow you spotted and post your rainbow photo with #ispytherainbow.

06.01.2022 Turning this period of social distancing and learning from home into an opportunity for life education:

04.01.2022 For any age but may need to supervise with younger children COOL PHOTOGRAPHY! Add a microscope to a mobile phone or Ipad. Low cost and fun (according to my 13 year old) who is a keen photographer - $5 from Kmart - something you can purchase and have it delivered.... There are also other types of lenses that you can purchase online if your children get hooked on this like mine has. This can be used inside or outside - connects children to the living world - see examples shared. Create a photo club with friends and share images - adding a social aspect to the activity to break feeling of isolation. This is also a great activity for visual learners. Talk about the ethics of photography with your child/ren before hand: Three things to make sure your child/re think about (there is information on web about ethics of photography to guide you talk): Respect the subject - person, animal, plant etc. Do not take photos that could harm or misrepresent someone or something. If it is a photo of a person ask for their permission and make sure that the image a respectful.

02.01.2022 Proud to share our new article with you with thanks to the team of authors. Especially Annette Brombal for their leadership on this write. Read and share widely.
