17.01.2022 The Netflix Tax - GST on digital downloads from offshore suppliers to Australia. It is a long and complicated piece of tax legislation that is designed, of course, to collect tax from a hitherto untapped source, the supply to Australia of digital downloads and online purchases by overseas suppliers such as, Adobe, MS Office, Google, Facebook, eBay, Canva, etc., Over 3,000 offshore businesses had to register in the Australia tax system for GST if they supplied more than $...75,000 worth of digital products to Australia. What you as a purchaser have to do, is to register your ABN number and advise the overseas supplier that you are registered for GST, then they wont charge you GST on your purchase. If you fail to do so, and they do charge you GST this cannot be claimed as a GST Credit on your BAS return (assuming you are registered for GST). To get this money back you would have to contact the overseas supplier to get the GST back. All of these purchases will be entered into your books as GST Free by your bookkeeper. (Zebbies Bookkeeping). If you arent GST registered, then supplying your ABN number is enough to ensure you arent going to be charged GST. This only applies to purchases for use within your business, not for personal purchases, where you will be charged GST. Further to this, the overseas business does not have to supply you with an invoice so it is up to you to find out whether you have been charged GST or not! I see you scratching your head as you try to wrap your brain around this! Dont worry, you are not alone. Bookkeepers, Accountants and Australian consumers are befuddled by this piece of legislation that is likely to cause problems for everyone in the reporting area in the future. However, it is in your best interest to advise your supplier of your ABN and GST status as you could be paying 10% more than necessary on that overseas digital download. https://www.ato.gov.au//information-for-business-purchase/ Hope this makes things a little clearer for you! 15.01.2022 SCAM WARNING With tax time over, be on high alert for phone calls demanding the payment of fake tax debts. Stay vigilant and warn your friends and family so... they dont get tricked. Be suspicious if someone contacts you demanding payment. Remember, we would never: Request the payment of a tax debt via prepaid gift cards (eg iTunes or Google Play) Ask for direct credit to be paid into a personal bank account or via an ATM Demand immediate payment, use aggressive behaviour, or threaten you with arrest or deportation. These are typical scammer tactics! If youre unsure about a call you receive, hang up immediately. Phone our scam hotline on 1800008540 to check if the call was legitimate or report the scam. 09.01.2022 Approached by someone offering unusually cheap tax services or promising refunds that are too good to be true? Beware of unregistered preparers! Remember, only... a registered tax agent can charge a fee to prepare and lodge your tax return. Today an unregistered preparer from Sydney received a criminal conviction for dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage. Charging a $100 fee, he used the personal myGov credentials of 1,098 individuals to lodge tax returns on their behalf, redirecting some of the refunds into his own bank account.
