20.01.2022 Vale Paul Greene The De La Salle Football Club wishes to pass on its condolences to Cathy, Veronica, Lucinda and the wider Greene family, on the passing of Paul on Monday night. Paul was a great player and passionate supporter of our club, and his presence will be sorely missed when 2021 rolls around. A tribute When Paul made his way into the seniors in late 1979 we knew he had been a star player in the U19s and there was a great expectation around him as his older brother Mi...chael was already putting his stamp on the game and both were real characters. Straight away it was obvious Paul was very talented and had exquisite skills both by hand and foot on both sides of his body and a great feel for the goals. He also used his big hands to advantage being very strong overhead for a medium height player. Paul’s late emergence in 1979 was no hindrance as he quickly established himself in the senior side and played in the A Grade premiership team that year. He became an integral member of the 1980 team who also went on to win the premiership. Two A grade premierships in two years was quite a start to what should have been a brilliant career. He was a great mover and he displayed a rare cleverness with the ball as it seemed to follow him around. He had a great sense of team and was a very popular member of the group. It is no surprise for those of us lucky enough to play with or watch the Greene boys play that an offspring would be an AFL star as Toby has proven to be. A badly broken leg followed by a knee injury deprived us all of watching Paul weave his magic for many more years, but the memories of 79/80 will always stay with us. Paul’s bright personality and sense of fun will be sadly missed and you only had to spend a night with Paul at an Elvis Presley extravaganza to understand his love of The King and music generally and how much fun he could be. May he rest peacefully in the Graceland Mansion in the sky draped with his blue & gold scarf! Playing record First played 1978 40 senior and 25 U19s games. 1980 Bert Healy Most Improved. Senior Big V Representative 1980. Member of 1979 & 1980 Senior Men’s Premiership teams. #WeAreDeLa

16.01.2022 The De La Salle Football Club wishes to pass its condolences to the family of Brian Raynor on Brian's recent passing. Brian started with the club as a player in 1959 and played 45 Senior and 7 Reserves games. Work commitments were responsible for Brian’s inability to train regularly and his confinement to Reserves footy, and then to early retirement. Brian is remembered as a nuggety resting rover who worked in tandem with B Grade B&F winner Peter Giles. Brian's mother Nita ...was one of the tent ladies for some years and his sister Marie taught several past players in Grade 4 at De La. Brian’s son Andrew also played with the club 1991-94. And grandson Tom Webb (parents Lisa and Matt who are from our proud sponsors Malvern Auto Tech) is a current u23s player. Condolences from all at De La footy club. #WeAreDeLa

14.01.2022 Vale Bernie Hoy The De La Salle Football Club wishes to pass on its condolences to Bernie’s wife Kaye Evans and his sons Justin, Damian, Brendan and Stephen on the passing of Bernie Hoy on Tuesday morning. Since attending De La college with his brothers, Bernie has been a regular club supporter and contributor since the 1970s. Bernie loved his pre-home game lunches, having assisted in their organisation for many years and it was rare that he would ever miss one. He would alw...ays be seen in the rooms after-matches belting out the ‘Cheers, Cheers’ and having a drink with mates the likes of Tony O’Callaghan, Jim Hawkins, Gerry Gill, Peter Giles, Bill Soding, John Butler and Bill Mackintosh as well as catching up with his sons and grandkids who are always regulars at games. Bernie’s indelible imprint on the club has been introducing his four sons to the club, who have taken on various roles over the years as players, on the committee and, in their younger years, as banner makers. Bernie’s executive career also saw him play a key role at VAFA level with his company National Trustees being the VAFA’s first-ever sponsor back in the early 1980s. We wish the Hoy and Evans families all the best in this sad time. Rest In Peace Bernie. See more
