22.01.2022 Beautiful baby Hooded Parrots, just fledged and now being handled.

19.01.2022 When heavy metal isn't something to mosh to. Frankie's mum came to see us as she noticed Frankie had vomited up his food a couple of times. While this may not s...eem urgent, on presentation Dr Luke found Frankie's crop was empty and he was a little quiet for a young galah. It was decided x-rays would be best to find out what was going on. The images showed some pieces of metal sitting in his ventriculus (his stomach). If ingested, metal causes a variety of problems that can be life threatening. The source of Frankie's metal is unknown; however, common sources are cages, metal toys, jewellery or even furniture. Treatment includes hospitalisation with supportive care and medication to neutralize the toxic effects of the metal. See more

06.01.2022 Pol Pol’s Funky Pink Beak! We met Pol Pol after an accident at home left him with a chip fracture on his rhinotheca (upper beak). The damage was severe and t...he underlying tissue was exposed which meant Pol Pol was not only at risk of his beak cracking further and becoming irreparable, but also has the risk of developing infection. Radiographs were taken to assess for any other injuries and to ensure the fracture didn’t extend further into the bone. Thankfully, there was no evidence of further damage, and we could proceed with the repair. Dr Marianne had to get creative when making Pol Pols prosthetic beak, this is where the amazing team at Paragon Dental Group came to the rescue! They were lovely enough to help us find a suitable acrylic which could be shaped appropriately and hard enough to crack seeds! The beak was thoroughly scrubbed to ensure no bacteria was being trapped underneath and a topical antibiotic ointment was applied. The dental acrylic, Magilight, was then shaped into the beak to perfectly match Pol Pol’s. The beak was attached to Pol Pol with a thin layer of Protemp, a cold setting liquid acrylic. Once the beak was a perfect fit it was set in place with ultraviolet light. Finishing touches were then made with a dremel. The beak prosthetic will grow out over time with Pol Pol's underlying beak and be worn away naturally with normal use. Pol Pol recovered very well and seemed none the wiser that he now had the coolest beak around! Clinic: Balcatta
