23.01.2022 Dobell Card Found in a Secondhand Book The card, a 50mm x 75mm ‘Picture Piece’, was found in a secondhand book by Fiona Jacobson, who has kindly donated it to us. One of 60 such cards distributed in 1950-51 by the Sanitarium Health Food Company, it was designed to illustrate the Archibald Prize entry in the Sanitarium Children’s Australian Encyclopaedia. The sitter’s clothing on the card is reminiscent of that worn by Margaret Olley in Dobell’s 1948 Archibald winning portrait.

18.01.2022 Another Big Price for a Dobell Painting! A study of Joshua Smith, painted by Dobell for his 1943 Archibald Prize winning portrait, sold for $915,000 on September 22nd in Sydney, at the Bonhams auction of the Sir Warwick and Lady Fairfax ‘Fairwater’ Collection. It is the second time a Dobell painting has passed the $900,000 mark at auction in the last six months - ‘Woman in Restaurant’ sold for $939,000 at Sotheby’s in Melbourne on April 9th earlier this year. The pre-auction estimate for the Study was $200 - 300,000.

16.01.2022 ‘Newcastle Weekly’ Tells the Dobell House Story In its 6th June 2019 issue the ‘Newcastle Weekly’ carried a story about Dobell House entitled ‘Labour of love to preserve piece of history.’ It included photos of DH vice-president Sharon Pearl, who had organised the ‘Newcastle Weekly’ visit, and 92 year-old life member and veteran volunteer Cliff Curran. The ‘Newcastle Weekly’ is distributed free at shopping centres and other locations throughout the greater Newcastle area. We are pleased to report the article has already produced a spike in visitors to Dobell House. Well done Sharon.

14.01.2022 Wangi Mens Shed to the Rescue! The Wangi Mens Shed came to our rescue recently and helped us out of a problem. Our plan was to protect and preserve Dobell’s painting workstation and portable paintbox in his studio with clear acrylic covers. We got a quote, obtained a small grant from the State Government but when we went back to our supplier they had ceased production of acrylic covers. But the Mens Shed, with advice from Dobell House ‘handyman guru’ Richard Worsley, were able to produce one for us at the same price we had been quoted. Thank you guys.
