10.01.2022 Let's talk about skin cancer... What is it? When we prolong our exposure to the sun's harsh UV rays, we cause DNA damage to our skin cells. When our body's internal repair machinery fails to fix the damage, faulty cell replication happens which trigger the abnormal growth of cells. These eventually become cancers.... How common is it? Skin cancer is one of Australia’s most common cancers. About 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer before the age of 70. And more than 13,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma (a type of skin cancer) in Australia every year Why us? In general, people with pale skin types are more vulnerable to skin cancer. But we Australians have the wrong skin type for our environment. We are populated by many people with fair skin whose ancestors come from much less sunny climates. This lack of protective pigmentation leaves our skin cells especially vulnerable to the DNA-damaging rays from the sun. What do I do? Protect your skin. Follow the 5 sun safe rules.
