25.01.2022 Good reminder to be careful with horse medications, even the ones that don’t require a prescription. Click on the link below for more information. https://www.facebook.com/508496396016540/posts/1410423179157186/?extid=Stnzb8qWmKA6E9Bg&d=n

24.01.2022 Check out this awesome video Dr. Liz Barrett made (just for fun) of a cesarean section in a mare. Cesarean sections are done for a number of reasons when the fo...al can’t be born normally. It could be a reason relating to the foal, for example: it’s front feet and head aren’t all coming out in the right order. It can also be done for reasons relating to the mare, for example: a pelvis injury or concurrent injury that prevents her from normal foaling. This mare was unable to foal normally. You’ll notice the foal looks asleep when we remove him from the uterus and that’s because he is! The same drugs we use to anesthetize the mare reach the fetus and it is also asleep. We have a team from our McGee Medicine Center help the foal wake up once it’s out of the uterus, while the surgeon closes up the mare. #TeamHagyard #FoalingSeason

24.01.2022 AVOIDING GASTRIC ULCERS IN HORSES Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) is a major equine health problem worldwide. Multiple studies have reported a 90% incidenc...e rate of ulcers in performance horses. Ulcers negatively and sometimes severely affect a horse’s ability to perform. They cause pain and discomfort. They may reduce a horse’s appetite which in turn limits its capacity to maintain bodyweight and they possibly lead to the development of vices including wind sucking and crib biting. While gastric ulcers have long been recognised as a major health concern there is an evident lack of understanding in the horse owning community about what causes them and how they can be prevented. Continue reading https://feedxl.com/8-avoiding-gastric-ulcers/ to find out a little bit more about what gastric ulcers are, how your horse’s stomach functions and a few little things you can do that will dramatically reduce the risk of your horse’s stomach developing this painful condition.

04.01.2022 Hendra case south of Murwillumbah EVA has received confirmed reports of a positive case of Hendra virus, diagnosed by a highly experienced private veterinarian, on a private property south of Murwillumbah in North Eastern NSW. The horse was a 17 y.o. retired thoroughbred gelding, which presented as ataxic and cyanosed, but importantly was NOT febrile. This presentation reminds us how vague and variable the signs and symptoms of Hendra virus can be, so please be sure to use appropriate levels of PPE as required
