22.01.2022 Go nuts! Dr Karen’s top #5 nuts for PCOS wellness. There are some women who are petrified of including nuts in their diet for fear of the nut fat contributing t...o weight gain. This belief is ingrained in the outdated concept that all calories are created equal and that fat is inherently bad. Nothing could be further from the truth. Nuts contain an abundance of mono-unsaturated fats essential for cell health. They are low in sugar, an essential for PCOS wellness Nut fibre binds with bad fats to stop their absorption, reducing calories from fat. Nuts provide satisfaction after a meal and can help prevent overeating. Research shows that nut eaters maintain a healthier body weight over a lifetime. Walnuts, in particular, reduce the risk of dementia by nearly 30 percent. Brazil nut eaters have more cancer resilience due in part to the abundance of selenium in these punchy little guys. My top #5 nut picks in order of PCOS goodness: 1. Walnuts 2. Almonds 3. Cashews 4. Hazelnuts (Filberts) 5. Brazil nuts

22.01.2022 The positive side of PCOS Even though it may take longer to fall pregnant due to a reduced number of fertile months, women with PCOS have more eggs in their ovaries and can maintain their fertility later in life than most. This is a genetic trade off that has its origins in tribal survival which is why understanding the fundamental genetic origins of PCOS can make all the difference.

20.01.2022 Want to lose 10 kg or 22 pounds without trying? I’ll often give my workshop participants this exercise to do at the lunch break. This is an audit on conscious eating. Take note of the number of chews that you manage on the protein portion of your meal. If dining with others, ask them to audit your chews for you. ... The average person chews around 8 times before swallowing. How did you do? Now read on. A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that simply by increasing the number of chews to forty per mouthful the following exciting things happened: An increase in appetite suppressing hormone cholecystokinin A decrease in the hunger-stimulating hormone ghrelin Nearly 12 percent less calories consumed over the meal. This equates to an impressive weight loss of over 10 kg or 22 pounds over a year. Maybe it’s time to stop inhaling your food and return to earlier times where meals were a cultural pleasure not a time inconvenience. And then you don’t even have to leave the dining table to lose weight!

19.01.2022 Treating sepsis with Vitamin C Fresh off the press today in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association, a study on the success of intravenous Vitamin C in a major intensive care unit in the US. The trial, run by Critical Care Medical Specialist Dr. Paul Marik involved early use of intravenous Vitamin C and B Vitamins and hydrocortisone to treat Septicaemia, a deadly blood infection.... Of the 47 patients treated with conventional medical approach 19 patients died. The group treated by intravenous Vitamin C had only 4 deaths, all of these from complications related to the Septicaemia. Dr. Marik has now instigated the protocol as an essential part of the Unit’s care of all patients with sepsis. It’s time to acknowledge that integrative medicine is the way of the future. 15.01.2022 Choosing the right form of Co-enzyme Q 10 I love reading about studies that confirms the power of natural choices. But for those without a science background, it can be confusing to sift through the new research and make sense of it. There’s a pattern emerging with nutrient support showing that some supplements need to dance together in order to make a difference to health. ... Studies of the nutrient on its own may show no effect at all, but together, these duos make an impressive impact on health risks, energy levels and supporting important biochemical pathways. We also have to consider the biological activity of the supplement , once it’s taken up by the body. One example of these dance partners is a combination of CO-enzyme Q10 with Vitamin E. Together, these have been shown to reduce heart risk in women by 60 percent. As a medical doctor I’m excited by news like this, but I issue a word of warning: unless you delve into your DNA and know whether this combination is right for your unique genetic landscape, you may be wasting good health dollars or at worst, doing more harm than good. Co-enzyme Q10 also doubles as a common performance-support nutrient. But some women are genetically slower to convert the supplement form of Co-Q 10 into its active and usable form. Solution? If you are considering supplementing with Co-enzyme Q10 source the active form of this enzyme, Ubiquinol, rather than the more common and cheaper Ubiquinone. It will help you to access cellular energy faster and protect your heart health. A double bonus!

15.01.2022 DIAGNOSING POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME (PCOS)..how hard can it be?? Doctors have been working on the diagnostic checklist for decades and for most MDs the answ...er is more complex than it should be. There are three things to take into account. If you answer yes to any question in two of the three categories below, then we must suspect PCOS: 1. What are your periods doing? - Are your periods longer than 35 days? 2. What are your ovaries doing? - Have you had an ultrasound that shows multiple tiny cysts on your ovaries? - Have you had a blood test showing a high AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone)? 3. Do you have signs of high male hormones in your body? - Do you have stubborn skin breakouts? - Do you have unwanted hair on your body? - Have you had a blood test showing high levels of male hormones? If you have checked a YES to any of the questions in two of these categories, book a check-up with your MD for confirmation and stay connected with the PCOS Doctor.

14.01.2022 GENES for HEALTH... Hey, just thought this may be useful for any of your friends or family that would like to be proactive about their health and overcome some of these issues. The feeling of being exhausted or stressed for no reason...... Being plagued with frequent colds or flus... The battle to maintain a healthy weight... Having to struggle to find the energy for your daily to-do list... Wanting to explore a tool for healthier ageing... We all have different genetic landscapes. A diet that suits one woman, often will not suit another. Supplements that may be a gift to some may be a poison to others. By looking at clusters of genes that express important pathways of wellness in your cells, we can plan lifestyle choices, so you can enjoy a longer health span, more energy and zest for life, and avoid the pharmaceutical domino. These genes clusters support pathways that control inflammation, cell detox, energy production, heart health and Vitamin D receptors that allow this essential nutrient to gain entry to cells. For a LIMITED time, Dr Karen is offering to create for you a personalized and detailed report on your unique genetic vulnerability and resilience. This will enable you to focus on areas that need support, tailor your supplements to meet your needs and dodge those genetic bullets that could lead to chronic disease. 13.01.2022 Gluten the culprit again, linked to Type 1 diabetes in children A robust study linking gluten with the autoimmune Type 1 diabetes gives us pause to rethink the amount of processed grains and cereals we feed to our children. This Norwegian study showed a child’s risk of developing Type 1 diabetes before teenage years increased a massive 46% for every 10 grams of gluten eaten around the age of 12 to 18 months.... This is not the first time that gluten has been implicated in this type of autoimmune disease. The research team believe the disease process starts in the gut with altered microbiome (good bacteria) leading to microscopic inflammation of the gut (aka leaky gut). This is no surprise for the naturopathic community but a big wake-up call, particularly for families with a history of Type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune diseases. The solution? Be vigilant about good gut health at all ages. Minimise gluten in children's diets and eliminate it during viral infections , as all viruses will have an inflammatory effect on the gut. Support the gut microbiome with probiotics if antibiotics are needed. Keep gluten as an occasional celebratory food if family history has a flavour of autoimmune disease.

11.01.2022 Reduce the risk of heart disease with this simple strategy Did you know that inflammation drives all chronic disease? Carrying increased body weight raises inf...lammatory markers that can be measured in blood tests. High readings of the inflammation protein C-reactive Protein, or CRP, indicates a higher risk of heart attack or stroke than high cholesterol. If CRP is elevated in an otherwise healthy person then act now to reduce total body inflammation and improve your chances of dodging that heart-risk. Solution? - Know what your CRP lab reading is and aim to keep your result below 1 - Aim for a healthy body weight by eating more fresh, unprocessed foods. - Omega 3 oils, found in oily fish and sea algae, have been shown to be powerful natural anti-inflammatory.

09.01.2022 IMPORTANT ALERT FOR WOMEN WITH PCOS Is your drinking water ramping up PCOS symptoms? My PCOS tribe is well aware of this major saboteur of wellness. I’ve been a...dvising my women with PCOS to avoid chlorinated water primarily because of hormone disrupting chemicals created by the chlorine interacting with plastic piping. Now the focus is on the fluoride added to our water supply for dental health reasons. An extensive study on the effects of normal levels of fluoride on thyroid health, androgens (male hormone levels) and insulin resistance concluded that fluoride ramps up PCOS symptoms and medical risks even at concentrations regarded as ‘safe’. Bottom line: fluoride is seriously bad news for women with PCOS. SOLUTIONS? o Make sure all drinking water is chemical free - use a water filter that extracts fluoride and chlorine from the source o Avoid toothpastes containing fluoride - rely on good dental hygiene and check-ups instead. Taking back control of PCOS means your treatment plans must consider all of these saboteurs of wellness. Ref: Szczukop, et al, Fluorine may intensify the mechanisms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) development via increased insulin resistance and disturbed thyroid- stimulating hormone (TSH) synthesis even at reference levels Med Hypothesis Journal January 2019

08.01.2022 Your genes are not your destiny. Personalised healthcare requires information that is specific to the individual and not just 'one size fits all'. There was considerable publicity surrounding Angelina Jolie's decision to have radical breast surgery in light of her mother's struggle with breast cancer and her positive test for the BRCA 1 and 2 genes. This decision to act and have surgery was based on access to medically significant genetic information, family history and indiv...Continue reading

08.01.2022 Exciting NEW DISCOVERIES PROVEN to turn down PCOS genes I’ve previously shared with you the dance of nutrients like Vitamin D, zinc and magnesium and how powerf...ul combinations are in turning down the volume on PCOS symptoms. I’m excited to share research from medical researchers in Italy. They combined Folic acid, selenium, chromium, and a particular form of inositol to get these incredible results: - Periods back to normal within 6 months in OVER 65 PERCENT of women in the study. - Blood sugars reduced - Male hormone levels reduced - A modest weight loss with no dieting. It’s important to work out how this relates to your unique cluster of PCOS symptoms and to support your body with just the right amount of nutrient support. More of a good thing is NOT necessarily better! There are also some women in my PCOS tribe who have to take great care if supplementing with inositol because of a common gene variation. It’s also important to choose the correct form of the vitamin or supplement I’ll be posting more about this so stay in touch with my tribe.

06.01.2022 I have been participating in this group's survey for 3 years. 06.01.2022 Dr Karen’s Strategic Sleep Foods It may surprise some to know that the medical diagnosis of a Sleep Disorder is Disturbed sleep for 3 + nights a week for more than 3 months. Sleep disturbance dominos into a physical stress on your body, which then disturbs sleep further a horrible vicious cycle.... Understanding how the body converts our protein foods into our mood and sleep hormones gives us clues to support healthy sleep patterns. These foods contain the protein building blocks needed to build good levels of our sleep hormone Melatonin, along with the co-factor foods that convert food protein into melatonin. Choose a variety of these types of foods every day and chew them well before swallowing. If you don’t get this foundation step right, chances are you will end up spending time dozing in a doctor’s waiting room.

05.01.2022 Fertility saboteur #2 Is stress sabotaging your pregnancy plans? We know that women with PCOS carry more biochemical stress in their bodies. This adds to the b...aseline stress inherent in living in our modern world. One of the hidden causes of unexplained infertility can be a subtle elevation of a pituitary hormone called prolactin and I’ve seen this play out in my obstetric practice. This guy is more commonly elevated during breast feeding and gives nursing mother’s their natural contraception. But prolactin levels also rise during stress, and for some women this works against their plans to fall pregnant. Working with women to reduce stress and using safe medication where needed to lower this hormone can support women to reach their pregnancy goals. Serum prolactin levels can be checked in a simple fasting blood test.
