15.01.2022 Murray Valley encephalitis is a rare disease that has the capacity to cause acute and severe illness in humans and can be fatal. It is spread from infected ani...mals to humans by mosquito bites and there is no vaccine or cure for this virus. There is currently a higher risk of this virus in SA, particularly in regions along the River Murray, after a sentinel chicken tested positive to the virus. The last diagnosed human case in SA was in 2011. The time between becoming infected and developing symptoms can be as short as 5 days or as long as 28 days. Many people infected with Murray Valley encephalitis virus have no symptoms or mild symptoms. Mild illness may include symptoms such as: fever headache nausea vomiting. See the image for the full list of possible symptoms. In those that have symptoms, it can be very serious and is fatal in about 20 per cent of cases. For those who survive, about 40 per cent of cases will suffer permanent neurological damage. Anyone experiencing symptoms of Murray Valley encephalitis virus needs to seek urgent medical assistance. For info on preventing mosquito bites, visit www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/fightthebite
