10.01.2022 Reminder: The Total Fire Ban remains in place until 2am Tuesday 12 January 2021

09.01.2022 On National Police Remembrance Day we remember those whose lives were cut tragically short while serving their community. Shockwaves reverberated through the A...ustralian policing community in April, when Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Senior Constable Kevin King, Constable Glen Humphris and Constable Josh Prestney, were killed on duty at a vehicle stop on Melbourne’s Eastern Freeway on 22 April. It was the biggest loss of life in a single event for Victoria Police. These officers were children, siblings, partners and friends. That didn’t stop when they put on the uniform, and the sadness of their loss remains. To those families who have lost loved ones, we grieve with you. While we can never take away the weight of your loss, across Australia, the entire policing family, is here to support you. To those who continue to serve, we thank you. #NeverForgotten

09.01.2022 TFS Media Release Tasmanians encouraged to make 5-minute bushfire plan Date: 12 Jan 2021 ... Tasmanians have been thanked for their support following the total fire ban that was in place in the state's southern region until 2am today. Acting Regional Chief Ian Bounds said that yesterday's severe and very high fire danger conditions were experienced for the first time this bushfire season. "We are entering the seasonally high-risk bushfire period from now through to March with vegetation drying out significantly over the last few weeks," Mr Bounds said. "Now is not the time to be complacent. The risk of bushfires will remain into the weeks and potentially months ahead until we see significant rainfall. Tasmanians need to remain vigilant, prepare their properties and ensure they have a bushfire survival plan." TFS recommends all Tasmanians develop a 5-minute bushfire plan by visiting the TFS website. More information on how to develop your 5-minute bushfire plan can be found at www.fire.tas.gov.au .

08.01.2022 A man evacuated his burning shack unharmed early this morning after he was woken by the sound of a smoke alarm activating. TFS volunteer crews from Great Lake, ...Deloraine, Bothwell and Brady’s Lake brigades were called to the fire on Jillett Road at Brandum just before 2am to find the shack fully engulfed. The fire started in the loungeroom when a wall behind the wood heater caught fire, destroying the 2-bedroom shack and a nearby ute. The owned changed the battery in his smoke alarm this week after remembering that daylight savings is the time of year recommended by fire services to change your smoke alarm batteries. The loungeroom was well alight when the occupant woke up. Given how quickly fire can move through a house, just seconds later could have meant the difference between life and death, or serious injury, said Regional Fire Investigator, Station Officer Adam Doran said. This incident is an example of the importance of having working smoke alarms installed in any room where you sleep. You can’t smell smoke when you are asleep, so you are relying on your other senses, such as your hearing, to alert you to a fire. Often smoke alarms in shacks can be forgotten and it’s important to ensure they are properly maintained. If you’re at your shack during these school holidays, pack some batteries before you go and replace them as soon as you get there. Even better, install smoke alarms with a 10-year lithium battery and make sure they are cleaned and tested regularly, Mr Doran said.

01.01.2022 TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST Severe Weather Warning for DAMAGING WINDS For people in King Island, Furneaux Islands, Western, North East, East Coast, North West Coast, Central Plateau and parts of Upper Derwent Valley, South East, Central North and Midlands Forecast Districts. Issued at 9:40 am Wednesday, 7 October 2020.... DAMAGING EAST TO NORTHEASTERLY WINDS ACROSS MUCH OF TASMANIA DURING THURSDAY Weather Situation: A deep low pressure centre develops near King Island on Thursday and directs and strong, moisture-rich northeasterly airstream over Tasmanian throughout the day. The low moves over the state and away to the southeast during Friday. DAMAGING EAST TO NORTHEASTERLY WINDS, averaging 50 to 60 km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h, are possible across much of Tasmania during Thursday. The strongest winds are expected during the morning and afternoon, with winds expected to ease by Thursday evening. Soils are very wet across much of Tasmania, and strong east to northeasterly winds are not common, so trees and infrastructure may be more susceptible than usual. NOTE: A separate Severe Weather Warning for Heavy Rainfall has also been issued. Locations which may be affected include Devonport, Burnie, St Helens, Swansea, Strahan and Queenstown. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Supervise children closely. * Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings. * Manage pets and livestock. * Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment. * Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004. * Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving. * Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice. * For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500. The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 pm AEDT Wednesday. Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210.
