20.01.2022 Last night's backburn around Cathedrals on Fraser, as seen from Signal Hill

19.01.2022 Thanks to a successful backburn conducted by QPWS last night, our campground is now protected from fire in all directions. While the fire continues to burn to o...ur south, so far all of the island's infrastructure and major attractions remain unaffected. Our thoughts are now with Kingfisher Bay Resort and everyone at Happy Valley. See more

12.01.2022 Lucky thing the dingo pups were big big enough to leave their dens a few weeks ago.

07.01.2022 Update 30/11/20

06.01.2022 **This bushfire warning is no longer current please refer to the QFES Facebook page for updated information** PREPARE TO LEAVE: Kingfisher Bay Resort and Villa...ge (part of the K’gari, Fraser Island bushfire) as at 1.20pm Tue 1 Dec Bushfire warning level: WATCH AND ACT Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) advises there is a bushfire near the Kingfisher Bay Resort and Village on K’gari (Fraser Island) and conditions could get worse. There is a separate warning for residents on K'gari (Fraser Island). Residents should refer to this warning for further information. Any person at the Kingfisher Bay Resort and Village should follow the directions of Queensland Fire and Emergency Service or Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service officers. You need to be ready to follow your bushfire survival plan. If you do not have a plan, or intend to leave, you should be ready to leave the area because the situation could get worse quickly. Currently as at 1.20pm Tuesday 1 December, a bushfire is travelling from Boon Boon Creek south towards the Kingfisher Bay Resort and Village. Extensive waterbombing is continuing to slow the spread of the fire. Fire crews are working to contain the fire but firefighters may not be able to protect every property. You should not expect a firefighter at your door. People in the area will be affected by smoke, which will reduce visibility and air quality. Call Triple Zero (000) immediately if you believe your property is under threat. WHAT YOU SHOULD DO: Listen to your local radio station or visit the Rural Fire Service (RFS) website for regular updates. If you have a bushfire survival plan, finalise it now so you are ready to follow it. If you do not have a bushfire survival plan, or if your plan is to leave, identify where you will go if you leave the area. Advise family and friends of your plan. Close windows and doors to minimise smoke exposure. If you suffer from a respiratory condition, keep your medication close by. Drive with caution in low visibility conditions. Contact your neighbours to see if they need help preparing for the bushfire. Pack important documents and essential items (e.g., passports, birth certificates, prescription medication, food and water, and protective clothing) in case you need to leave the area. Put on protective clothing (e.g., a long-sleeved cotton shirt, boots with thick soles). Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Bring pets inside; restrain them with a leash, a cage, or inside a secure room; and provide them with plenty of water. Take action to protect your livestock. Move flammable materials such as doormats, wheelie bins, and outdoor furniture away from your house. Fill containers such as your bath, sinks, and buckets with water so you have access to drinking water and firefighting water. Close windows and doors, sealing the gaps under doors and screens with wet towels to keep smoke out of the house. KEEP UP TO DATE BY: Following QFES on Facebook (@QldFireandEmergencyServices) and Twitter (@QldFES) Staying tuned to your local radio station. Find your local ABC radio station at https://radio.abc.net.au/help/offline and your local commercial radio station at http://www.commercialradio.com.au/find-a-station/queensland; Visiting the Rural Fire Service (RFS) website at www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au/map FURTHER INFORMATION: For bushfire preparation tips, visit the RFS website: www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au/BushFire_Safety For information about road closures, call 13 19 40 or visit www.qldtraffic.qld.gov.au The next update will be provided by 3.20pm or if the situation changes.

06.01.2022 Water bombing net Cathedral Fraser Island

03.01.2022 Extensive water bombing continues to be used on the K’gari (Fraser Island) fire with more than 1 million litres of water and gel dropped since Saturday (28/11).... Aerial operations have been effective to date in slowing the spread of the fire, but conditions remain challenging and can change rapidly. A massive effort from our aerial teams, being supported by ground crews.

01.01.2022 This is what the crews are dealing with, people ask why aren’t the water bombers stopping it, I reply with have you ever put water on sand? It disappears before it can be of any help, and other areas its hitting the canopy and can’t reach the undergrowth so the fire still roars along underneath. The topography of the island is a very unique one, with hills, dunes, valleys and plains, so it makes it very difficult to know how to approach it. All we can do is hope and pray for rain

01.01.2022 There are currently more than 30 crews on K’gari (Fraser Island), made up of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES), Queensland Parks and Wildlife Servic...e (QPWS) and the Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation personnel. The makeup of the sand island makes our work difficult and we share the communities concerns, but we’ll continue to work around the clock to minimise the impact on K’gari (Fraser Island).
