24.01.2022 Working dog core panel. This panel includes four tests for disorders that are known to occur in either working Collies, working Kelpies, or both. These tests are CEA (collie eye anomaly), TNS (trapped neutrophil syndrome), CA: VMP1 (cerebellar abiotrophy with onset at 5-8 months of age) and CA: LINGO3 (cerebellar abiotrophy with onset at 8-12 weeks of age). COVID-19: We are still open and testing during the COVID-19 outbreak. We might be little slower than usual at times. The...re is a one time sample processing fee of $40 per dog and the Working Dog Core panel test is $54. 24.01.2022 Dr. Kao sent me some good news this arvo: The backlog is getting under control at the lab, so we’ve increased the number of horses and dogs orders we will accept by 10%. :) Happy Friday! The website will reopen for orders first thing Monday!

21.01.2022 Dr Kao has ask me to let you all know that we have capped the number of new orders we will accept in a week. She says we should have let you know earlier because we’ve already hit this week’s cap (yikes - literally half way through the week). The website should reopen automatically on Monday. For a number of weeks we’ve been getting more orders than we can possibly finish in a week. The inevitable result has been that our backlog has been getting longer and longer, so that i...nstead of a 2-3 day turnaround we are now averaging 9 days. Can you imagine how bad it would be by the end of breeding season if we just let it go on like this? I just can’t do that to our lovely clients or our staff. I am so sorry to anyone who goes to order and misses out! Remember to try again on Monday if you can! Of course we will also be working on lots of ways to increase the number of samples we do in a week. As soon as we can, we will increase the cap. Thanks and apologies to everyone again. #dogdna #caninegenetics #caninetesting https://breeding.dog/index.php

21.01.2022 Brown dogs can be found in many different breeds and cross-breeds. Brown dogs are often a beautiful chocolate colour, and have brown instead of black noses. The brown coat colour in dogs is recessive. This means that some dogs that aren't brown still have the potential to produce brown puppies. It also means that when two brown dogs are bred together, they won't produce any black puppies. Our brown panel tests for the three known forms of the brown gene. Unfortunately for Fre...nch Bulldogs this panel can't detect your dark brown yet. COVID-19: We are still open and testing during the COVID-19 outbreak. We might be little slower than usual at times. There is a one time sample processing fee of $40 per dog and the Brown coat panel test is $25. 20.01.2022 It’s a big day for Jayne, our canine receptionist. She’s 10 today! Happy birthday Jayne, good dog! Some more good news! We increased the limit on the number of samples we will accept by 10% again this week. We will aim to keep adding 10% to our capacity every week, so it won’t be long until no-one misses out. https://breeding.dog/index.php... #dogdna #caninetesting #dogsofaustralia

20.01.2022 Study of ancient dog DNA traces canine diversity to the Ice Age A global study of ancient dog DNA, led by scientists at the Francis Crick Institute, University of Oxford, University of Vienna and archaeologists from more than 10 countries, presents evidence that there were different types of dogs more than 11,000 years ago in the period immediately following the Ice Age. In their study, published in Science today (29th October), the research team sequenced ancient DNA from 27...Continue reading

17.01.2022 Canine degenerative myelopathy (DM) is a disorder that occurs relatively late in a dog's life, usually around age 8. The first signs are lameness or toe dragging in the hind legs. The disorder will persist and get worse, leading to complete paralysis of the back legs and then progression further up the body. DM is common in Corgis and German Shepherds and is also found more rarely in a wide range of other breeds. Jayne, the lab mascot, who looks a Boxer x Amstaff or similar i...s a DM carrier. Dogs that have two copies of the DM gene are at high risk of developing DM. DM is an autosomal recessive disorder. Autosomal disorders are equally likely to affect male or female dogs, while "recessive" means that a dog needs to inherit the DM mutation from both its parents to be affected. COVID-19: We are still open and testing during the COVID-19 outbreak. We might be little slower than usual at times. There is a one time sample processing fee of $40 per dog and the Canine degenerative myelopathy (DM) test is $14. 15.01.2022 How long can I keep my dog’s sample before sending it to you? It is important to send the cotton tip back to us as soon as possible after collection. We will get the best results if we receive your dog’s sample within 48 hours. Dry the cotton tip well before sealing it in the envelope, and then send it in the post the same day. This ensures the sample will get to us in the best possible condition. Check out our How To page on our website https://breeding.dog/index.php?about=process

14.01.2022 There are some dog breeds that shed more hair than others. Dog breeds such as the Siberian Husky and German Shepherd are renowned for their shedding prowess. This is because these breeds, along with many others, have an undercoat. This is a layer of soft fluffy hair that lies underneath the outer coat (or guard coat). The denser this undercoat, the more hair the dog will shed. For those with allergies, or who would rather not commit to regular grooming, high-shedding breeds may not be suitable companions. 14.01.2022 PRA-PRCD causes late-onset blindness in dogs. Dogs with PRA-PRCD go night-blind first as the rod cells in their retina are lost. They go completely blind when the cone cells in the retina also die. Breeds known to be affected by PRA-PRCD include Miniature and Toy poodles, Australian cattle dogs (including stumpy-tailed cattle dogs), Silky terriers, Labrador retrievers and Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers. Cavoodles and other poodle crosses that are not first-generation cro...sses are also at risk of PRA-PRCD. PRA-PRCD is an autosomal recessive disorder. Autosomal disorders are equally likely to affect male or female dogs, while "recessive" means that a dog needs to inherit the PRA-PRCD mutation from both its parents to be affected. COVID-19: We are still open and testing during the COVID-19 outbreak. We might be little slower than usual at times. 13.01.2022 Dilution is the colour gene that dilutes brown to silver, and black to a blue or slate colur. Dilution is a recessive trait. This means that dogs can silently carry the dilute gene, without being dilute themselves. Dogs like this - dilute carriers - can potentially produce dilute puppies. The dilute type 2 test is for a rare form of the dilution gene that so far has been found in Chow Chows, Sloughis and Thai Ridgebacks. It can create the dilute coat colours by itself or in c...ombination with the common dilute gene. COVID-19: We are still open and testing during the COVID-19 outbreak. We might be little slower than usual at times. There is a one time sample processing fee of $40 per dog and the Dilute coat test is $9. 08.01.2022 Hair curl is responsible for the beautiful curly coat you see in Poodles, and Bichon Frise and others. Some breeds, such as Maltese Terriers and Border Collies, only occasionally produce puppies with a curly or wavy coat. The gene which controls curly coat is incompletely dominant. This means that dogs with only one copy of the curl gene will have a wavy coat. Curly hair can become matted more easily than wavy or straight hair. This is most important for high-shedding dogs wh...ose loose hair can get caught in the curls. This contributes to the formation of cords in Pulis and other corded dogs. COVID-19: We are still open and testing during the COVID-19 outbreak. We might be little slower than usual at times. There is a one time sample processing fee of $40 per dog and the Curly coat test is $9. Click here to order the Curly coat https://breeding.dog/index.php?test=cur

07.01.2022 How soon can I take samples from a puppy? You can collect DNA from puppies at any age! If the puppies are not weaned they will need to be separated from mum and from each other for at least 30 minutes beforehand. 06.01.2022 Most long-haired dogs carry the common (L1) version of the length gene. Dogs with Akita, Siberian husky or Samoyed breeding can carry L2 instead or as well as L1. The common (L1) and L2 length tests are both included in our shedding panel. Long hair on the couch is much more obvious than short hair! COVID-19: We are still open and testing during the COVID-19 outbreak. We might be little slower than usual at times.... There is a one time sample processing fee of $40 per dog and the Coat length (L2) test is $9. Click here to order the Coat length (L2) https://breeding.dog/index.php?test=ln2

05.01.2022 There are a number of reasons to get a DNA profile for your dog. The most common one is to confirm your dog's parentage. A second reason to get a DNA profile is to have a way to prove your dog's identity in cases of loss or theft of the dog (or their pups). Parentage verification is done using DNA profiles from the parent(s) and the offspring. DNA profiles from some other laboratories can be used for parentage verification, but you will need to provide a full copy of the repo...rt rather than a DNA number. The profile will need to be STR-based rather than SNP-based. Siblings can't be used for parentage verification. DBS will be progressively moving from STR-based parentage profiles to a composite STR and SNP profile. COVID-19: We are still open and testing during the COVID-19 outbreak. We might be little slower than usual at times. There is a one time sample processing fee of $40 per dog and the DNA Profile test is $33. 04.01.2022 A good reminder from Biosecurity Queensland. check out their post below for the answer!

04.01.2022 Cerebellar abiotrophy (CA) has been reported in working Kelpies. Dogs affected by CA can show head or neck tremors, problems with their balance, exaggerated or erratic leg movement and problems eating or drinking from a bowl. This test (CA: VMP1) is associated with a form of CA that first appears in young dogs rather than pups. A positive result for this test (A A) is a strong guide that your dog has or will develop CA. In the original study, 8 of 13 dogs with later-onset CA ...had an A A result for this marker, while none of the healthy dogs showed the same A A result. Other possible results for this test are A C or C C. Dogs with an A C result do not have a high risk of CA but can potentially produce A A pups. This form of CA has been found in border collies as well as Kelpies. COVID-19: We are still open and testing during the COVID-19 outbreak. We might be little slower than usual at times. There is a one time sample processing fee of $40 per dog and the Cerebellar abiotrophy (CA: VMP1) test is $14. 03.01.2022 Collecting DNA from your dog is easier than you may think! We have made this process as simple as possible for both you and your dog. All you will need is an ordinary cotton tip to collect some cheek cells, and a paper envelope for sending it back to us. Some dogs have more mouth than others, but even smaller cheeks will give us enough cells if you swab using the recommended method. Read more on our blog https://breeding.dog/pretty/?p=35

01.01.2022 Furnishings are a sort of coat that gives dogs distinctive longer facial hair resembling moustaches. In some breeds and cross breeds, such as Portugese water dogs and "Doodles" the furnishings coat type not always present. In these cases puppies born without furnishings are said to have an "improper coat". Breeders can use this test to find out if their dogs are carriers of improper coat. Furnishings are a dominant trait, meaning dogs can be silent carriers for improper coat.... The only way to know this is to do a DNA test. COVID-19: We are still open and testing during the COVID-19 outbreak. We might be little slower than usual at times. There is a one time sample processing fee of $40 per dog and the Improper coat test is $9.
