21.01.2022 What makes a dog a dog? That sounds like a simple question with an equally simple answer. But you would be surprised at the number of behaviour issues that arise because owners dont understand what makes a dog a dog. We define a dog as an animal first, then a dog (canine), then we consider his breed and the individual dog. Where it starts to go wrong, for the dog, is when people treat their dog like a human.... A dog is not a human and dog and human psychology are completely different. So how is it that some people and some dogs enjoy a happy relationship even when the dog is being treated like a human? Well, thats because not all dogs are the same and dogs are experts at compromise and adaption. Some dogs are better than others at adapting to being treated like a human and will make compromises to have a happy relationship. Unfortunately the majority of dogs do not respond well to being treated like a human. There is saying that goes treat a dog like a human and he will treat you like a dog. So take a step back and look at your relationship with your dog. Does he have behaviour issues because he is being treated like a human and is not comfortable with adapting and compromise. 12.01.2022 When I am out walking my dog I see this common problem all to often. In recent times it has become popular to fit a harness to our dogs when we take them for walks. Now thats great if your dog walks properly on the lead and doesnt pull. But if your dog pulls then you have just harnessed him up to the strongest part of his body designed for pulling. If you attach your lead to the connection point between your dogs shoulder blades, as most people do, he is now harnessed to p...ull a sledge, just like a Huskie. Only hes not pulling a sledge hes pulling you. Put your arm back in its socket, I have a simple solution. If your dogs harness has a connection point on the centre of the dogs chest under the neck attach your lead to this point. Because the connection point is now low down at the front of the dogs body when he pulls on the lead his effort pulls him sideways and temperarally off balance. Two things happen, he cant put his full effort into pulling and he doesnt like being put off balance. The outcome we get is that he will reduce his pulling or stop pulling altogether. Next time you walk your dog with a harness try connecting him up at the chest and see the difference. Cheers See more
