25.01.2022 Reactive dogs have underlying issues - these need to be addressed scientifically without punishment

25.01.2022 It's a common criticism of training with food, but the fact is that when this is a problem, it's an error with the application, not with the method itself. #AloneTogether #DogBehavior #CSAT #CDBC #ADT #iaabc #iaabcPets #OscarWinner #OscarWinningBehavior #BehaviorThatWinsRewards

25.01.2022 Always have a good reason for anything we ask our dogs to do. I haven't asked Grace RR 11 to sit for years

25.01.2022 So true. We owe it to our dogs to listen and be present

23.01.2022 Great article about personal space and defensive response

23.01.2022 Adopting a dog on one level is like dating. You are all in or you are not. No shame rehoming a dog after extensive efforts if you are not a good match. When adopting I recommend taking time to see if a connection is there. It needs to be two way and dogs are instinctive - a lot more than we are.

22.01.2022 The higher the stress levels the less a dog can learn

22.01.2022 So here is a different way to interpret our dogs' reactions. They are emotional vampires. They react to our emotions, feed off them then react accordingly. So if you are dealing with public behaviours such as reactivity (and you aren't SAS material) you need to understand that your behaviour needs to change just as much as your dog's. If your force free trainer or dog behaviourist are not focussing on you as much as they are on your dog there may be a problem...

22.01.2022 I hope pets stay safe tonight- so many fireworks events! I recommend Calm by Natural Animal Solutions if your dog needs some help. Otherwise: Act normally around your dog. Pretend as though the fireworks aren't happening. Play white sound or music. Close the curtains.... Distract your dog with a game or a puzzle treat. Put a Thundershirt on your dog. Make an anti-anxiety wrap out of an elastic bandage. Keep the dog on a leash if you go outside. See more

18.01.2022 Please get urgent help if your dogs is aggressive. The fewer opportunities you dog has to practice unwanted behaviours the better

17.01.2022 Please say something when you see pups being jogged when they are under 12 months or 24 months for larger breeds. People just don't realise the damage they can do

16.01.2022 Fascinating and not at all unexpected in my opinion

15.01.2022 There seems to be much confusion surrounding the word calm when referring to animal behavior. Calm would infer that the animal is relaxed emotionally and phys...ically. In most cases when punitive methods are employed I am not seeing calm/relaxed, I am seeing shut down and defeated dogs. Lack of reactions or suppressed behaviour is a ticking time bomb. When it explodes you can only blame yourself. #yvrdogs #dogsofig #whistler #westvandogs #northvandogs #bravodog #vancouver #yvr #vancitydogs #whistlerdogs #instadogs #puppytraining #westvancouver #northvancouver #dogtraining #dogbehavior #dogbehaviour #behaviormodification #aba #science #dogs #puppies #dailydog #puppy #dogsofinsta See more

15.01.2022 Separation anxiety is tricky to address when you work so are away for extended periods. Anti anxiety medication can help in conjunction with other strategies. In my experience many anxious social dogs cope well with a doggy friend. When I board my dogs our anxious dog Tex needs anti anxiety meds or all 3 don't cope. If Tex is ok everyone is ok.

14.01.2022 Saturday's Pet Peeve: Canine dominance, shock collars, uncredentialed "trainers" and other antiquated constructs that need to end. This week I had a behavior co...nsultation for a 2 year old Dalmatian mix, "Julio", who had a history of lunging and barking aggressively at unfamiliar people, biting one person a few months earlier. With permission, and with changed breed and name, I wanted to share something the owners/guardians noted in their history form. At the age of 1 year, Julio was enrolled in a group training class. He lunged and barked at the instructor, which surprised his owner as this was a new behavior. She petted and reassured Julio, but was stopped by the instructor, who said that petting/comforting would only make him worse through reinforcement of his behavior. Everyone in the class was instructed to put a remote control shock collar on their dogs, regardless of their behavior, and the collars were used throughout the group sessions. For Julio, specifically, the direction was to press the "vibrate" button as soon as he set his eyes on an unfamiliar person, escalating to "shock" if he didn't stop his behavior. The shock would be stopped once he looked calmer or shifted his eyes to the handler (a kind of negative reinforcement). The owner said that, with the shock collar, "Julio became more fearful of everything. The trainer [who had recommended the shock collar] suggested that his fears and anxieties were dominance issues." Julio, by the way, historically trembled and panted at the vet and groomer, and was extremely fearful of thunderstorms, fireworks and new things in his environment. He had broken out of crates as a puppy. So my thoughts and peeves are simple: 1. Fearful, reactive dogs are not confident, "alpha" dogs. They are worried dogs. 2. The entire construct of canine dominance related aggression to humans has been debunked and buried deep in the soil of behavioral mythology. 3. Positive punishment or negative reinforcement of anxiety- or fear-based behavior is not effective because anxiety and fear are not voluntary choices. They are emotions, rooted deeply in the dog's DNA, development and experience. Shock works by causing pain. Pressing a button to hurt a worried dog will only aggravate the worry and fear. 4. Reassuring a worried dog will not reinforce the worry or fear for the same reasons. Reinforcement doesn't apply because the fear is not a choice. Even better than reassurance is actively working to change the dog's emotional response to something that scares him -- but comforting won't hurt, either. It is so very important to check the credentials of anyone claiming to be a dog trainer or behavior consultant. Remember, there is no law stopping anyone from hanging up a dog training shingle, whether or not they've "had lots of dogs growing up". It is very likely that a "trainer" who claims the fallacies stated above has no respected credentials at all. Julio is an anxious, insecure dog whose aggression is rooted in self-defense and nothing else. He is also a lucky dog, because his humans are now committed to helping him feel safe in this world. In addition to the behavior consultation, they've started working with a credentialed, progressive, positive-reinforcement based trainer. #vetbehavior #vetbehaviordogs

14.01.2022 Always monitor play sessions - they can deteriorate quickly. All dogs should look look they are having a great time!

11.01.2022 In our house we have the coordinated "we want a pigs ear" stare...

10.01.2022 So when you are going back to the office try to ease in. Beforehand go out and work anywhere for a couple of hours a day. Then in the office for half a day. Consider a supplement like Calm from Natural Animal Solutions to help your fur kid cope with their new routine

09.01.2022 Socialisation is not about bombarding your pup - take it as slow as they need

08.01.2022 Enough said....

07.01.2022 My dogs are great. They have basic training only as I personally like them to have choices. Ive met dogs that look to their owners for instructions the whole walk - so sad

07.01.2022 PANDEMIC 101 PUPPY SOCIALISATION - So one of the less foreseen consequences of this pandemic may be a generation or two of puppies who are not socialised adequately during this self isolation/ social isolation phase. So what do you do? If you have friends with suitable doggy play mates invest in a harness with a 6-10m lead so the dogs can play safely while you and your friend are at a safe distance. Once at home soak the harness and lead in soapy water. Enlist your friends an...d neighbours to visit your verge and toss yummy treats to your puppy while you stay in your front yard - strangers = good stuff. This is particularly important to do with children if you don't have any at home. Practice vet examinations - checking teeth, ears, feet - if you have a mask wear it - so weird looking people touching them if they need vet treatment is ok. Take them for car rides with the window slightly down so they still experience the outside world. Build their confidence - and their future resilience by teaching them tricks. any other ideas? 07.01.2022 So I’m in New York. Dogs go to restaurants, on public transport. Here is my assessment: 50% are clearly anxious but coping 25% are absolutely terrified (but still walked) 25% are either happy out and about or shut down (not something I can assess in a few seconds) So I love that they are included in everyday life but really sad that they are not coping . NY is loud and crowded with few areas where a dog can be a dog, sniff the grass etc. most are just being pulled along at the end of a lead and encouraged to poop/ pee. Most are actively discouraged from interacting with people and other dogs. I can hear their frustration. If I could I’d set up a free advice booth and dispense anti anti anxiety meds

07.01.2022 No excuse - if you understand dog behaviour you don't need to resort to such barbaric "tools"!

06.01.2022 Just in case you didn’t know...

05.01.2022 I found this very funny, however the message is clear - retractable leads are dangerous for dogs and people!

04.01.2022 So the downside of having lovely social dogs who have an Aunty Network (who are late 60s to mid 70s) who love throwing the ball for them... and Spike and Tex adore them and race over to have their balls thrown... I need bring in social distancing... So from Monday I will have one set of balls for me to throw and another set for the Aunties. They will be kept separate, put in a bucket with soapy water between sessions (then rinsed), placed in a plastic bag and then only one Aunty can only throw the ball for one dog on any morning. No cross-contamination - reducing risk for everyone. How are you planning to keep your pups happy while maintaining the people and the things that they love?

03.01.2022 It really disappoints me how many uneducated dog trainers there are in Perth. Substituting a lack of qualifications with shock and prong collars - suppressing behavior rather than changing the dog's emotional response. I feel sick for these dogs - punished for not having had the right training or guidance from the people who are meant to teach and guide them. I sometimes wonder how they treat their kids.... And other vulnerable groups...

03.01.2022 So true - people are the issue, not the dogs

03.01.2022 Hmm and there are potentially links between diet and behavioral problems. Personally the more natural and species specific a diet is the less likely that it will contribute to behavioural problems

02.01.2022 It is snake season. Please familiarise yourself with the symptoms in this article

01.01.2022 A gentle reminder

01.01.2022 Please read We are asking people to please reconsider surrendering pets at this time. Some rescues are receiving a larger than usual number of enquiries abo...ut surrendering pets and there has been a reduced amount of enquiries for adoptions. With the number of animals entering pound facilities remaining steady, priority in rescues need to be given to animals who are at most risk of euthanasia. Landlords and real estate agents please do your part by not asking tenants to rehome pets at this point in time. There is already uncertainty among the community and surrenders only add to the stress of volunteers not to mention families. Together we can all work to support rescue groups and owners during the next few months. If you are a pet owner having any difficulties being able to source or affording food for pets please try here https://www.facebook.com/groups/payitforwardfortheanimalsofwa Note: not all surrenders are due fear of infection, but a variety of reasons, such as job loses and rental instability. If you are looking to adopt, it is a great time to help settle a pet in, so please check out www.petrescue.com.au or www.adoptadog.com.au #coronavirus #workingtogether #keepingpetsinhomes
