25.01.2022 Turning their face away is communication. Lack of eye contact is communication. Frequent lip licking is communication. A lip curl is communication. A growl is c...ommunication. An air snap is communication. A bite is communication --- and the result of SIX previous chances to respond to your dog trying to tell you they are uncomfortable. You haven't backed off because you didn't pick up on the first 3 and with the last 3 you thought your dog was disrespecting you. Respect is mutual. Learn your dog's body language. Start listening with your eyes. A great resource: www.silentconversations.com
25.01.2022 Dogs communicate in many ways. Are you listening to your dog?

23.01.2022 Something to think about. Forcing a dog to face its fears and taking away its control over its own movement is probably not a good idea as the risk of creatin...g a negative learning experience becomes very high. Luring a fearful dog with food could work out fine and can sometimes make a dog to realize that an object is safe, but it can also create feelings of inner conflict and some dogs will suddenly startle. I would never advise anyone to lure a fearful dog into meeting other animals (including humans) as this can become very risky. Once the food has been eaten, the dog may freak out in being too close and suddenly react with a defensive response. Encouraging a dog (with verbal praise or other types of rewards) after it takes initiative in exploring and processing information at its own pace can boost the self-confidence of a dog and can reduce stress and fearfulness. 21.01.2022 My Motto to all my clients "If your dog is unsure then get their nose to the floor!" For super sniffy time!
21.01.2022 Dogs have such an acute sense of smell, they can smell incoming weather changes (like storms), learn about their environment, discover different dogs or species... that walked before them (which is why that pee spot is so important!! pee-mail!), and even smell our emotions. Yet on walks with our dogs, many commonly have often the "hurry up, let's go" mentality. As we don't have the same acute sense of smell as our dogs, it's not easy to understand or relate to why it's important to let dogs slow down and sniff. We simply cant smell the way dogs can! Next time you're on a walk, put the phone away, slow it down and let your dog's nose guide your walk. It'll show you great insights into your dog's behaviour, decrease their stress levels, improve their behaviour as well as their emotional and physical well-being. *WFA offers sniffy walks to certain communities in the YYC area*

15.01.2022 Please understand that forcing dogs to socialise, participate or into situations that they do not want to be in MAKES THINGS WORSE, NOT BETTER Dogs need time to... process and take things in at their own pace. Encourage, support and respond to their needs/emotions - do not push your own agenda. Image credit: That Dog Geek

11.01.2022 To all my clients and followers out there: What a crazy time this is! I know that the growing concern of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) is probably taking up lots of space in your world. I wanted to reach out to you so you know that I am doing my part to keep my clients and our community safe. ... At this time, all lessons have been cancelled until the restrictions have lifted. However, I am proceeding with one on one sessions. I am taking the following extra precautions to keep you safe: One on one session will be held at a quiet park only. I will remain a safe distance from clients and will refrain from touching your dogs leash or handing you treats so please come prepared. From 27.03.20 I will be closing my business as an abundance of caution and out of concern for our community. During this time, I am still available to support you in the following ways: Please feel free to email me with questions or concerns about your dogs training and I will provide instruction within 24 hours I am also happy to set up phone calls at scheduled times for those who wish to speak to me I am working on Virtual lessons that can be scheduled soon, which will take place via Zoom, Skype, Facetime or other video conferencing software. This option can be as effective as having me in person. All that is needed is a strong internet connection and a smartphone or webcam. A tripod might also be a good tool to have but is not necessary. I will post more here once this becomes available. I will be sharing enrichment and training tips to keep your dogs on the path of progress. I look forward to continuing to support you and your dog during this time and look forward to when I can continue with our classes and in person training. If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to reach out. All the best, Maya
07.01.2022 A puppies need for sleep is often underestimated - they need a lot. An over tired puppy can be like an over tired baby or toddler so for their well being AND yours, ensure that your puppy is getting enough sleep.

04.01.2022 Off Leash Dogs- its such a contentious issue. There are some key points to remember when you are out and about with your dog, and one of them is, its not neces...sarily about you and your dog. You may have the sweetest, most playful dog that ever lived, but not everyone does, and its unfair on both your dog and the dog who isn't comfortable being approached by other dogs to allow it to occur without checking in. So if the area is not a designated 'off lead' area, ALL dogs need to be on lead, and if you are in an off lead area and a dog is walking through on lead, recall your dog back to you or to another area away from the on lead dog walking through. Remember, there are lots of reasons why someone might not want to have their dog interact with your dog right then and there, so be considerate and lets keep everyone safe and happy.

03.01.2022 To build on our post earlier in the week.. Dogs lick us for four main reasons. Not one of them is giving us kisses. To politely ask for space - a dog may lick ...when they feel encroached on as a way of asking for space. If we have something tasty or nutritious on us such as food, salt or moisture then our dogs are doing it because it obtain that from our skin or because it tastes good to them. Its obvious when theyre doing it for this reason because there will be something on your skin. Another is grooming and bonding between individuals. This is probably the closest thing they do to kissing buts not the same. They do this with those that they are close with and in doing so it strengthens the bond through familiarity. This licking is often slow, deliberate and relaxed. The most common reason we see dogs lick is simply information seeking. They will often do this to individuals they have just met or when greeting someone familiar. Well often see this happen if the dog has noticed a change in its environment, such as someone moving or making a loud or different noise, this is the dog simply trying to get enough feedback from its environment and those within it to feel comfortable.
02.01.2022 Puppy biting is normal. It comes with the territory. Remember this mantra to help mitigate the biting: interrupt and redirect. The checklist in the poster bel...ow lists different ways to redirect a puppys natural behavior. And most importantly, never punish puppy biting! You could actually make it worse because the puppy could become anxious and defensive. #BehaviorVets #InterruptRedirect #Puppies #PuppyBiting #RelationshipGoals #MeetingNeeds #TrustTheProcess
01.01.2022 After years of studying, years of practical experience and spending a fortune on gaining knowledge and still I keep learning and evolving which I hope will neve...r stop I can only come to one conclusion: understanding and influencing dog behavior can be complex. I know we humans love to make it all seem like a straight forward formula, like a simple recipe that can easily be projected onto an entire species, like the domesticated dog. I know how many humans love the popular before and after videos where you dont get to see the middle Please: do not let yourself be fooled. Dogs are complex mammals. Each dog is a unique individual and there can be many factors that are influencing its behavior. Our dogs do not live in controlled laboratories (nope, not in Skinner or Pavlov boxes either, not saying that their theories are not extremely valuable because they are, but there is so much more to discover), dogs live were we live, in the real world.
